ArtsFashion and Clothing students pitched their

designs to high street fashion giant Matalan. For the fourth year running the College has partnered up with Matalan to provide undergraduates with the opportunity to get an exclusive insight into the fashion industry.

The College, which has long standing links with the national retail brand, provides students with a real insight and experience into fashion and clothing. The partnership with Matalan also provides students with an opportunity to secure an internship with the retailer.

Matalan’s Childrenswear Design Manager, Sarah Edwards, visited the College’s School for the Arts to meet the programme’s first year Fashion and Clothing students. The students had previously met Sarah at the Wigan Matalan store where they were given a brief to create a new night-time childrenswear range.

The project required the fashion enthusiasts to research competitor designs, writing a 2,000 word report and presenting a collection to Sarah. The pitching process then enabled the Design Manager to award the top three designs.

Sarah Edwards, Childrenswear Design Manager at Matalan said, “The standard of work I have seen today has been strong. I think it is important to get a real feel for what the industry is like and this type of project offers that opportunity.”

Fashion and Clothing student, Jordan Munro, added, “This is a big opportunity for us. Matalan is a hugely successful company and this is a chance to get a ‘foot in the door’. We know we are lucky as not all students get a chance like this.”

Fashion and Clothing Tutor, Jo Woods, commented, “The higher level course in Fashion and Clothing is a very industry focused course and meeting Sarah and working on a project for Matalan is an invaluable addition to what the College offers.”
