“Like so many Muskies, I have benefited— and continue to benefit—from my Muskingum

experience. I believe in the University’s enduring mission, am grateful for the opportunities

my education provided, and am committed to helping secure similar opportunities

for future generations of Muskies.”–LANCE ROEPE ‘70

Dear Alumni & Friends, Thank you for your belief in the power of a Muskingum education! Your gifts have transformed this campus and the lives of our students, and every day I see the results of your generosity and commitment.

Year after year, your support has a lasting impact. You have made possible the construction of six new state-of-the-art facilities. With

the completion this fall of our latest project, the Roberta A. Smith University Library, we will have added 120,000 square feet of space to our campus for enhanced academic programs and campus life opportunities.

Your gifts ensure that Muskingum is able to attract and retain exceptionally qual-ified faculty members, and the endowed faculty chairs you have established will ensure excellent teaching in perpetuity.

Each year your investment in Muskingum yields greater scholarship assistance for students, new academic program development, and new experiential and co-curricular learning opportunities that enhance our students’ preparation for their futures.

With this report, we once again express our deep and abiding appreciation to you. We celebrate the service of the Muskies who shared their time and wisdom with our students as Convocation and Commencement speakers during the 2014-2015 year, and we honor our extraordinary alumni and faculty who were recognized with the President’s Medal, Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Faculty Award, or induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

You are the driving force behind Muskingum’s ability to uphold our tradition of ed-ucational excellence as we carry out our timeless mission. Because of your generosity and commitment, untold lives are changed and promising futures unfold. Thank you again for the vital role you play in the future of this University and the lives of generations and generations of Muskingum alumni yet to come.

Sincerely, Anne C. Steele President

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

With Profound Appreciation

Dear Fellow Alumni & Friends, The generosity and dedication of fellow Muskies and friends never cease to amaze me—and to make me proud to be part of this community.

As you can see from the listings on the pages that follow, in 2014-2015 once again thousands of you continued the proud tradition of giving back to Muskingum. Please know that every gift

is appreciated and put to good use strengthening the Long Magenta Line and its contributions to our nation and our world.

For the past 16 years, Muskingum has benefited from the exceptional vision and leadership of President Anne Steele. As many of you know, she has informed the Board of Trustees of her intention to retire at the end of this academic year.

President Steele’s tenure has been marked by extraordinary achievements: new facilities, new majors and degree programs, our first endowed chairs, and countless other advances that have laid a strong foundation for the future. Furthermore, she has encour-aged historic levels of giving from alumni and friends, enabling us to fund construction of six new buildings without the burden of debt. As a result, as the chart on page 39 indicates, Muskingum ranks among the best for fiscal fitness, both in our peer group and nationwide.

These are your accomplishments, too, for none of them would have been possible without your support and commitment. If you have not been to Muskingum recently, I encourage you to attend some of our events to see the impact of your generosity firsthand.

I also urge you to spend some time on our website, www.muskingum.edu, to learn more about the students and faculty whose lives you have touched and, in many cases, changed forever. On their behalf, and that of the Board of Trustees and entire Muskingum community, I extend our deepest gratitude.

Sincerely, Robert W. Patin Jr. ’64 Chair, Development Committee of the Board of Trustees

William W. Goetz ’86

Muskingum University held its Convocation on August 26, featuring an address by 1986 alumnus William W. Goetz.

In his address, Mr. Goetz told the students, “My best advice to you is simply to show up. Show up for your classes, show up for events on campus, and show up to support your friends. If you truly engage during your time here, you will benefit richly from it.”

William (Bill) Goetz is Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Sysco Corporation. A Fortune 500 company with annual sales of $44 billion, Sysco is the global leader in providing food products and foodservice equipment and supplies to restaurant, hospitality, educational and health care facilities.

Mr. Goetz earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Muskingum in business and economics, with a minor in speech. Immediately following his graduation, he began

his career as a management trainee at Cintas Corporation, a Fortune 1000 company that provides corporate identity, uniform, safety, and first aid programs to the service and manufacturing industries.

He progressed through a series of roles with increasing responsibility at Cintas, becoming an officer of the company in 1997. In 2003, he joined ECOLAB Corporation— a water, hygiene, and energy technologies business service provider—to serve as Vice President-Corporate Marketing and Vice President-International Marketing. He returned to Cintas in 2006 as Vice President-Marketing and Merchandising and in 2008 was named President and Chief Operations Officer-Global Accounts and Strategic Markets. He helped lead Cintas to record annual sales of $4 billion before joining Sysco in 2012.

P erry Lee Reese Jr. profoundly changed the lives of countless individuals, reshaping the culture of his Ohio community and leaving an enduring legacy for others to follow.

His moving story was told by Gary Smith in the March 5, 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated: “In the unlike-liest of places—Ohio’s Amish country—a high school basketball coach changed a community’s ideas about race and about life.” The story inspired readers around the world and continues to touch the hearts of new readers today. Designated by Sports Illustrated as one of its “60 best articles ever to appear,” the story was re-published on January 9, 2015 in conjunction with the magazine’s 60th anniversary celebration.

A native of Canton, Ohio, Mr. Reese graduated from Timken High School, entered the workforce, and began college as a part-time student at Kent State Universi-ty-Stark County campus before transferring to Muskingum in 1977. His studies were interrupt-ed for a time, but he returned to Muskingum to complete his degree and graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

In 1984, he was hired as an assistant basketball coach at Hiland High School in the town of Berlin, Ohio, amidst one of the country’s largest concentrations of Amish and Mennonite families. In this insular community, he was met with suspicion, distrust and incidents of prejudice. When the head coaching job unexpectedly became vacant, Mr. Reese was named to the top post. One of the most important positions in the town was now held by

an unmarried Catholic black man—the only black man in eastern Holmes County. The racial and religious prejudice that Mr. Reese encountered worsened.

He responded with dignity and with grace. Mr. Reese did his job well. He connected with his players and his students and he built a

winning team. He reached out personally to his greatest critics in town, one of whom would later say that “Most of the petty divisions around here disappeared because of Coach. He pulled us all together. … I came to realize that color’s not a big deal. I took him for my best friend.”

The President’s Medal honors those who have distinguished themselves by their exemplary

actions on behalf of others. Perry Lee Reese Jr. ’88 was awarded the medal posthumously at the

2015 Alumni Weekend Convocation.

In the words of Sports Illustrated writer Gary Smith: “Something had dawned on everyone in town … The black man’s values were virtually the same as theirs. Humility … unselfishness … reverence … family … work ethic. … He out-Amished the Amish, out-Mennonited the Menno-nites, and everyone, even those who’d never sniffed a locker in their lives, took to calling the black man Coach.”

Mr. Reese broke racial and religious barriers and brought people together through the force of his per-sonality and the example that he set. Those who knew

Mr. Reese describe him as a man who saw the best in everyone, created a culture of respect and teamwork among students and community members, challenged others to think broadly and outside of their own concerns, and had a unique ability to forge lasting friendships with those of all ages and backgrounds.

Equally important, as Mr. Smith wrote, Mr. Reese stood for “possibility, no matter how high the odds were stacked against you. … Coach’s voice was the one that kept saying, ‘… There’s so much more out there for you to see. Go places. Do things. Get a degree. Reach out. You have to take a chance.’ ”

At Hiland High School, Mr. Reese posted a 304-85 career coaching record, led the Hawks to their first state championship and advanced the team to three consecutive semi-final championships. He died of brain cancer at the age of 48 on November 22, 2000, leaving behind a community forever changed. His legacy endures in those who knew

him personally and in those who know of him through the words of Sports Illustrated writer Gary Smith. Muskingum University was very proud to honor Perry Reese during the 2015 Alumni Convocation.

“Perry Reese became an even

greater force of change in the world

when his story was told by Sports

Illustrated and touched millions

of readers around the globe.”

Every year, Muskingum recognizes three faculty members for their outstanding

contributions in teaching, scholarship and service. Here are the Distinguished Faculty

Award recipients for 2014-2015.

DISTINGUISHED

FACULTY AWARDS

Eugene L. Alesandrini, Associate Professor of Communication, William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching, for his commitment to his students’ success. “Professor Alesandrini is one of those natural-born teachers—the kind of person that cares about young people, wants them to succeed, and gives them the tools and the knowledge it takes to make them successful,” said Dr. James E. Callaghan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who presented the awards.

Professor Alesandrini joined the faculty in 1987. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Bradley University and his master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. The award for excellence in teaching is named in honor of an alumnus, class of 1878, whose career combined teaching, ministry and service. Thompson went on to become one of the most influential presidents of The Ohio State University.

Dr. Peter W. Gosnell, Associate Professor of Religion, William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Schol-arship, for his critically acclaimed new book, The Ethical Vision of the Bible: Learning Good from Knowing God. “Dr. Gosnell’s book is attracting the spotlight, and its warm glow is reflecting very well upon Muskingum University,” Dr. Callaghan said. “Dr. Gosnell’s book is not only the

result of the scholar in the library but also the teacher in the classroom, because he honed his material there.”

Dr. Gosnell joined the faculty in 2002. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, master of divinity and master of theology degrees from Western Seminary and his doctoral degree from the University of Sheffield. The award for excellence in scholarship is named in honor of William Rainey Harper, Muskingum class of 1870, recognized as one of America’s greatest education innovators. ATHLETIC HALL OF

FAME INDUCTEES

Professor Emeritus Dr. Steve KokovichSPECIAL CATEGORY, 1963

Steve has been an educator and advocate for athletics and student-athletes at Muskingum since 1976. For more than 25 years, he was the Muskingum faculty represen-tative for the NCAA and Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). He also has had a significant, enduring impact on academics. Steve established Muskingum’s first graduate degree program, the Master of Arts in Education. His work on behalf of students with dyslexia laid the founda-tion for today’s PLUS Program, which is considered one of the nation’s best in supporting students with learning disabilities. While a student-athlete at Muskingum, Steve

was a key member of back-to-back 7-2 football teams. He was a two-year starter and letterwinner at defensive end. Steve has a Bachelor of Arts in eco-nomics from Muskingum and Master of Education and Doctor of Philoso-phy degrees from Ohio University.

Richard “CC” RiderF O O T BA L L , 1 9 6 5

Richard was a First Team All-Ohio Conference football center for the Muskies from 1962-1964, when Muskingum’s conference record was 21-5. With Richard’s help, in 1962 the Muskies set the school record for most plays in a game, with 79 against Waynesburg.

In 1964 Richard helped power Muskingum to an 11-0 victory against NCAA Division I University of Akron. That same year, he started in the inaugural Grantland Rice Bowl, an NCAA bowl game in the College Division, for smaller universities and colleges. From 1964-1972, the Grantland Rice Bowl was one of four season-ending national quarterfinals whose results helped determine the College Division national champion, by poll. Richard has a Bachelor of Arts in sociology.

Four alumni—Professor Emeritus Dr. Steve Kokovich ’63, Richard “CC” Rider ’65, Kristen Vejsicky McLane ’01 and Cheryl Davies Ficco ’04

—are the 2014 inductees to the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame.

Kristen Vejsicky McLaneVOL L E Y BA L L , 2 0 0 1

Kristen’s outstanding accomplishments earned her a place among the top athletes in the nation and in Muskingum’s record books. Her on-court volleyball performance played

a key role in Musking-um’s string of successes in NCAA post-season play, including leading the Muskies to a third-place finish in the 1999 NCAA National Volleyball Tour-nament. Kristen contin-ues to hold Muskingum single-season records for assists per game (11.56)

and total assists (1,699), and ranks second in career assists (4,290) and third in career service aces (131). She helped lead the Muskies to both the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Regular Season and OAC Tournament champi-onships in 1998 and 1999. Kristen’s stellar play helped the Muskies capture consecutive NCAA regional champion-ships. She was a three-time All-OAC honoree (1998, 1999, 2000), a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree, was named to the All-Great Lakes Region team (1999, 2000) and earned Third Team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Ameri-can accolades (2000). In recognition of her achievements, Kristen received the Barbara Steiner Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award and the OAC Clyde Lamb Award for top student-athletes in the conference. She has a Bachelor of Science in chemistry.

Cheryl Davies FiccoWOM E N ’ S S O C C E R , 2 0 0 4

Cheryl was the first Muskingum women’s soccer player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American (First Team, 2003). A two-time All-OAC honoree (2002, 2003) and two-time captain, Cheryl was named All-Ohio (2003) and earned First Team Academic All-OAC and OAC Player of the Week accolades. She led Muskingum to its first OAC Tournament Final Four appearance in 2001

and ranks second at Muskingum in career points (68), career goals (26) and career assists (16). Cheryl also was a standout in track and field. She was a team co-captain for two years and a member of the 4 x 800 meter relay squad that holds the Muskingum school record. She capped

her career by earning the OAC Clyde Lamb Award, which honors the conference’s top student-athletes. Cheryl has a Bachelor of Arts in business.

Since 2004, Muskingum has made unprecedented investments in new academic programs, nine endowed faculty chairs, scholarships and facilities. With the completion of the library this year, Muskingum will have added more than 120,000 square feet in six new buildings, without long-term financing.

TOP-RANKED FOR FISCAL FITNESS

According to a national study, Muskingum ranks among the nation’s best for financial health, based on four key financial ratios. A score of 3.0 is considered the threshold for financial health, and 3.7 is the national median for private schools. With a score of 7.4, Muskingum is proud of its overall financial sustainability. In fact, among participating schools with similar-sized endowments, Muskingum ranks in the 97th percentile nationwide.Based on The Council of Independent College’s Composite Financial Index (CFI)

Setting the Stage for Even Greater ImpactOur financial strategy is driven by our determination to have a powerful, positive impact on the lives of our students and the entire Muskingum community. Through a combination of wise investments, prudent spending and donor support, we have been able to hold the line on tuition while making unprecedented capital investments. Furthermore, at a time when other institutions are struggling financially, Muskingum is virtually debt-free.

The results of this strategy are evident throughout the University, in new facilities, programs and opportunities. Equally important, our strategy has set the stage for continued success—and even greater impact.
