As a top research University with a self-directed curriculum, in a friendly

college town with a global impact, the University of Rochester guides students

from the widest possible sense of freedom to an individualized, assured sense

of focus. By the time they graduate, students have learned how to pursue what

they love and serve as driving forces for innovation. The University graduates

students, networked together, each with maximum courage and confidence to

find the top of their own field after college.

THE UNIVERSIT Y OF ROCHESTER

Imagine a university that nurtures each student’s growth in his or her own preferred way.

The University of Rochester Medical Center includes several world-class

teaching hospitals and hosts millions of dollars in sponsored annual projects.

Students in the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering, the Laboratory

for Laser Energetics, and the other professional schools develop problem-

solving skills, gain useful academic and career experience, and make significant

contributions to their communities. Beyond the City of Rochester, University

students conduct research in Japan, Italy, Malawi, Antarctica, and many other

locations around the state, the country, and the world.

RESEARCH

As one of the nation’s top-tier research universities, the University of Rochester is an ideal place for

undergraduate research.

Rochester’s academics are unlike most at other schools because of the extraordinary

opportunities to conduct undergraduate research, to streamline your track to a

graduate program, and to have untraditional combinations of majors and minors.

The seven schools that comprise the University of Rochester include one of the

country’s best nursing schools, a competitive business school, a distinguished

medical center, a top engineering school, an innovative school of education, and

one of the world’s premier creative forces in music. Across these schools, students

utilize state-of-the-art technology and facilities to support their unique and self-

driven education.

ACADEMICS

With Rochester’s open curriculum, students explore their curiosity and passions to create a personalized course of study.

Not only have they earned impressive academic credentials, but they also

represent every US state and territory and more than 100 countries. Students in

every academic discipline earn internships, run enterprises and philanthropic

events, study abroad, and pursue graduate study after Rochester. Each student

creates a personal blend of activities by choosing among hundreds of student-

run organizations, 23 NCAA Division III sports, and nightly campus events.

Most of the 5,000 undergraduates live on campus all four years, and more than

90% are leaders in at least one field or group, making life on campus exciting

and close-knit.

STUDENTS

Students at the University are diverse, curious, and driven.

Just like their students, professors come to the River Campus from across

the US and around the world. Rochester’s professors are committed to their

students as partners in their lifelong scholarship and research, in a ratio of

1:10. Many students “major in a professor,” taking several courses and joining

projects with committed, passionate, and renowned scholars who don’t separate

research from teaching.

FACULT Y

At the University, there are more than two thousand leading, prize-winning faculty and instructional staff.

Within 10 minutes’ walk, you find ten dining locations, residence halls for

more than 80% of undergraduates, a winding river, an interfaith chapel,

performance halls, the doors to the enormous medical center, a full athletic

center, and the stately Rush Rhees Library dome rising above a world-class

arboretum. Rochester’s campus inspires work, play, and photographers year-

round, through warm falls, white winters, and blossoming springs.

CAMPUS LIFE

The ‘River Campus’ is the intimate and lively student college home within the multi-campus University.

Rochester has grown since 1840 as a corporate, tech, and college town whose

warm and diverse residents are never bored. The city’s hotspots include a fine art

museum, Kodak Hall, three professional sports venues, the National Museum

of Play, and the George Eastman House, a photography museum that attracts

scholars from all over the world. Rochester fostered the motion picture film

industry, abolition, and the women’s rights movement. Rochester’s economy is

dynamic with thousands of specialized, profitable firms in fields like optics and

health equipment and technology. Residents have easy access to Lake Ontario

beaches, Erie Canal recreation, and a vast greenbelt of gardens, parks, and

summer festivals.

CIT Y OF ROCHESTER

Straddling the swift Genesee River and its six waterfalls, the City of Rochester is an urban setting with an easy suburban feel.

The University doesn’t merely teach skills; it teaches you how to teach yourself.

This University doesn’t look back at what’s been done; it looks forward to

what’s next. In fact, the Rochester motto is “Meliora,” Latin for “ever better.”

Rochester’s legacy of innovation ensures that students graduate not just as

specialists, but as forward thinkers and leaders in their field. Rochester’s future

is with its students, and your future could be with Rochester.

MELIORA

The University of Rochester is for students who are courageous enough to create their own education.
