VIII. Student RemarksAaron Anderson, Senior, English major – I’d like to talk about why I’m seeking an appointment and a violation I recently had. It’s because of falsification of information on the election candidacy application. I had said that I attended a full B&A meeting and I had the committee chair sign the application saying he agreed. I actually attended only 45 minutes. I also talked about Osprey Voice for those of you who remember. Then I attended the University Affairs committee for which I

Page 2: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

loaned a laptop. I then organized and lead the entire SAC meeting that day. I was unaware of the fact that I could have the SAC vice chair sign the application saying I attended the full meeting on the application. Also, I could have had the UAC chair sign saying I fully attended the full meeting. This would then completely fulfill my application. When I was made aware, the vice chair had left. I should have obviously had the vice chair sign the E&A application and had the UAC sign, because I did attend 2 full meetings that day. I should have at the least appealed saying I should not have been able to attend. I did not do either and that’s obviously a mistake. I learned from that mistake. I not need to only have the intent of law in mind but also the letter of the law. I need to apply that letter to the law. In the future I will be more diligent of the letter of the law and the application of it. The work I’ve been able to do is what drives me to think I can continue to be beneficial to Student Government. That’s why I’m seeking appointment. This drive and feedback I’ve had from students on ideas I’ve been moving forward with, it makes me think I can move forward and be beneficial to Student Government. I encourage you who have any questions or thoughts to power to move forward to you or other students to please attend the E&A appointment. There will be a Q&A period so you can question or voice your thoughts. I encourage any of you who’d like to talk to me privately about this as well. Thank you for your time.

IX. Guest Speakersa. Josh Baker & Coach Driskell

Josh Baker – Thank you for having us, I appreciate it. I’m going to talk on the back end of Coach Driskell. I work in the athletic department for marketing and development. I control most of our social media and the number of on-campus things; working with students in terms of communicating with those students. I wanted to introduce our headman’s basketball coach.

Coach Driskell – First of all, I commend you not just for your honesty but also for explaining what went on and what happened and what transpired; I think the more that can do that, that can share that, especially amongst their peers; it’s an amazing feeling of, probably a lot of people in this room have done something similar, this happens all the time. The former head coach here could have been the head coach at Georgia Tech had there not been something wrong on his resume. I commend you for doing that. I always learn something new when I come to this thing. It’s amazing how you guys do this. This is way beyond, me. Not that I’m not intelligent, but it’s crazy, all of the rules and numbers and the objection and rebuttal. I really appreciate being here. Let me tell you this: I’m only going to keep coming to these things as long as I have a job. And the only way I’m going to keep that job, is if we win. In my business you get hired & fired by losing. That’s the way it works; and that’s life. All the non-reality you sometimes live in is part of being young. The reality is when you get out in the real world that’s when the rubble meets the road. I’m only going to keep coming back. Here’s where we are right now. When we took the job 4 years ago, I knew everything about the students. I wasn’t wrong. Compare us to anybody. We’ve got a great institution with a great leader and a great product because I think our academia is off the charts; whether it matters to you or not. Every FSU grad in America is happy to be alive but 2 years ago they were ready to jump off the bridge when Bobby left. It’s amazing how athletics is the front door to your school. We had 1 player kill another. So that’s what we walked into and they said clean it up and we said okay. That was back then, so where is it now? It’s easy to come to Texas when Texas is playing against Baylor. Not a lot of people are coming to play. That was the biggest thing that burnt me the most. The front runners only come to those games. Next thing you know we had our first sell-out game in our history of basketball. We want you to

Page 3: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

come because it’s our school, because it’s our guys, because it’s UNF. Anybody can come to JU; coming to a JU game is an awesome setting that’s our dream, I know what it takes I know what you need to do. What about FGCU why can’t we be like them? They lost to 9th place teams twice last year. Sometimes they strike you at the right time. We’re at that stage right now with our school. However right now the one thing that we have to do is become more entrenched in us, more about what we do. Now we have 11 games on TV on ESPN3 which the games are on. People are starting to find out more and more about us. That’s how it works. Athletics drives degrees. It drives research money, it drives professors. Athletics is that exposure because everybody cares about it. Fantasy football has the lowest rating in the history of the NFL. Everybody wants to watch athletics. When BCU goes to the final 4, their bookstore goes from $53,000 to $1.4 million. Money goes into wherever that fund goes to. There’s a great worth to where we’re at. I understand what I got to do. In 2009 when I left Baylor and came here, this was my school. I am UNF to the core. Whatever we can do for the good of us I’ll do it. UNF to me is what my life is all about. For the rest of your life this is what your life is going to be about. U Never Finish – I hate that. What about Urgency Never Fails? In 1972 when we started, urgency never fails. You know what else started in ‘72? Nike. Same with us. President Delaney is off the charts and you guys are our leaders and we got to go to another level. There’s only one way to do it, right here. If you truly believe like you’re truly here for that reason – no one like you, no place like this. I truly believe that and I don’t have a degree here. We need you all the time. And we don’t need you because its dollar beers and free t-shirts. But we need you, and we need you badly. As long as I’m here I’m going to come to you every hearing. And I really respect you but we need you. I appreciate y’all. Have a great weekend. God bless everyone. I just got done speaking down the hallway to children from the homeless shelter. If you don’t serve, you’re really hurting yourself. Thank you.

Josh Baker – If you’ve never heard him talk, he’s pretty intense. He gets you really fired up. Hopefully you’re meeting will be a little more intense now. He touched on reality. He said to me last year – going to a UNF basketball game for our students; it’s sacrilegious not to go. It should be the first thought that all our students do: go to the basketball games. Don’t wait for the specials; it should be the opportunity to go and to be united with all of you as Ospreys. I sat in this room as a student as a senator: I represented 16,000 students and I heard it all the time and I didn’t’ understand it. I was sick of it. I saw how naive I had it as a UNF undergrad student. It’s about the big picture. If we can do something for you we’re going to do it. We’re going to make that experience the best it can be. Making sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game, it’s you guys’ job to spread the word. You’ve been charged with representing the students to the best of your ability. We haven’t brought somebody that big in a while. It should be a 5,000 people show if you guys do your jobs. It’s going to be spectacular. It’s not about 1 concert or 1 basketball game; it’s making sure the students stay at UNF get what they want. We offer them a lot of stuff they should embrace. We’re 10 days away from basketball and we open with Florida in Gainesville. It’s easy to go to a JU game and watch against UF. We need every single one of you guys to bring everyone you know to every single basketball game. Nov 16 – we’re honoring military that night. It’s the first basketball game; we’ve met with Mayport and everybody. We’re trying to do it the right way. Nov 21st is the next home game and it’s rotary nights. There will be 30 rotary clubs from the Jacksonville area. We’re trying to do it not just for you guys but for your community. The better the atmosphere is the better is your game. I’m passionate. Coach Driskell is passionate. Hopefully you guys have been attentive. We appreciate it.

b. Tom Van SchoorI know some of you; I don’t know some of you. I’m the dean of students at UNF. I want to talk about one thing in particular today: it’s SOS. I did put together a PowerPoint. Let me give a little history: about 5 years ago after the shootings at Virginia Tech every university in the country said we can’t let that happen here. We had a committee on this campus involving many faculty and staff and even Terry Dinutzo, who was the former director of the counseling center. And we asked what can we do here to never let that happen? We can develop a model for the program, a behavioral intervention team. Most universities set as their goal to make sure there’s no violence on campus – our goals is to make sure students are having a positive experience to graduate. Ours is set lower. The purpose is to intervene in situations where we think students may be getting into a crisis situation involving behaviors of concern. You have this uneasy feeling in your gut. If it doesn’t feel right and you feel something is wrong; those are things we want you to report. We’re here to help the student be retained in school until graduation with the appropriate supports until you get there. No it doesn’t happen every time. Sometimes they need to take time off from school. If somebody is depressed or needs to take time off for an eating disorder, without penalty, what we’re trying to do is try to make them not disrupt the university’s but also their own lives, both academically and personally. One of things that happened last year at UCF was actually a non-student who managed to be living in a resident hall and he was amassing weapons. The roommate basically turned him in but before anything happened he committed suicide. That was a wakeup call for us. I, the former chief dean, and Terry Dinutzo have meet with every faculty on campus, but we haven’t done much training for students. You need to be aware of this program too so if we ever have a situation then you know what to do as well. It’s one of my efforts this year to do that. And to also reach out to adjunct faculty. It’s important they know what to do. One of the things I did was list the number of resources on the backside of this bookmark. Being aware of those resources of support is a big resource of this as well. It’s been a great resource for this as well. The CC, DRC, LGBTRC, and MVRC – all offer support for our students. Sometimes this person is exhibiting odd behaviors to students. I don’t need you or want you to be an armchair psychologist or behavioral intervention expert. You know when someone is acting strange or acting out of sorts. I’ve worked with a variety of students in a variety of situations. If you do see something that’s upsetting to you please let me know; a little over 3 times a week: about 24 are nothing and some are reasonable responses to stressors in students’ life. You saw where one of our students was impersonating an FBI agent and cyber stalking a faculty member. That was one that took a long time as it was not simple, it was pretty complex. We did have to intervene for the wellness of the student. One of the things that are great is that, I do have a Facebook and a twitter but I can’t look at Facebook accounts every day. Tumblr seems darker but even last week someone sent me a bunch of posts off twitter of meeting with the students and intervening with her. And really she was a victim of domestic abuse and that’s what was coming forward. If someone is hurting themselves or talking about how they’re in the hospital from getting beat up. You can call me up; let me tell you something, I’m really frugal especially when it’s not my money. I’m cheap. I got these printed up last June and I got 10,000 for $150; this summer I got the title change and moved to a different office. Everything on this is correct except I am not the ombudsman; I am the dean of students. My ext. is 1577. You can call, email me, you can call UPD and you can go down to Student Affairs and there’s even an anonymous report. I prefer a conversation. If it’s

Page 5: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

something that’s so explicit and it can only come from you, I will respect and keep your anonymity. If I’m going to let the person know who you are I’m going to tell you first and only if there’s no other way of doing it. 99.75% of the time is confidential. Talking in person is better for the situation. It’s better to hear directly rather than indirectly. With the student that you report 9/10 times we’ll provide you with the resources you need to support them. Everyone and then because of conduct issue or mental or physical health issue we’ll help with the student show need to leave. The sooner the better. When they’re talking about how they’re feeling, the sooner the better, the sooner we intervene the more time we have to work with that individual. If you think someone is in immediate danger, don’t call me at all. Call UPD. If you really think they’re in immediate danger or an immediate threat to anything. I know I blew through it really quickly. Thank you.

c. Dr. Sam KimbellI am the Dean of Arts & Science and have been at UNF since 1988; my entire career after graduating from UF, my wife and I came from the university affairs committee. I’m going to talk to you briefly about the general education proposal. We’ll be putting it to faculty proposal on November 7th. Our proposal is a response to all of those recommendations. When I learned that your university affairs committee was suggesting a letter of support I was absolutely thrilled. Support from this body would be a significant endorsement. Our part is quite simple: change the focus of the current curriculum, which is based on course curriculum. Why did we want to change the focus from course specific to competency focused is to make the general education courses pertinent to study in the major. When we talked to students, those students saw connection between general education and upper level programs of study; deeper reason is to rediscover knowing oneself. In my presentation to the university affairs committee, I went through a brief history of western education. The point was to demonstrate the content of western civilization is that the constant has been remained concern for competency. We get outside ourselves. As I mentioned the brief history of western education has changed, often dramatically. We emphasize generalized learning skills rather than course specific content. Our focus is on demonstrating from one course to another what is constant concern with basic intellectual capabilities. The proposal focuses on the same intellectual competencies. Another programmatic benefit: I want to make UNF’s general education program cutting edge in the state. Which I think is inevitable nationwideWe directly responded to what our market gets involved in and the people we hire. Employers do not need someone with a BS or a BA. The best index is what’s available. UNF offers regular transcripts which is limited to courses and grades. We see supplementary and complementary transcripts that are the focus of the new general education proposal. If you’re willing to offer and support the bill that was introduced today you would have the gratitude of myself, the dean, and the general education council. So far all academic units on campus are in favor of the proposal.

d. Jerry HollandI’m the Duval county supervisor of elections and I am here to express the importance of voting. You have to ask the questions of why vote: why people don’t vote, why people do vote. We had about 78 counties visit our elections center. Why don’t people come out and vote? First and foremost is the credibility of the elections. It’s not a problem here, but a problem throughout the world. Did the person with the most votes really win? It does face some elections officials here. It really comes down to turnout and why people don’t vote for the candidates. If I

Page 6: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

have all voting sites & precincts I need; if everything is there and is easy to understand; if the workers are well-trained and tell you how to go through the process; it still all comes mostly down to the candidates. You have to say: do you have qualified candidates. If you want to know what gets the voters in Duval off the couches is between the candidates; one of them makes a difference. Getting involved, especially if you see things that you want to make different: we see things that we want to make different. First and foremost I always challenge people to look to the future for running for a position. Whether it’s here in SG or the next step in state government. All of them will make a difference in what you’re going to do whether it’s how much taxes you’re going to pay, whether there are benefits or entitlements you’re going to pay. When you don’t vote you’re just giving that choice to someone else. The excitement of elections is obviously getting people involved. Make sure candidates are out there getting involved in their message. Go out there and encourage people to participate. I thank you. Our next elections will be next August, the primary, and the general elections in November which will decide if the current Gov. stays or a new one comes in. No matter which one’s in front of you, take advantage of it, take your time, and express your vote.

X. Judicial Branch Reporta. Chief Justice – Alex Goetz ([email protected]) (5-minutes)

Over the past few weeks we have been quite busy in the Judicial Branch. We’re still waiting on 2 more justices to join. Hopefully that’ll be coming to you next senate. We had 2 disqualification appeals: one by Spencer Harold, who submitted it late. The decision was denied to 2-0 and denied by primary court. The second is Christina Laster and she was 1 signature short and, after being approved, was then re-appealed, then denied by the Supreme Court; both were disqualified. However both seemed extremely enthusiastic about being involved. We had 4 elections violations filed. Two by Fransua Estrada and 2 by Carlo Fassi. First was Fransua Estrada’s filing on Aaron Anderson; in this case, the case information was that falsified information was presented at the election; the case outcome was there was a guilty plea in this case so primary court did accept the plea and withdrew from the election. He then stepped down himself. The second The second, was filed on Justin Turner, but rescinded by Mr. Fassi after the candidate withdrew from the elections. The third was filed by Fransua Estrada against the Red Party; one candidate did something against code so the whole party would be filed for it. Fransua Estrada did not show up to the hearing and therefore the red party was restrained from exercising their full rights. This case was then dropped. Carlo Fassi on Aaron Anderson’s case was also dropped after the candidate withdrew himself from elections. On top of that we have been very active with parking over the past 3 weeks; we’ve done close to 5 written appeals. The Parking Advisory Council has recommended several changes to the lots with the idea of taking away some premium spots on the outside of campus. We want to make sure those passes are well rationed.

XIV. Executive Agency Reports: (3-minutes each)a. Osprey Productions – John Chwalisz [email protected]

Good afternoon. I will keep my report short for you guys. I come with visual aids. Our amazing Graphic Designer made this for our show next week. If you haven’t heard: Lupe Fiasco is our mainstage concert with Manchester Orchestra. It’s going to be a great show. Everyone in this room gets in for free. Tickets are only $15. Come on out, and tell your friends to come. We’ve done the best we can and we’ve

Page 7: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

planned this event since June. Please come out; it’ll be a great show, it’s next Friday November 1st, at 7pm.The week following the concert, we have a movie night. It’s a Disney double feature with Mulan at 7pm and Toy Story at 9:45pm. Come on out; Mulan will make a man out of you and Toy Story will make a friend in you. We will have hidden Mickeys throughout campus. If you want to flyer for this event, I’ll make sure you guys can get some and I’ll help you flyer. We’re going to have a lot of fun.

b. Club Alliance – Brett Weisman [email protected] We’ve had a lot of club alliance stuff. Club Fest in my opinion couldn’t be any more successful. I want to say thank you to all the senators who came out to help; please stand up real quick. I want say we thought it was extremely successful and you guys were a huge part of that. We just had a meeting right before this and I ran here just after. We had all clubs break down into specialized boards and each board talked for about 30 minutes each and it was really cool to see it.

XI. Executive Branch Reportsa. Attorney General – Paige Lehman [email protected] (3-minutes)

Good Afternoon Senators. Accountability, Public Service, Responsibility and Democracy; these aren’t just words; this is how you as elected officers and representatives should act and uphold. As Margaret Chase Smith once said, “Public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the people and to the nation”.Let me ask you, how many students do you represent? The answer is 16,252. Every time you sit in this room, you attend a Student Government event, or you put on that senator polo; remember that you are acting on behalf of those 16,252 students. You are their voice, you are their leader and you are their servant. That’s right, we are all servants in this room, we serve at the pleasure of the public, of the students. If you wish to hold this position, your service must be a complete dedication to the students on this campus. This is what you make it. We are unique in a state that is already unique. Student Government is recognized in our state constitution; which is not the case for a majority of states. We are also unique compared to the other universities within the state of Florida in that we have an amazing relationship with our administration and the freedom to be creative, new, and autonomous in some our decisions. There are universities that dream for that opportunity. I went to a conference this past summer and met with student body Presidents from all over the country. There were many schools older and bigger than ours but had budgets of a mere couple thousand dollars not 4.5 million. Not to mention, they had pro-staff decide what to allocate and how much. These SG’s competed against clubs instead of allocating it themselves. We are extremely lucky. We have these freedoms because the students who came before you, who sat in the very same chairs you sit today; fought hard for a recognized SG, fought hard to be autonomous, and fought hard with administration to gain the respect of the university and students to achieve the ability these powers and autonomy. I take that back, these aren’t powers we possess; these are responsibilities. Those who came before you left a legacy that allows you to make decisions on a $4.5 million budget, allows you to have such a heavy influence on this campus and allows you to sit in a beautiful room in comfy seats. We used to meet in a small classroom with old chairs stuffed up against the wall not in one of, if not the best, Senate Chambers in the State of Florida. It is your responsibility to uphold that legacy, to ensure that those who come after us still have the respect of the administration and students and the ability to make autonomous decisions. I want everyone who has sponsored a bill to please raise their hands? If you have a copy of the constitution and statutes in front of you, please raise them in the air. Every single individual in this room should have raised their hands and held their constitution in the air. It is your responsibility to be educated, to ask questions, be informed of the issues, and come to senate prepared from reading the bills emailed to you. I would like to leave you with a quote from Thomas Paine.A body of men holding themselves accountable to nobody ought not to be trusted by anybody. So I ask you, when you leave Senate, what kind of legacy will you leave?

b. Treasurer – Joe Turner [email protected] (3-minutes)Good afternoon everyone. I’d like to start my report by echoing the sentiments of Attorney General Madame Lehman. We have a wonderful opportunity to make this a better place. We hold that opportunity to engage the university and really make

Page 8: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

positive changes and make it a better place. When you talk to administrators they listen. I’d like to challenge you over the next 2 weeks to go out and have a 10 minute conversation with a student. Stand in student remarks and talk about what you discussed. I challenge each one of you to do your job. Onto my information. The minimum wage is increasing by $0.14 an hour and will be accounting in to the budget: $7.93 next from $7.79. Something I’ve been working on is Pita Pit. I was chosen by Carlo to head that up. Construction has been halted momentarily on the kitchen area of the club house to allow the committee and university to get cost estimates and prepare proposals. Hopefully by next meeting I’ll have those numbers to you. Last thing today is to thank Brett for the wonderful job he’s doing with club alliance. Club break outs went very well today. I was personally able to engage with a large number of students; to give them and tell them to better their clubs.

Sen. Waychoff – when does the new minimum wage come into effect?

Treasurer Turner – January.

c. Vice President – Billy Namen [email protected] (3 minutes) None. Yields time to President Fassi.

d. President – Carlo Fassi [email protected] (5-minutes)I would also like to echo what Attorney General Lehman said. I would like to challenge the complacency. You all legislate in this room. You only have a year to pass so many documents you can forward to university admin, to local Jacksonville representatives, to the state of Florida representatives and the state of house representatives. You’re not going to have this opportunity to do it again, unless you get reelected. Who says you deserve to be reelected if you watched others pass bills. This upcoming Wednesday the Florida Student Association is passing legislation lobbying on behalf of students. They’ll be passing dates for the Rally in Tally event. During the session we go in full force as representatives that we hope the legislature will pass. We’re working an AIM Higher press conference to have all universities and SG presidents there. This Wednesday during a conference call we’ll be talking about some other projects. I’ll be meeting with the president to stress some issues in regards to Greek housing and recognizing how important that project will be for this campus. Administrators needs to get back to Greek organizations to what the overall costs will be and how to shift them so fraternities and sororities can be capable to committing what university is doing. Namen is working on proposals: outdoor amphitheater. The chief justice touched on violations filed: my main goal as Student Body President is that we have transparent and fair elections. After filing the 2 violations I did on candidates Aaron Anderson and Justin Turner, I also filed that my Attorney General begin investigating then Sen. Estrada’s actions with what occurred. The falsification of documents occurred. Since then, Sen. Estrada has resigned. It’s the right of senate to know why. Besides that we have myself and the Student Government Lobbyists should be in Tallahassee next week to review some of the priorities of government.

XII. Legislative Cabinet Reportsa. Constitution and Statutes Committee – Chairwoman Kaitlin Ramirez

([email protected])Yesterday we had a noncompliance hearing scheduled. As President Fassi said, Sen. Estrada resigned thus cancelling the meetings. CR-13F-2700 will be on the

Page 9: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

ballot. Please educate yourself on the CR so you’re well-versed on it. I’d also like to go along with today’s theme which seems to be doing more and do it to the best of your ability. Make sure you do your part. We are revamping the senator orientation. How many remember you’re orientation? 3. How may remember sitting down and didn’t really know what was going on? We want to make it more comprehensive. Right this down: November 9. It is a Saturday. We have building 2 booked from 9am-5pm and I will be emailing you all from times to be meeting. There will be refreshments and lunch will be provided. You will be trained on everything that a committee does what each branch does and you will know Roberts Rules. The day following our next senate meetings: I hope to see as many of you there as possible. For those of you running in the fall elections, this is mandatory. This is great for fulfilling the requirements of your scholarship.

Sen. Turner – Just for clarification, even if you’re already a senator and you’re running in the election you would still have to attend?

Senate President Brady – Every time you begin a new term you have to attend.

Sen. Caudio – Will this be all day?

Sen. Ramirez- Yes but not necessarily 9-5; more so 10-4.

b. Budget and Allocations Committee – Chairman Chris Brady ([email protected])I’m filling in until we elect a new one today. We had 3 travel requests come up at the last meeting. I don’t have the total for you right now but it’s approximately $7-8,000.

Sen. Caudio About how much is left in travel requests?

Sen. President Brady – About $8,000.

c. Elections and Appointments Committee – Chairwoman Emily Antworth ([email protected]) Elections are next week. We have a CR so there is an election. It’s the 29th and 30th. Polls will be open from 9-7 in the student union; we are just having 1 location. Those who have signed up have to work 4 hours. A lot of you have signed up but there are 4 slots under each hour so please try and sign up for those ones. There is a poll workers meeting right after senate so please stay. I hope to see you guys all out there this week.

Sen. Ramirez – You all have to work 4 hours or it’s 3 absence points per hour that you miss.

Sen. Caudio – Why do we only have one poll?

Sen. Antworth – Mostly due to justification for those who have signed up for polls.

Senate President Brady – Traditionally when there’s not enough people and there’s just a CR we just do one poll.

d. Student Advocacy Committee – Chairman Aaron Anderson ([email protected])What we’re working on in the SAC committee is we’ve moved forward with creating a list of all student activities on campus. We will be emailing them to help establish another line of communication with student government and these

activities. Our SAC members are volunteering to go to these events as active listeners to present whatever facts we know and to answer any questions. Another thing we’ve discussed is the roundtable which will happen within a week of the elections with the parking being the main topic for that. We’re looking at having Pita Pit for the stand being on the green. I’m still tabbing the Osprey Voice results. Thank you for your due diligence. It was much better than the last Osprey Voice. We had quite a bit of positive response to the questions.

e. University Affairs Committee – Chairman Justin Turner ([email protected])Working on filing the next month report for all university wide committees. As far as legislation goes we have that JR.

f. Senate President Christopher Brady ([email protected])Touching on new senator orientation. Sen. Ramirez has been working very very very hard; I can’t tell you how many hours she’s put into this; it’s incredible how much she’s worked to make sure you’re all trained. If you were elected in the spring, to get your scholarship you’re required to attend all workshops and get it signed off I recommend you go through them now and get them signed off to utilize the next semester. If you were a fall seat these were put on after you were elected. Fall seats have no scholarship requirements. Spring seats, you guys are required to attend all different workshops and sponsor a bill or resolution. For new senators who are getting sworn in, they will be required all that in addition to the required volunteer hours. You noticed there’s been a theme going on about personal responsibility. Sen. Estrada is no longer serving as B&A chair. He was removed due to an inability to perform his job to the best of his ability. This was the best move to this branch. Two different candidates who are part of the cabinet had violations from the cabinet. That is why we are now doing elections for 3 committee chairs. Both Sen. Turner and Sen. Anderson will be losing their positions but it is your position. It is your personal responsibility whether you want them still in senate. I think everybody makes mistakes; we learn from those mistakes. We will be doing nominations for other chairs. The legislative cabinet will look a bit different 2 weeks from now.

XIII. Budget & Allocations Chair ElectionsNominations:Sen. Turner to nominate Sen. Waychoff. Second. Accept. Motion from Sen. Turner to close the floor for nominations. Second. No objections. Moved. Sen. Waychoff is elected new B&A Chair.Sen. Waychoff – Thank you to all of the senators. I guess I just want to go into my speech that I prepared. It actually goes along with what some of the executive members have put together tonight. It’s about going the extra mile. I will push for my members to go that extra mile. A few months ago, I sponsored a request for the Society of Motor Engineers of Osprey Racing and learned firsthand what the club was about and I saw the racecar they were building. In that meeting I went over their presentation and what they needed to know and expect. I made the process as easy as I could for them. I learned so much more about people in the club and the need they had for additional funds and the hard work done that far. There was no way for me to learn all that by just going right before B&A committee and flipping through the proposal. There was no way to learn all that if I did not have that meeting with them. It is the duty of the sponsor before going before the committee to do that. I really appreciate becoming your new B&A chair. Thank you.

i. JR-13F-2726Sen. Turner – When I first heard the proposal it was greatly articulated. If he can teach as well as he speaks, this guy is phenomenal. This is our support to a competency curriculum. This is going to re-categorize a lot of general education curriculum now. A lot of students weren’t’ really thinking like this. This is being done across all European universities. It’s a newer idea so there isn’t a whole lot of long term data in support of this. I feel it’s a great precedent to have this in our state,.

Sen. Waychoff – How does this change the grading scale?

Sen. Turner – This will not have any impact on the grading scale. They are looking into having this idea of a second transcript. There would be an original that shows the course and grade. But then also an additional transcript to expound upon that. It would show you got an A in the class but it would show you’re incompetent. Some other reasons why someone wasn’t able to get an A but they were still completely competent in it.

Sen. Wolfe – Can you share practically what it’s going to look like, like the changes, emphasizing like if we have to take the same classes?

Sen. Turner – I don’t believe it will make a difference, since it is the first year. There won’t be too many changes. We want to start making

Page 12: University of North Florida Student Senate - unf.edu1).do…  · Web viewMaking sure everyone comes to Lupe Fiasco. Whether it’s for Club Alliance Club Fest or a basketball game,

steps towards changes like adding a new rubric towards grading systems to add competency to outline. I didn’t print out the PowerPoint. If you’d like a copy I can email that out so they can understand exactly what the changes are. The first year won’t be too drastic a change.

Sen. President Brady – Would it be appropriate to send it to the general education council since they’re handling the claim?

Sen. Turner – By all means.

President Fassi – I recommend forwarding it to the provost and president and BOT and just, FYI I will sign this as soon as possible.

Motion form Sen. Anderson to approve JR13F- 2726 as amended. Second. No objections. No discussion. Roll call vote. Passes 29-0-1.
