Flying isn’t going to the dogs, but it’s

clear there are dogs who love to fly.

Spike is one and he flies with his human

in a Hummel Ultra Cruiser. While it’s a

one-place airplane, Spike doesn’t take

up enough room to cause any problems.

Even those pesky weight–and-balance

calculations are a breeze since Spike sits

right on the CG. He has flown to LXT so

many times, he knows the way. Just

point him in the general direction and

he’ll show up at a Young Eagles event

ready to enjoy the attention. What fun!

It's February and time for our annual banquet. This year it will be held at

the Eagle Hangar (that's our blue one!) and since we have a new heating

system, it should work out well! Now, don't forget and go to the Hilton

Garden Inn, 'cause we won't be there!

As I am reasonably sure by now you know our guest speaker will be Jack

Pelton, chairman of the board and CEO of the Experimental Aircraft

Association. Reservations are being made at a rather rapid pace so if you

don't want to be left out, call Pam now at 816 350-2289 and send in your

check! The hangar space is 60' X 60' and will only hold so many. This year

the food will be catered, buffet style, and priced very reasonably at $20.00

per person. We must provide a minimum guarantee by February 12, so do

not delay.

Pam has been trying for the last 25 years to get the president of EAA to

attend our banquet and her persistence has paid off. The only other EAA

president to visit our chapter was Tom Poberezny who happened to be in the

area while we were hosting the Ford Tri-Motor. He stopped by for a couple

of hours and I was informed by the Tri-Motor crew Tom was impressed with

our chapter. Check out the pictures of Tom on our meeting room wall.

The flying and Young Eagles season is rapidly approaching and there is

some new stuff in the works. It seems Young Eagle pilots must now pass a

background check and do some training before flying Young Eagles. I don't

know all there is to know about this or the why of it. But, I'm sure our vice-

president and Young Eagles Coordinator does and will inform us as to what

we have to do. So stay tuned and I'll see you at the banquet!

Blue skies and tailwinds,

EAA CHAPTER 91

MINUTES OF THE MEETING

January 18, 2016

The meeting of EAA Chapter 91 was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by president, Larry

Young in the chapter meeting room at Lee's Summit Airport. The Pledge of

Allegiance to the flag was led by Mike Dooley. Larry welcomed visitors and guests

including Mike Koop, Jerry Burns, and Bryan Bury.

The minutes of the December 21, 2015 meeting were approved as printed in the

January newsletter. Pam provided the balance on hand in the checking account. She

passed a sign-up sheet for the February 20 banquet and said extra fliers were

available. Pam said chapter name badges could be ordered as well as chapter caps

and patches were available along with polo shirts could be ordered to size. The

program for the February 20 banquet would be Jack Pelton, CEO and president of

EAA. Everyone was welcome to attend and reservations required by February 15.

Chris Hope explained the IMC meetings, now affiliated with EAA. Meetings would

be held in the Chapter 91 meeting room on the second Monday of each month

beginning February 8, 2016 on a trial basis.

Young Eagles Coordinator Chris St. Germain said he expected another group with

Wright Flight to come to LXT in the coming spring to again participate in Young

Eagles as part of their program. Pete Connors passed on a compliment from a Young

Eagles pilot who said Chapter 91 rallies were the best organized he had participated

in.

Regarding wants and needs, Wayne Moore still had a wooden Pacesetter propeller for

sale.

Chris Hope volunteered to clean and set-up the meeting room before the March, 2016

meeting. Larry thanked Fred Hulen for getting the meeting room ready for the

January meeting. Chuck Gosselin asked volunteers to come out to help get the

hangar ready for the banquet. Set-up would begin with moving planes at 1:30 P.M.

Friday, February 19.

After the break, the 50-50 drawing was won by Larry Rhodes. Dennis Davis won a

set of ear-phones and Steve Tyner won a tripod. The program, “An Update on Lee's

Summit Airport” was presented by John Ohrazda, manager, Lee's Summit Airport.

The meeting adjourned 8:40 P.M.

JANUARY’S PROGRAM – THE STATE OF THE AIRPORT

CHAPTER 91 SWEATSHIRTS AVAILABLE

Pam Ratliff announced that silkscreened Chapter 91 sweatshirts and hoodies are

now available. Various styles will sell between $30 and $41. Questions, ask Pam.

If anyone thought John Ohrazda’s presentation about the state of the airport would be dull and boring, they found out very quickly that was not the case. John moved along quickly and with enthusiasm detailing the changes that had been made and are being made to Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport, and those changes were legion. From past and future runway extensions to the possibility of a tower, everyone’s questions were addressed and answered with conviction. It was clear to everyone that John knows his airport and the pilots who use it. John used graphics to illustrate where and how things were moving, including the ultimate shift of the administration building and ramp area to the east side of runways 18 / 36. He anticipated that project would start in 2017. John also discussed how some of the old hangars would be torn down, the taxiways upgraded and shifted to slightly different positions on the airport. Yes, things will change. What about having a restaurant at the airport? John said he’s all for it but there were zoning issues that would need to be addressed well as other bureaucratic stumbling blocks that seem to adhere to municipal properties like airports. John did an excellent job of pointing out how LXT has grown and adapted to the needs of the aviation community and the surrounding area as well. He took what could have been a difficult topic and made it alive and interesting. So much so, that the questions had to be cut off so we could close the meeting. Good job, John. We’re very glad you’re helping LXT become the aviation powerhouse it is.

FEBRUARY’S PROGRAM

IMC CLUB MEETS AT EAGLE HANGAR

ANOTHER YOUNG EAGLE CHOOSES AVIATION

Young Eagles Coordinator Chris St. Germain recently learned that Lizzy Barclay, of

Plattsburg, MO, was notified that she will attend college at Embry Riddle Aviation

Academy this fall. She will study for her BS in Aeronautical Science. Lizzy became

indoctrinated through our Young Eagles program having flown with Chapter 91’s

Young Eagles pilots. She is taking dual instruction at Roosterville airport and her

inspiring story is one Chris will have to tell you more about! Good luck, Lizzy!

Now that the IMC Club has been folded into EAA, all EAA members are eligible to receive the benefits of that organization. So if you are instrument rated, not instrument rated but would like to be, or just an arm chair instrument wannabe, you should look into the IMC Club. Our own Chris Hope, CFI, leads the gatherings on the second Monday of each month so come out February 15th to see for your- self what it’s all about. It will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. Using scenarios and case-study formats, Chris discusses and illustrates what to expect from and how to handle situations under IMC conditions and IFR rules. These are the things you’d love to discuss with someone when you’re in the soup. Since that’s not readily available, the IMC Club approach helps fill in the blanks. Chris has an e-mail notification and announcement system so be sure to link up with him to get your name on that list. Then show up at the chapter’s favorite clubhouse, and join in the fun.

Remember that our next meeting will be on Saturday evening, February 20th at

the Chapter 91 hangar. Jack Pelton, formerly of Cessna Aircraft and now CEO of

the Experimental Aircraft Association, will be our guest speaker. As you might

imagine, a great deal of interest has been shown for Mr. Pelton’s visit so be sure

you’re included. Contact Pam Ratliff to make your reservations. Tickets are just

$20 each so it’s quite affordable. Since the chapter is unable to serve anything

harder than soft water, BYOB is suggested. And with the road changes, you can

approach LXT only from the south, so don’t go the wrong direction. Do not miss

this exciting and informative meeting. That’s February 20 at 6:00 p.m.

REALITY STRIKES YOUNG EAGLES PROGRAM

Looking around at any recent Chapter 91 event will prove most of us are finding modern society is far, far different from how we grew up. Back then, we could walk to and from school without parental supervision and would go play with our friends just about anywhere in the neighborhood. We didn’t worry about adults doing things differently from our parents. To modify a phrase from the not too distant past, it was a kinder, gentler nation.

But today is not the same. The news stories wreak of children being accosted and abused by the very people they should be able to trust. If you’re working with kids today, even in scouting or youth sports, it’s quite likely you will have to submit to a thorough and invasive background check. Your criminal history will be explored even if you don’t have one. And much like trying to board a commercial flight, you get the feeling you’re suspected of terrible wrongdoing even if you can’t even spell it. But such is modern life. And now, that includes our Young Eagles pilots and volunteers. It seems no one is immune.

EAA headquarters has instigated a program that includes online training and a background check for anyone involved in having contact with our Young Eagles kids. By May 1 you must have successfully completed this intervening roadblock before you can participate in the program. You may have received a letter from EAA concerning this new requirement but if not, you will find much more information available about it at http://www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-education-and-resources/eaa-youth-education/youth-protection-policy-and-program Here you can get more information about the program, who’s required to participate and how to continue. I’m sure this will be discussed further at upcoming chapter meetings so please stay tuned. It is what it is, folks. I’m just surprised it’s been so long in coming.
