In Memoriam: Jerry Zambanini and Susan Niemi

We are sad to announce the loss of two cherished department alumni this past Spring.

Gerald T. Zambanini died on March 30, 2018. Jerry worked his entire 45-year career at UPMC McKeesport and was the last working CRNA at McKeesport to “drop ether.” He also was the first male CRNA to graduate from the McKeesport School of Anesthesia. A mentor to many SRNAs throughout the years, Jerry had just retired a short 18 months before his passing. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jerry’s family and

friends, he will be missed by many who had the pleasure to work alongside him. More info is available at Jerry’s obituary page on the Greensburg Tribune Review website.

Susan B. Niemi, former Chief Nurse Anesthetist at UPMC Shadyside, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at age 75. Born on October 9, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Harold and Jean (MacAninch) Baker, Susan graduated from Mount Lebanon High School, University of Pittsburgh, West Penn Nursing School, and Citizens Hospital of New Kensington Anesthetist Program. She worked in the medical field her whole life and later relocated to Palm Coast Florida. Susan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh,

PA, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and the Northern Right Whale Watching Group in Marineland, FL. She enjoyed swimming, traveling, mahjong, and walking with her group of dog walkers. Susan is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Eric R. Niemi of Palm Coast, FL; sister, Barbara Baker Price and her husband, David of Cold Springs, FL; and many good friends. She is preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Carl Niemi. Susan’s dedication and contributions as CRNA Director at UPMC Shadyside will not be forgotten. Her warm personality and genuine love of people will be deeply missed. More info is available on Sue’s obituary pages on Legacy.com and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Dr. Peter Safar Honored as “Pitt Physician-Researcher Who Changed the World”

Our founding chair Dr. Peter Safar was honored as one of only five University of Pittsburgh faculty members featured in an interactive display on the 5th floor of Scaife Hall, the home of Pitt’s School of Medicine. The new installation, one of many

exciting enhancements made as part of Scaife Hall’s ongoing renovations, includes a large overhead display screen that scrolls through photos and information about each of the five honored scientists’ greatest accomplishments. It also includes walk-up kiosks with interactive touch-screen monitors where people can learn more about each scientist’s monumental contributions to medicine. The display broadcasts Dr. Safar’s many career highlights, which include pioneering CPR, establishing one of the first multidisciplinary ICUs in the US, organizing emergency response units and establishing national emergency guidelines and standards, and founding the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research.
