    Unlike blocks 1 and 2, this Pinwheel Star block uses a Four-Patch unit in each corner to continue the chain layout present in the original quilt. The simpler star design has only four points.

    Materials• 9×21" piece (fat eighth) cream

    print• Scrap of red print • 9×21" piece (fat eighth) aqua

    print• 31⁄2" square purple print

    Finished blocks: 9" square

    Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width. Measurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

    Cut FabricsCut pieces in the following order.

    From cream print: • 1—2×21" strip • 2—37⁄8" squares , cutting each

    in half diagonally for a total of 4 triangles

    From red print:• 2—37⁄8" squares , cutting each

    in half diagonally for a total of 4 triangles

    From aqua print:• 1—2×21" strip

    Assemble Block1. Sew together one cream print

    and one red print triangle to make a triangle-square (Diagram 1). Press seam toward red triangle. Triangle-square should be 31⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four triangle-squares total.

    2. Referring to Diagram 2, sew together an aqua print 2×21" strip and cream print 2×21" strip to make a strip set. Cut the strip set into eight 2"-wide segments.

    3. Join two segments to make a Four-Patch unit (Diagram 3). Press seam in one direction. Four-Patch unit should be 31⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four Four-Patch units total.

    4. Lay out triangle-squares, Four-Patch units, and purple print 31⁄2" square in three horizontal rows (Block Assembly Diagram).

    5. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams away from triangle-squares. Join rows to make a block. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 91⁄2" square including seam allowances.
