Abstract: Collection contains information on the Wyoming Division of the American Association

and its local branches, specifically on the organization’s goal to of develop opportunities for higher

education for women.

Scope and Content: This collection contains information on the local Wyoming branches,

including correspondence, reports, bulletins, scrapbooks, and yearbooks. Also within the collection

are the division’s constitution, by-laws, resolutions, correspondence, committee correspondence and

reports, minutes and publications made by AAUW, Foundation and secretary’s records,

audiocassette tapes. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by topic.

Organizational History: The national organization of American Association of University

Women began in 1882. Their aim was to develop opportunities for higher education for women

along with creation and maintenance of higher standards in those institutions.

Laramie and Sheridan in 1914 formed the earliest branches in Wyoming. No other branches were

added until the Casper branch in 1934, followed by Cheyenne and Rock Springs in 1935, Basin in

1936, and Lander in 1939. Rawlins and Lovell were the only branches added in 1940. During

1951, there was a rush of branches including Platte Valley, Powell, Cody and Riverton. The

Saratoga-Encampment branch began in 1952, while Worland followed in 1957, and finally

Kemmerer in 1960.

The Wyoming State division was organized in Laramie in 1938, and until that time the branches

operated individually. Dr. Helen C. White, AAUW national president, spoke in Casper on June 12

and in Laramie on June 13, 1943.

collection is open to the public. The researcher assumes full responsibility for observing all

copyright, property and libel laws as they apply.

Acquisition: The American Association of University Women, Wyoming Division donated their

records to the University of Wyoming Archives in 1949, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1999 and 2001.
