tHe alvaR aalto campUs– acropolis in the pine forest
The architecture of the Jyväskylä cam-pus represents Alvar Aalto’s (1898 –1976) modern synthesis of Greek and Roman antiquity, combined with the Anglo-American campus tradition. The land-scaped main campus is largely acces-sible only to pedestrians, with a sports field in the centre.
The tradition of conferment ceremonies was initiated
in the Middle Ages. Besides conferring doctoral degrees
and honorary doctorates, the unique grand academic celebration of the University
of Jyväskylä celebrates master’s degrees, too.
