DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL PHYSICS

MRI PHYSICIST (CLINICAL AND RESEARCH) – BAND 8A

£38,851 – £46,621 per annum

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the leading hospitals in Europe and has an international reputation for quality of care, information technology, clinical training and research. UHB provides direct clinical services to nearly 700,000 patients every year, serving a regional, national and international population. It is a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics and has the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe.

UHB employs over 7,200 staff and successfully transferred its services from two hospitals, into the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham which opened its doors to patients on June 16, 2010. It has 1,213 inpatient beds, 32 operating theatres and a 100-bed critical care unit, the largest co-located critical care unit in the world. UHB is host to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) and is world-renowned for its pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries. UHB has been designated both a Level 1 trauma centre and host of the UK’s first and only National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Centre for Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced MRI Physicist to join a team committed to research and development and to supporting the growing demand for clinical MRI services.

RRPPS is the radiation physics and protection service based within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). It is the largest and most experienced organisation in the Midlands providing a comprehensive radiation protection service. The successful applicant would join the growing MRI group in RRPPS, which supports approximately 20 scanners across the region including several 3T systems. In particular, this role has been created in partnership with the Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BCH) to lead developments at the recently opened NIHR 3T MRI Research Facility at BCH and to support clinical and research MRI at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). In collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical and research teams, you will be encouraged to initiate and undertake projects to support clinical research and service development at both sites. With dedicated research time available on 3T scanners at both BCH and QEHB, you will have ample scope to pursue interests in the development of methods and applications in functional MRI techniques such as spectroscopy, diffusion, perfusion and fMRI.

Significant relevant experience in clinical MRI is required, including clinically applied research or service development, quality assurance and safety advice. Applicants should have completed their training and hold HPC registration as a Clinical Scientist. A PhD related to MRI physics would be beneficial. Appointment at a lower level commensurate with experience and qualifications may be considered.
