The controller service is responsible to gather various kinds of information throughout the organization andmake sure to distribute the right piece of information in the right time, the right granularity to the rightperson.


STAKEHOLDER AND INFORMATION NEEDS

A lot of internal and external stakeholders need a very diverse set of information form the controller service. The University of Bern has to deliver information in timely manner to all those.

The University of Bern decided not to use a standard «off the shelf» EIS application but to build an EIS solution themselves entirely based on Microsoft products (one vendor strategy).

YESTERDAY

The pure MS Excel solution with lots of VBA coding has served well for long years. With increasingcomplexity and need for more diverse information, the boundaries of what this solution could do have beenreached performance wise and from a risk-of-failure/mistake standpoint of view.


TODAY

Today, UNIBE has set up a classical Enterprise Data Warehouse architecture. More source systems andfrontend tools are to be set productive very soon. Master Data Services help to reduce complexity.

MASTERDATA MANAGEMENT

Masterdata Management’s frontend is MS Excel – easy to handle by the controlling department and thusreducing potential inefficiencies in communicaition between IT and controlling. Source systems come and go- the data warehouse as single point of truth remains.


REPORTING SERVICES (SSRS)

MS SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) replace the old MS Excel solution. These reports are beingdistributed via an online portal. They are one of the most important sources of information for most of theUniversity’s staff.


EXCEL (POWER-PIVOT)

MS Excel Pivot Tables based on MS Power Pivot is the most important ad-hoc query tool. It is veryperformant (due to in-memory technology) and supports explorative research. Most people are used to thisinterface, though no training needed.


TOMORROW

In near future, more source systems are to be integrated and will deliever information to the EDWH. Executive Information shall be delievered in a more graphically appealing and easy to consume way to coworker’s andthe board’s mobile devices via cloud services.

POWER MAPS

Information which is related to geographic locations can easily be displayed with PowerMaps. Fly-over, animations of paths of analysis, a vast variety of perspectives and views make understanding of informationmuch easier and more appealing for the audience.


SHAREPOINT ONLINE / OFFICE 365

For distribution and collaboration, Office 365 with Sharepoint Online and PowerBI functionality are in POC at the University of Bern. The PowerBI Portal gives access to users with any internet-connected device, as longas there is a browser available.



EXCEL ONLINE (OS INDEPENDENT)

Browser-based view of the very same report. No on-premise installation of Microsoft Excel / PowerViewneeded. Fully interactive.



POWER BI APP ON WINDOWS 8.X

View of (once more) the same report via Windows 8.x App «Power BI App». With two fingertips, the user isdelivered with the information needed. Great way to deliver to top executives / board.



STRATEGY MAP WITH EXCEL (MANUALLY DONE)

Three KPI’s and two dimensions in one graphic. A lot of work, not exact, time dimension very hard to display(successive PPT-Slides, which have to be flipped forth and back).


STRATEGY MAP WITH POWER VIEW (ANIMATED)

Three KPI’s (x-axis, y-axis and bubble size) and two dimensions (bubble color and time-animation) displayedon one graph. Animated (time axis) and thus very easy to understand. Enables more focussed discussionsabout the business meaning and implications of the content, rather than about the correctness of the graph.
