RESEARCH I was co-investigator with Dr. Khosrowpanah of WERI on a research project funded by the US Geological Survey in which we developed a water system model and geographic information system of the Weno Chuuk water delivery system. In August 2012, I made a field trip to Chuuk to gather water system component data and to coordinate with officials at the Chuuk Public Utility Corporation. I completed this project and a technical report has been published by WERI.

Heitz, L. F. and sh. Khosrowpanah, “Improving the Weno, Chuuk Water Distribution System Using Hydraulic Modeling and Geographic Information Systems” University of Guam, Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI), Technical Report No 140, March 2013, 50 pages.

I completed work on a Guam Water Works Authority and Military funded study that investigated Ground Water under the Direct Influence of Surface water on Guam. This study is commonly known as the Guam GWUDI study. I analyzed continuous water quality data and bacterial data for 21 wells located in Northern Guam. I submitted separate technical completion reports for the GWA and military portions of the project to WERI. Project stake holder meetings were held in Guam in November of 2013. During these meetings, I e extensive briefing on the results of our studies. As a result of the data and analyses presented, all the wells on Guam were declared not under the direct influence of surface water. This new determination will quite likely save GWA and military rate payers millions in additional water rate increases in the future. I am presently co-investigator with Dr. Khosrowpanah of WERI, University of Guam on a project that was funded by the US Geological Survey. In this project we are developing a computerize water system model and Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Pohnpei Island water distribution system located in Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia. In August 2013, I made a field trip to Chuuk to gather water system component data and to coordinate with officials at the Pohnpei Utility Corporation. The water system model and GIS system development is nearing completion. The project should be completed by the end of February 2014. I am co-investigator with Dr. Khosrowpanah of WERI University of Guam on a proposal being submitted for funding by the US Geological Survey. This project is titled “Prediction of Flow Duration Curves at Ungaged Stream Sites in Guam”. If funded, we will use GIS modeling techniques to predict flow duration curves of daily streamflow in South Guam streams. This past year, I continued my own professional development by sharpening my programming skills for use in “Windows 8” Modern User Interface software development using Microsoft Visual Studio 2013. As a result, I am developing a hydraulic analysis software application package for Windows 8.1. I have nearly completed the first module which applies the commonly used Hazen Williams equation to compute pipe losses in closed conduit flow. I plan to add additional modules for closed conduit flow and open channel flow as time goes on.

I just completed all the required refresher courses for 2014 tax season. Ever since my retirement I have been working on a seasonal basis for H and R Block in Henderson, Nevada, preparing individual tax returns. I work for three and half months, from January till April 15. That little occupation keeps me out of trouble and mentally alert. Of course there is financial benefit too. We enjoyed our visit to Guam very much in early November. During our stay there Dr. Lorraine Yamashita treated us to a fantastic luncheon. Thanks, Lorraine. I also had the opportunity to call on UOG President,

Kathleen R. Owing-Jones, M.A.

Professor Emerita of English SERVICE Community Service My husband and I work with Mid City Concerns, an agency that works with the elderly. Specifically, we work with meals on Wheels program. Our clients are usually housebound and elderly, although some clients may be recovering from an accident or medical issue that has temporarily disabled them. Meals on Wheels insures that the clients get at least one hot meal each day. We do not work every day, but in our part-time service, we delivered more than 300 meals last year. Our other interest is the Ronal McDonald House, which provides affordable accommodations to families of ill children who are being treated at one of four hospitals. We volunteered on holidays to serve meals to those families who have to be away from their homes on special days. We are grateful to be of some help to people who are worried and frightened. Happily, on Thanksgiving Day, 2013, there were not so many ill children in Spokane, so there were not as many family members to serve dinner to, and we had a chance to chat with the few who were there. In 2014 we hope to do more in other areas such as the symphony and the museums. As long as we remain healthy, we will be useful where we can. I wish you and the University of Guam the very best year ever. It was a privilege to teach there, and it is a privilege to be a member of SEPRS.

To date, I have provided editorial reviews and suggested revisions for the first four books of the 10-book series.

SERVICE Community Service: As a member of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association and the Okinawan Genealogical Society of Hawaii, service to the community included: Served on the national Family Search Indexing Project whose goal was to input 1940 census data for all U.S. states and territories. This goal was reached by May 2013. My first goal was to assist with completion of the Hawaii 1940 census as this made it easier to identify family compositions and movement of immigrant families within Hawaii.

Continued to provide genealogical research assistance to numerous individuals using our locally created Okinawan Genealogical Society of Hawaii’s data base, and networking with individuals from Okinawa to expand research activities.

Co-chaired a committee which provided genealogy assistance and display of information to 5 Okinawan clubs during their annual celebrations. This project was to network with all 49 Okinawan clubs in generating genealogy interest and promoting knowledge of the culture and history of Okinawa.

Served on the committee which held a genealogy booth at the annual 2-day Okinawan Festival. The public was provided with one-to-one discussions on Ryukyu names, bookmarks with individual family surnames, and data base assistance.
