After graduating from Noblesville High School, Levinson attended the University of Chicagofor three years before transferring to Yale University from which he graduated in 1888. In 1891,he received an LL.B degree from Lake Forest College and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar.That same year he embarked on a legal career as an attorney practicing in Chicago. As a lawyer,Levinson specialized in industrial organizations and corporate law, however he often took on probono cases for those in need.
Levinson was married to Ruth Levinson and later Helen Bartlett Levinson, and was the father offour children-John, Horace Cilley, Ronald Bartlett and Helen Furnas.

Levinson’s peace activism started in earnest during the First World War when he tried topersuade Allied and German leaders to come to an accord. During World War I and itsaftermath he became a steady proponent of the Outlawry of War, a political movement toabolish war. He sought to legally ban war both for ethical reasons and for the large financialcosts to the belligerent nations. While at first supporting the idea of a League of Nations, hevociferously opposed it as it did not include a plan for outlawing war in the League covenant andhe protested against the Treaty of Versailles. He consulted with President Warren T. Hardingand Senator Philander C. Knox on his peace plan and presented the Knox-Levinson Outlawryof War Plan to the Disarmament Conference. He also worked closely with Senator William E.Borah on his peace campaigns. He later consulted on what would eventually become the 1928Kellogg-Briand Pact with French politician Aristide Briand. This international agreement wassigned by the governments of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, German, andJapan, with a total of 62 nations agreeing to not use war to resolve international conflict. ThePact is considered to be a predecessor for the eventual United Nations charter.
Along with his work on behalf of international peace, Levinson worked closely with Jane Addamson philanthropic efforts in Chicago. Other charitable interests included Yale University, variousJewish causes including financial support for the refugee crisis created by the rise of Nazismin the 1930s. In 1914, he established the Levinson Prize for Poetry magazine, which is stilladministered today.
In 1929 Levinson gave $50,000 to the University of Idaho to establish the William Edgar BorahOutlawry of War Foundation and in 1930 his name was put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1931 in he was given the Rosenberger Medal by the University of Chicago for his work ininternational relations. In 1934 he was decorated with the French Legion of Honor. He was alsothe author of “Aggression, International,” for The Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. SalmonLevinson passed away a long period of illness on February 2, 1941.
