BLOG ENTRY

Engaging Migrants in Participatory ResearchBy student from Miami, Rachel Becker A paucity of literature provides an in-depth exploration of themental and physical health of migrant workers. Researchers andclinicians have a variety of unanswered questions that could helpthem better serve this community, ranging from methods of healthpromotion to help-seeking behaviors to resiliency factors. Highquality research will not only provide them with a betterunderstanding of this population, but also assist them in tailoringtheir efforts and interventions. Given the historical trauma, marginalization, anddisenfranchisement of migrant workers, research frameworks mustempower communities to have a strong voice in the focus, process,

and ways to minimize risks inthe home setting.

and dissemination of research. Without this type of paradigm, thebest-intentioned research projects can maintain the status quo, silencing and pathologizing the community. Furthermore, withoutextensive community input the results of research might not havestrong validity and applicability. In this article, we outlinecommunity-based participatory research (CBPR) methodology thatprivileges the needs and input of the community throughout theentire research process. We, undergraduate and graduate studentsat the University of Miami, are currently working with theEverglades Community Association (ECA; a migrant worker camp)and EnFamilia (a community organization that provides a widerange of services to ECA) to examine aspects of educationalattainment and mental health. We will use our experiences in ourcurrent work to illustrate the core elements of CBPR and to provideother practitioners with ideas on how to incorporate theseprinciples into their clinical work and research... New EOH Tool for Pesticide Exposure New resources to help clinicians protect the health and safety ofagricultural workers are now available on the MCN website.MCN's Acute Pesticide Exposure Clinical Guidelines andaccompanying Pesticide Exposure Assessment form are critical foruse in health centers that care for farmworkers, the populationmost overexposed to pesticides. These tools were reviewed byMCN's expert advisory committee on environmental andoccupational health. The clinical guidelines were adapted from guidelines drafted byDennis Penzell, DO, MS, a former medical director at a federallyfunded health center in Florida who treated and managedfarmworker patients poisoned in one of the largest pesticidepoisoning incidents in the US. The pesticide exposure form wasadapted from a resource created by Matthew Keifer, MD, MPH,director of the National Farm Medicine Center and an occupationalmedicine specialist renowned for his research and clinical workwith farmworkers and pesticides. Dr. Keifer's data collection tooland other pesticide resources will be included in EPA's forthcomingRecognition and Management of Pesticide Poisonings, 6th edition.

FIELDS OF CARE

For Migrant Clinicians Networkby Jennie McLaurin

Earth-crusted hands ache unseen

Brother, son and sister youngGather groaning buckets, bent to feed a nation.

Emptying fields, harvest calls, move on, move on.

Oh count the pulse that takes no restStand the stooped and hear each breathSow healing justice, make well the root

In fullness birth a season new, a season new.
