Chapter activities
1. Organization of international student conference
One of the main chapter activities was the organization of 8th
International Young Scientist
conference “Developments in Optics and Communications 2012” (DOC 2012) during April 12 –
14, 2012 in Riga, Latvia. More than 60 participants from 2 countries participated. The book of
abstracts can be found here http://docriga.lv/doc/history .
Student chapter meeting between Latvian and Lithuanian SPIE student chapters was organized
during DOC2012, increasing the collaboration between both chapters. Two chapter members of
Vilnius University Chapter – Vytenis Pranculis and Domantas Peckus – attended the conference
and the meeting.
During the conference, a Welcome party was organized. During the Welcome party, KHET Laser
game and table football were organized.
2. Organization of School for Young Physicists of Latvia
Several chapter members participated in organizing the School for Young Physicists of Latvia.
Once a month during the whole school year, school children from all over Latvia can come to Riga
and learn about different fields of physics by interesting lectures and laboratory work, including the
fields of optics.
3. “Science Night 2012”
On September 28, 2012, several members at different scientific institutes in Latvia participated in
the “Science Night 2012”, presenting interesting experiments to the public. This year’s theme was
energy.
4. SPIE Leadership meeting at “SPIE Optics & Photonics 2012”
Inga Saknite received the Officer Travel grant and participated in the SPIE Leadership meeting at
“SPIE Optics & Photonics 2012”. She made new collaborations with other chapter officers,
presented University of Latvia SPIE student chapter poster at Chapter Poster Session, as well as
participated in the Optics Outreach Olympics. She also did an oral presentation at the conference on
her Master thesis research.
5. 62nd
Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau
President of the chapter Dainis Jakovels participated at the 62nd
Meeting of Nobel Laureates in
Lindau, Germany, which is a yearly event where only a selected amount of students and young
researchers are invited to meet and listen to presentations of 25 Nobel Laureates, as well as make
new collaborations and get new ideas for their research. This year’s topic was Physics.
6. Summer school in Portugal
Ieva Timrote participated in the 1st International Summer School on Advances in Ophthalmic
Optics and Optometry in Aveiro, Portugal, which was organized during September 14-16, 2012.
7. Prof. Francesco Pavone visit to Latvia
During December 5-7, professor Francesco Pavone of European Laboratory for Non-Linear
Spectroscopy in Florence, Italy, visited Latvia to give two presentations on his research on neural
optical imaging. His visit was possible thanks to SPIE Visiting lecturer grant. In total,
approximately 60 students and researchers attended both presentations. One of his presentations
was also filmed and later available on University of Latvia Youtube channel -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEdtOxQ__ck .
Grants and awards
20 members received European Social Fund scholarship.
Inga Saknite received Officer Travel grant to attend “SPIE Optics & Photonics 2013” in San Diego,
USA.
Eriks Zaharans and Janis Zaharans received scholarship to study at Linköping University in Sweden
as ERASMUS exchange students.
