THE MYSTERIOUS STORY

No book of Chicago ghostlore is complete without the story of fireman Francis “Frank” Leavy.

The story goes that one day in the 1920s, Frank was in the fire station, leaning his hand on the window and saying “this is my last day with the fire department,” or “I’m dying tonight,” or something equally cheery.

That night, there was a massive fire that claimed the lives of several fire fighters, including Levy. The next day, his handprint was still on the window, and could not be removed

WHO WAS FRANCIS LEAVY ?

Francis Leavy was a dedicated firefighter during the 1920s.

He loved his job, and his peers loved him. He was a pleasant man always ready with a smile and a helping hand.

On April 18, 1924, Frank’s colleagues became aware a change in his demeanor.

Suddenly, he was an unsmiling, grunting guy washing a large window at the Chicago Fire Department, not looking at anyone or talking.

MYSTERY : FACT OR FICTION

Up till now no scientific explanation either occurred or have chances of occurring making this a true mystery.

The glass on which the print was on was also destroyed after 20 years by a ball. So no one has a real chance of explaining what might have happened.

Some still believe though that Francis Leavy’s hand was burning and his skin was pasted on the glass.

EFFECT ON THE PEOPLE

However, the thing about folk mythology is that it isn’t all true. It doesn’t have to be; whether Resurrection Mary, for instance, is real or not doesn’t make one bit of difference on her effect on Chicago history.

And plenty of supposedly haunted places have no real story to back the hauntings up (aka The Red Lion) or the stories that go around are totally false (aka The Excalibur Club).

Thankfully, no one made up any ghost stories for the Ultimate Chicago ghost book.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY ??

All of this belief has been spread through the fact that Francis Leavy predicted his own death.

People have tried to prove his handprint and they may not be wrong. Ultimately, it all comes down to the fact whether one believes in such things or not.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS !!
