Chairman’s Message

The BOT discussion topic for the month -D-2014-20: AKA Web Site – generated a great deal of discussion as expected. Specifics included:

Acknowledgement of the ‘magnitude of effort’ provided by the previous web gurus;

Recognition that the AKA needs to move forward in this arena of com-munication to broadcast its message/potential appeal to current and future members by getting outside opinions/help from external website experts.

Additionally, the other topic of conversation was generated by the inad-vertent and “unnoticed until ballots were released’ mistake on the bal-lot itself. The conversations were as expected – how to correct, how to properly acknowledge and how to move forward with the least amount of discomfort for the members of the AKA that do take the time to vote.

Board of TrusTees Business updaTe

arT LeuTerman – aKa secreTary

Hello Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone who voted in the elections for the new Board of Trustees members and for the changes in the AKA Bylaws. I don’t have the results yet, or even know how many of you voted, but I should be able to announce the results in next month’s BNL.

I would also like to thank Tom Grady. Tom has retired as web-master so he can focus on his writing and on building his pub-lishing company, which helps other independent authors complete and publish their books. Tom has done too much for the AKA to list here, but since I have known him he has been an import part of UNYKA and one of the driving forces behind the Northeast Weekend, brought the BNL from paper to the internet, hosted or co-hosted numerous AKA national conventions, and served as webmaster. I met Tom at the first Northeast Weekend Killifish (NEW) Convention in 2004. Although I have been keeping fish since I was a kid, I had only “discovered” killies a couple of years earlier and had only joined the AKA in 2003. Tom was one of the the first killienuts I met in person, and warmly welcomed me to the Northeast Weekend. I had arrived early and by myself, and ended up going out to dinner with Tom, Ron Schulz and probably Jim Randall. I met a lot of great people that weekend, many of whom have become close friends.

On the front page you will see that there are a number of killie-related events this month. If you are in Texas, the Federation of Texas Aquarium Societies is having their annual conventeion. While it is an all species convention, it has an AKA Sanctioned Killifish Show and gladly accepts mail-ins, which qualify for KEY and KHY points. The Wisconsin Area Killifish Organization (WAKO) has a Killifish Convention com-ing up and is also sanctioned by the AKA. There are also events in Argentina and Portugal. If you have never been to a fish convention any of these are within travel range, I strongly recommend attending. That first NEW convention was one of the first conventions I attended and it was a life-changing event. Since then I have at-tended as many conventions as I have been able, made many friends and improved my fishkeeping exponentially. I have also had the change to see and own more fish than I ever though possible.

Best wishes,Rich Pierce

AKA COMMITTEE REPORTS

Current Key Standings

This year’s show season kicked off with a show in Texas hosted by our TAKO affiliate club. When the dust set-tled, Art Leuterman posted an unprecedented number of points. His point total for this one show would have put him in fourth place overall at the end of last year’s show season. In the words of another Texas citizen, “Mission accomplished.” Way to go, Art! Following are the current top standings.

1. Art Leuterman 2702. Gary Greenwood 1003. Jim Kostich 584. David Mikkelsen 475. Gary Pack 476. Gerald Rosenbeck 447. Stephen Rabke 248. Allan Semeit 229. Sue Katz 2110. Keith Cook 1711. Charlie Nunziata 15

The next show will be hosted by the Michigan Killifish Association, Sept. 27 and 28. Complete KEY stand-ings are available on the AKA website and include all people entering fish in shows. To get to the results, click on the “AKA Programs” link, then on the “KEY Program” link.

AKA Digital Presentation Program

September 2014 Update:

Members continue to download the presentation. We now have a new presentation, “Introduction to Killi-fish for Advanced Hobbyists”, we feel certain will go over well at general fish clubs or killifish clubs. Contact [email protected] for more details.

Sample slides from the new presentation:

How it works:

To obtain the presentation, simply e-mail your name and e-mail address to [email protected]. The coordi-nators will send you a link you can use to download the presentation, in Powerpoint format. A typical presenta-tion is around 30-40 megabytes, so you'll need a little free space on your computer for the download.

When you present a program to a club the AKA will do-nate a free membership to that club (limit one per club per year). The host club may give, raffle, or auction that membership to someone at the meeting.

Once you have the contact information for the new member, send that to [email protected]. Please be sure that the contact information contains the recipi-ent's name, address and e-mail address.

Wild Killifish Collection Commit-tee Seeks Latest Updates

David Mikkelson is requesting anyone who does a collection of killifish anywhere in the world contact him with their latest in-formation. The Killifish Collection Committee plans to update the listings. Dave can be contacted through Facebook (Killish Wild Collections) or his NEW email address [email protected]

The George Maier Fund, created to honor the memory of George Maier, founding member of the American Kil-lifish Association and the Chicago Killifish Association, is the only charitable fund dedicated exclusively to the study of killifish. The Fund provides financial assistance to proj-ects that enhance the knowledge of killifish, especially as applied to their reproduction, life cycle, maintenance, nutritional requirements and food sources, biology, ecol-ogy, habitat, conservation, nomenclatural and biological relationships.

Back Issues of A.K.A. and D.K.G. journals are now available:

Our generous donors have provided the Fund with many years of back issues of both JAKA, and the German Killifish Association DKG Journals. There are year sets as well as individual issues available, all in good to excellent condition and all available at very attractive prices. The list is much too long for this publication; just send an e-mail requesting either or both lists to [email protected] and take this opportunity to round out your jour-nal library. 100% of all proceeds go to the Maier Fund treasury.

We wish to thank all our generous donors and the par-ticipants in our fund raising efforts for their continued support in 2014. Remember that 98% of your donation goes directly to finance projects, certainly one of the high-est rates for any charitable fund.2014 Donation Goals

Although we continue to lag our 2014 goals, we look forward to another active fourth quarter, typically the pe-

riod over which we receive our largest number of dona-tions. Considering a donation ? Now is the time to make that tax deductible donation and join us in achieving our 2014 revenue goals.

Donations are accepted through the A.K.A. website, or directly via Paypal or check. Send direct Paypal dona-tions to [email protected], or your check to our Treasurer, Jack Heller, 14212 Trail Top Drive, Chester-field, MO. 63017. The Fund also accepts books, periodi-cals and hobby related items for our revenue programs. For additional information on donating such materials, contact Charlie at [email protected]. The Maier Fund is a 201(c)3 public charity. All donations are tax exempt.

Marketing/Communications Coordinator: We are still looking for someone to fill the marketing/communica-tion coordinator position that was formerly held by Dave Suffia. This task involves communicating with other con-servation groups, arranging for articles for both this news-letter and for JAKA, and to disseminate the promotional materials. If interested in this challenge, please contact me.

Aplocheilus lineatus: We are dealing with a few impor-tant issues that were not resolved in 2013. The first of these is our search to find the “original form” of Aplochei-lus lineatus and adopt it as the core species representing the genus Aplocheilus. The term “original form” may be inaccurate as we are having trouble determining just what that is. We have rather arbitrarily defined the “original” as the essentially green fish so common in the 1970’s, the one that were then commonly available in local tropical fish stores. The currently available “Golden Wonder” and “Red” forms are the selectively-bred product of commer-cial Asian breeders. Given the large and inexpensive avail-ability of these commercial forms, collection and distribu-tion of wild stock appears unlikely. As a result, the KCC has abandoned the effort to re-establish a wild form of Aplocheilus lineatus in the hobby.

Epiplatys lamottei Re-launch: Rick Ivik, our new E. la-mottei coordinator has organized a new team for this ven-erable species. If interested in joining this team, please contact Rick at: [email protected].

We are also attempting to identify whether any of the various populations of E. lamottei remain within the hobby. In addition to the aquarium strain, we included three populations in the original breeder program. They were: Nzérékoré and Simandou from Guinea, and Sala-yea, Liberia, the most common in the hobby. If you are maintaining any of these populations, please send me an e-mail at [email protected].

Fundulopanchax oeseri and Fp. walkeri GH2/74 Kutun-se: These species have declined precipitously over the last several years and we have gotten increasingly concerned that they are in trouble in the hobby. We are asking those members holding these species to contact the committee and indicate their status.

Active Breeder Teams: Maintaining any of the following species? Consider joining one of our active breeder teams and help your fellow members in guaranteeing that they will be available to the future generation of killi-hobbyists.

Beyond the Basics:Fishrooms, Breeding and Nothos”

Sat. Nov. 1st 1:30-3pm

Everyone seems to keep and breed their killifish differently but still em-ploying the “basic” methods of mops, peat, live foods etc... This talk will fo-cus on different approaches at getting “difficult” fish to spawn when you want them to spawn.

Tricks for breeding stubborn Aphyose-mion will be discussed as well as South American Annuals. For Nothobranchius the important issue is adequate feeding during early development so that you get large adults for spawning. There are tricks to accomplishing this and these tricks can be applied to multiple species and genera.

The setting up of a fishroom is not a simple matter. Many considerations need to be taken into account. Sev-eral setups that Tyrone has employed, as well as those of friends, will be dis-cussed with respect to their pros and cons. An account of Nothobranchius scientific research will be given. The sci-entific studies of Nothobranchius aging has revealed some useful information for the Nothobranchius hobbyist (as well as general public).

For more info & read Tyrone’s bio, visit: www.aka.org/wako email:[email protected]
