Rosary Day

TCDSB celebrates Rosary Day on October 7th or the first Friday of October each

year. This year, the day was celebrated on October 5th. Students at Madonna

made their own rosaries to prepare for the event. Visit the Rosary Day webpage

School Events

Smudging Ceremony at St. Timothy

On Wednesday, October 10th, Mrs. Montisano’s grade 5

class participated in a smudging celebration facilitated by

Roberta Pike, a parent at St. Timothy Catholic School. The

celebration will take place at St. Timothy’s outdoor

My Clothes My World: Non-Profit SHSM Workshop

Madonna's SHSM Non-Profit has partnered with Fashion Takes Action's "My Clothes My World"

workshop for an exciting and enriching experiential learning opportunity. The My Clothes, My

World workshop is introduces students to important world issues via the topic of fashion! This workshop

provided interactive activities that allowed students to discuss issues related to labour rights,

consumerism, and environmental degradation. It has provided students the opportunity to think more

critically about the apparel industry and inspire them to take meaningful action. Thank you to

Cassandra Ciarallo of Fashion Takes Action for facilitating this workshop for students.

St. Joseph’s College Honours Missing and

Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls

On October 4th St. Joseph’s College School hosted a special

assembly and vigil for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

and Girls of Canada. The assembly consisted of prayers,

speeches, and a presentation of traditional First Nations culture,

storytelling and dancing. Staff and students wore red as a sign of

respect and solidarity to this cause and special guests included

Aaron Bell, an Ojibway storyteller and the White Pine Dancers.

TCDSB Students Welcome Exchange Partners

from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut Students in grades five to eight from 15 different TCDSB

and TDSB schools in South Etobicoke partnered with

students from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut for a Northern hockey

exchange program. TCDSB students brought their twinned exchange partner to school with them on

Postcards for Peace

Students Pen Thank You Postcards to Veterans For Remembrance Day, the TCDSB invited students and staff across

the Board to pen a thank you postcard to Canadian Armed Forces

Members. Students participated in the campaign to honour and

remember our Canadian heroes. All postcards submitted will be

delivered in a bulk parcel directly to members of the Canadian

Armed Forces as

morale mail. Let us

pray for peace in our

Toronto District Catholic Athletic Association Results Congrats to all the winning TCDSB athletes who have completed their 2017/18 seasons; including

tennis, golf, ultimate Frisbee, girls’ field hockey, rugby, and flag football. Click here for results and

2017 TCDSB Cross-Country

This fall more than 16,000 students in our Board participated in Cross-

Country events! A special congratulations to the 2017 TCDSB Cross-

Country Meets top three schools: St. John, Our Lady of Sorrows, and

Blessed Sacrament. A very big thank you to all the staff and volunteers

Samantha Santiago Races Against Andre DeGrasse and Penny Oleksiak

Samantha (pictured centre) was selected by WE movement

among thousands of students to participate in this race due to

her ongoing commitment to social justice related initiatives in

her school community. Samantha was introduced by

Craig Kielburger and interviewed by CTV

News to celebrate her accomplishments

Canadian Olympian Sarah Wells visits Romero

Canadian Olympian Sarah Wells (pictured right) visited Blessed Archbishop

Romero on Friday Sept. 29th ahead of the annual Terry Fox Run. Sarah is

currently touring with WE Day and made a special stop at Romero, courtesy of

the school’s SRO P.C. Peter De Quintal. She spoke to students about her

“believe” initiative, motivating them to be their best.

Chaminade students present at Ontario

School Zone Safety Conference

On October 2nd students from Chaminade

College Leadership spoke at the Ontario School

Zone Safety Conference. This Conference brought

together experts in education, health,

enforcement, engineering and policy

development to share knowledge, inspire

solutions, and collaborate on an action plan to

make school zones an actual and perceived safe

St. Robert’s Students host CBC Book Talk

Once a year, select young readers across

Canada are chosen to participate in an exclusive

and exciting CBC Book Talk for the finalists of the

2017 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award.

Last month, Ms Sidot’s students at St. Robert’s were

one of the lucky classes chosen to discuss their

opinions and reflections about Kit Pearson’s

newest novel, “A Day of Signs and Wonders”, with

CBC journalist Mary Ito. Stay tuned to learn about

November’s author visit!

St. Basil’s Teacher Launches Historical Publication: Toronto's

Fighting 75th in the Great War, 1915-1919

Congratulations to St. Basil’s Teacher Mr. Tim Stewart, on the launch of his book

“Toronto’s Fighting 75th In The Great War 1915-1919”. Mr. Stewart is the

Department Head of Social Sciences at St. Basil-The-Great College School, and

volunteered to write this story for the regiment. This labor of love has taken him

well over a decade to get to complete. Click here to read more about Mr.

Letter from Premier Wynne to Director of Education

TCDSB’s Director of Education Rory McGuckin received a letter of thanks

from Premier Wynne last month for sharing a copy of the “TCDSB Sings O

Canada” CD. Premier Wynne wrote, “The unique versions of O Canada

were a wonderful way to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of

Bishop Allen Student Named Grand Prize Winner in A&E “Lives That Make a

Difference” Essay Contest

On October 30th A&E® Network announced Christina MacDonald as winner of the Grand Prize—

$3000! - in the Grade 9 to 12 category of the A&E Lives That Make a Difference Essay

Contest. Christina’s essay, chosen from over a thousand submissions, focused on Senator Murray

Sinclair’s important work and influence, writing that he has been “a figure of empowerment to

Canadians, showing that the most expeditious way to equality is not by forgetting the past, but

through making efforts to reconcile and move forward.” Click here to read more about Christina’s

St. Mother Teresa Contributes to MomenTO Time

Capsule

On Friday, October 27th students from St. Mother Teresa’s arts

program presented Councillor Neethan Shan with an original

painting for the MomenTO Time Capsule in honour of Canada’s

150th. Grade 12 student, Samantha Lozorda's draft artwork was

selected to be painted on the canvas that will now be placed

into the time capsule, which is set to be re-opened in 50 years.

The artwork represents the views of youth and how they see the

future of Toronto, and also highlights the Malvern community.
