Ella and the Ocean – Lian Tanner Ella and the Ocean is a significant text, highlighting Australia’s current weather conditions, which is being experienced by much of Australia and it’s people. Award-winning author, Lian Tanner combines the best of picture fiction, bringing to life a story about imagination, hope and family. Ella lives on a dry and baron land in the middle of Australia on a farm with her family. One night while she is asleep Ella deeply dreams about the ocean. When Ella awakes, she longs to see and experience the coolness of the ocean. Feeling curious about the ocean, Ella wanders the drought-ridden farm to find her father, mother and brother. When she asks these family members about the ocean, all of them dismiss Ella’s dreams and express their desires for her to forget about it. When Ella falls asleep after these conversations, she dreams once again of the ocean. Feeling saddened by her family’s responses, she seeks her grandmother out, and while speaking with her grandmother, Ella’s grandmother provides her with the answers she’s been longing for.
