Introduction by the Editor

A World War Two Roll of Honour for the University of Edinburgh was compiled by members of the Graduates’ Association and first appeared in instalments in the University of Edinburgh Journal between 1943 and

1949. Twice the list was cumulated to include deaths that had been reported since the previous cumulation. No final cumulation appeared in the Journal after the war, nor was it printed as a separate publication. The compilers in the Association probably realised that more names would continue to be reported for some time. In due course, a World War Two commemorative panel was added to the University’s memorial in the Old Quad. As can be seen to this day, further names were added after the panel’s installation, but they were never added to the lists in the Journal.

It therefore seemed appropriate for the Association to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Journal and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, which both occur in 2015, by at last publishing a new cumulated list as a separate book.

Cumulated this list certainly is, but complete it may never be. A number of additional names have come to light in the meantime, mainly from schools’ rolls of honour and war records, of which we have been able to search no more than three as yet; so this small commemorative volume really represents a continuing work in progress. In particular, more names of the University’s non-teaching staff who died on war service, and of more Edinburgh alumni who fought and died on both sides, will be welcomed.

A digital version of the Roll of Honour will be added by the University Archivist to the University’s website, so that further names and details can be added as they are recalled and rediscovered. Families and friends of those not listed, as well as of those whose are listed but whose details need amended or expanded, are warmly invited to send those names and details in the first instance to the Editor of the Journal, who will communicate them to the Archivist. The website version will thus become the master Roll of Honour, and will be readily accessible to the world in memory of those who died.
