UNLV’s faculty, staff, and students reach out and partner with the community in finding workable solutions to the challenges facing the Las Vegas metro area.

In May 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded UNLV more than $2.1 million to lead four new research projects that will advance nuclear technologies in support of the nation’s energy goals.

In July 2009, the UNLV Center for Energy Research, in partnership with Pulte Homes and NV Energy, received $5.7 million in funding from the DOE to develop a community of Las Vegas homes that incorporate energy-efficient features and advanced utility metering to cut residential energy use by more than half.

Within driving distance of UNLV, outdoor recreation includes kayaking on Lake Mead, rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon, and skiing at Mount Charleston. With clubs and organizations such as Outdoor Adventures, students leave campus on the weekends to enjoy the surrounding areas.

In today’s world, engineers are called upon to find real-world solutions to technical challenges to improve the standard of living and quality of life. The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering produces graduates who are well prepared to take on this challenge. The undergraduate program affords each student the opportunity to participate in research in addition to the theory taught in the classrooms, a philosophy not shared by many undergraduate programs. Faculty and students conduct research in areas such as renewable energy, homeland security, nanotechnology, and structures. This experience prepares students to compete in regional and national competitions and the senior-year capstone project, which helps students enhance their resumes for graduate school or for their future careers.

I was also selected by Deloitte to participate at the company’s National Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz. The College of Fine Arts at UNLV is one of the most rapidly growing and largest fine arts programs in the country. UNLV surpasses the national average in the placement of students into medical school. In 2008, nearly 90 percent of the students in UNLV’s preprofessional health program were accepted into medical or dental school. On a national level, only around 40 percent of students who apply are accepted into medical and dental school.

The College of Sciences aspires to develop and nurture students and faculty who generate knowledge at the forefront of science. The discovery and understanding of the physical world, including biological systems, the investigation of alternative energy resources, and fundamental questions concerning the origin and evolution of earth and the universe, are key subject areas in the college’s curriculum.
