March 21 - April 20. The Zodiac sign of Aries

HISTORY OF THE DIAMOND AS THE APRIL BIRTHSTONE: Diamonds are a thing of beauty and the ultimate gift for a loved one. Thought to be one of the hardest substances on the globe, diamonds date back billions of years. The diamond is the traditional. Birthstone of April and holds significant meaning for those born in that month, thought to provide the wearer with better relationship and an increase in inner strength. Wearing diamonds is purported to bring other benefits such as balance, clarity and abundance. It’s also symbolic of eternal love, and those fortunate to call April the month of their birth will enjoy the following history behind this rare gem. There are numerous legends and myths about birthstone healing powers and their therapeutic influence. According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. For the full effect, individuals needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

Ben Walker Month of April Flowers, the Sweet pea or \ Daisy, to celebrate Easter, Good Friday, Palm Sunday a Passover. The April Birth Flower is the Sweet pea. The History and traditions surrounding the April Birth Flower, the Sweet pea is fascinating. There are many myths and legends about the origins of this tradition. It is believed that birthday celebrations originated in the Roman Empire and the origins of birth month flowers, such as the Sweet pea, could be said to date back to these times. During Roman birthday celebrations family and friends offered congratulations and brought gifts. The gifts included gemstone jewelry, such as the Diamond, and also flowers - the first traditions and origins of the April Birth Flower. The colors of the April Birth Flower, the Sweet pea, are extremely varied because so many varieties have been developed. Sweet peas therefore come in a huge mix of soft colors and bi-colors. Good Times @ Adult Enrichment

Contributed by Dan Rogusky

I think the best thing about Adult Enrichment is the camaraderie and support between fellow clients and staff. I like being able to pretty much pull anyone aside and say, “… What should I do about this or that problem?” The lines of communication are always open here at Adult Enrichment. Sadly, the art of conversation is becoming a lost art in today’s very technologically advanced world. When in doubt, talk it out.

My Upcoming Vacation Contributed By Danielle Lichty

I’m looking forward to July because I am going with my boyfriend’s family to Georgia for a family reunion. I am sure they will have lots of good food and I am hoping some seafood. I especially like shrimp. They will probably play games too. I went to a family reunion one other time, a long time ago, and it was lots of fun. I have only been to Georgia once before so I don’t know my way around. It is hot in Georgia in July so I will make sure to bring lots of cool clothes. I would also, like to go on a cruise because I have never been on a boat.

One day we used the parachute to have some fun at A.E. We stood in a circle and held the parachute and moved it up and down. There was a ball on the parachute and it bounced. Sometimes it came off. We threw it back in. We got tired of doing the parachute and so we made baskets in a bucket. Some of the participants were good at it. We had a ball.

8-10 servings INGREDIENTS For the Toast: 16 ounce loaf of French bread, cubed 8 oz. Package of cream cheese (I use about ¾ of package) cubed into small pieces 6 large eggs 1 quart half and half 1/2 cup butter, melted 1/4 cup maple syrup Topping: 16 oz. container of frozen, sliced strawberries 10 ounce strawberry jam

BAKED DEEP-DISH STRAWBERRY FRENCH

TOAST DIRECTIONS Arrange half of cubed bread in a lightly greased, deep 9 by 13 inch pan. Sprinkle with cubed cream cheese, and cover with remaining bread cubes. Whisk together eggs, half and half, butter, and maple syrup. Pour evenly over the bread cubes, making sure they all absorb the egg mixture. Cover with foil and refrigerate for 8 hours. (I suggest preparing the recipe the night before, and refrigerating it overnight.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake covered, for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. While French toast is baking, combine and heat topping ingredients in a saucepan. Cut French toast into 8-10 servings. Plate each serving, then ladle heated topping onto each serving.

AE Outing to Leisure Lanes Contributed By Kate and Ally

A group of us went to Leisure Lanes on February 25th. We bowled, had pizza and we played pool. We thoroughly enjoyed being with our friends. A couple of us have our own bowling balls which we brought along. We all learned how to play pool and divided into groups around 2 or 3 pool tables. Ernie and Robert and Chrissy were there, along with Chelsea and Lisa- we were all surprised at how good Chelsea and Ernie were at pool. We learned that you have to be careful with the cue stick so no one gets poked. There was blue chalk to put on the end of the pool sticks to help the ball go straight into the pocket of the table. We have decided that we would like to try to play pool again and want to schedule it for a future AE club date. It was fun!!

Q: Have you ever been lost or in a dangerous situation? Jon M: I can remember being lost a couple of times while traveling in the car. My dad was driving. We looked for landmarks until it was finally resolved. It was getting late and getting dark and I was getting worried. Q: As a child, where were your favorite places to go with your family? Laura: We would go to Ocean City, MD in the beach house. We also went to Disney World. I was 6 years old. At one point, I got lost, but I got a huge stuffed Pokémon out of it. Q: Where did you like to go with your father? Danielle: I liked going on car rides with him. Q: Are you afraid of doctors? Lynne: Yes. Q: What kind of things did you do with your school friends? Carla: We used to play on the swings. I remember one boy brought his spider monkey to school on the back of his bike... “A real monkey?” Yes, and it would stay with him. “And the teacher didn't mind?” Nope. Q: Describe a childhood birthday. Wilfredo: I remember getting a Ken doll when I was young. I would play Barbies with my friends and be Ken.

VACATION Contributed By Leroy Poletti

I took a vacation the month of January. My favorite thing about my vacation was sleeping in. I played with my dogs and cats. I didn’t get out much because of the snow. I watched TV mostly the stock market. I was stuck in bed for four days because I got sick. My mom and I ate out once at Friendly’s. I had a tuna melt and big sundae. My favorite thing about my vacation was eating out.

END OF WINTER Contributed

By Angie Spencer

I’m so glad to say goodbye to winter. I’m glad I don’t have to wear my heavy coat and all that stuff anymore. Its time to say hello spring and summer! I like to hear the birds chirping and to see the nice blue sky. I like to wear lighter clothes. I like to drink cold drinks in the summer instead of hot ones. It’s nice to go places when its warm outside. I like to take trips to places like

Baltimore or Philadelphia. Welcome spring!

“Survivor" Cagayan is where 18 people were divided into 3 tribes of 6. The tribes are called Brains, Brawn, Beauty! The first week, which was televised on 2-26-14 saw the "Brains" team lose the first 2 challenges, this meant that 2 team members were voted off by the tribe and the tribe has been reduced to 4 tribe members instead of 6 like the Brawn and Beauty tribes have on there team. The first to be voted off were men, so in the Brains tribe there are 3 women and only 1 man left! This TV show runs every Wednesday night on CBS at 8 p.m. The finale will be televised on Mother's Day, May 11th 2014. Look for my article in the May issue of the AE Chronicles, unfortunately the winner will not be announced until after the May issue deadline, so look for another article in the June newsletter about "Survivor" and I will announce the winner.

THRIFTY NIFTY CLOTHES SHOPPIN Independent Living Skills Class (ILS)

In ILS, we have been discussing how to save money when shopping, especially with clothes. Here are some nifty ideas we came up with: First, ask yourself these questions: Do you like it? Do you need it? Does it fit? Is it within your budget? This will help you avoid spending when you really don't need to. When shopping at stores, start at the back of the store. That's where you'll find the best deals. Just look for the “clearance” signs. When shopping in department stores, never pay full price. They have raised the prices so that they can put them “on sale.” Also use the coupons from the mail, newspaper, and online. When shopping in discount stores, make sure item is quality enough for the purpose. Don't forget the outlets. They're good for factory and discounted prices for name brand items, and for getting some fresh air shopping from store to store. Another good alternative is buying nice, used clothing. Where? Try yard sales if you're easy to fit and please; donation stores like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and ReUse It, etc.; thrift stores; and consignment shops. Happy shopping... and don't spend too much!

Dan’s aid Contributed by Dan Rogusky

I know what it’s like to feel like you’re doing all the work in your household. It probably is not that way but if it is I would suggest asking your other family members for their help with getting chores done. If it really is that way, you can have the knowledge that at least the job(s) are done. This does not give you the right to do a slip- shod job to get even. Knowing you did your best is something you should strive for! Also, revenge never works. If you would like help just politely ask for it.

The Sound of Music Contributed By Jayann McCue

I liked watching ‘The Sound of Music’ because they sang well. I recognized some of the songs from when we did ‘The Sound of Music’ a few years ago. It was good with Julie Andrews in it. I am singing the song ‘So Long, Farewell’ in the spring musical. It was based on the story of the Von Trapp family. I would recommend it. If you are looking for a good musical, you should watch it.

SCIENCE CLASS Contributed By

Victor Miller

In science class we are designing new planets. We have given then names and descriptions. We have been working in pairs on these projects. Some planets have waters, some are hot, and some have animals. A few of them could have people live on them. Some have moons around them. I have really enjoyed working on this project. Next project in science we will be having a science fair.

PENGUINS Contributed By Laura Sauder

In Beth’s Wildlife Class we are learning about penguins. All the students are doing poster boards, stories, and videos of penguins. Penguins are so cute and soft and they love to swim in the water. My favorite movie is about penguins; it’s Mr. poppers penguins. My favorite class is wildlife because it is about animals. I like Beth as a teacher because she loves animals and bees. I love doing projects because they are fun. My favorite penguin is named Victoria.

SPRING Contributed By

Mary Jane Robbins Spring is almost here and thank god for that. It’s time for planting flowers, going on walks and hikes, and wearing shorts. People can go bird watching and attend cook-outs. It’s the perfect time for outdoor pools and trips to the beaches and fairs. Or you can just sit outside, relax and visit with family and friends.

TRASH FASHION SHOW

This year A.E held its annual trash fashion show, creating clothing out of trash bags, newspaper, and duct tape. The participants spent weeks perfecting their looks for the big event, however before the clothing was constructed everyone sketched out their dream outfit to mimic a real fashion designer. “The fashion show was awesome, and fantastic!” – Ernie. “It was fun dressing up in trash” Laughed Angie and Dewey! We all had fun, and can’t wait to do it again next year!
