The courses in Leiden’s Air and Space Law programme are taught bythe International Institute of Air and Space Law’s expert faculty,visiting international professors and distinguished legal practitionersspecialised in specific aspects of air and space law. We encourage anintensive interaction between students and teachers, typicallyresulting in greater involvement on the side of the students and,consequently, better results for you as a student.

After completion of the scheduled lectures (in May),you willundertake a 6-8 week internship in an institution dealing with eitherair or space law, often located beyond the Dutch border. Blendedlearning students are not required to complete an internship.

Career guidance

Leiden Law School offers career activities to all its Advanced Studiesstudents in the form of international CV writing workshops andseminars on establishing global careers. This faculty-level careersassistance is backed up by the student careers service of LeidenUniversity, which offers a wide range of services includingcommunication training, CV checks and workshops on jobapplication techniques. After graduation, non-European students have the opportunity tostay for an extra year while looking for job. They can apply for aresidence permit in the ‘Orientation Year for Graduates SeekingEmployment’ scheme.

Staff

The courses in the advanced master’s Air and Space Law are taughtby the excellent staff of the International Institute of Air and SpaceLaw, and by visiting international professors and distinguishednational and international legal practitioners.

The management of the programme is in the hands of two renownedresearchers:

Professor Dr. Pablo Mendes de Leon, Director of theInternational Institute of Air and Space Law and professor ofair and space law. Dr. Mendes de Leon holds numerouspositions in international organisations that work to combineair and space law and education and is involved in academicresearch as well as research for third parties.Drs. Tanja Masson-Zwaan, Deputy Director of theInternational Institute of Air and Space Law and AssistantProfessor in Air and Space Law. Drs. Masson-Zwaan lectureson space law all over the world, is involved in research projectsand advises the Dutch government and other national andinternational bodies on matters relating to space law.

Organisation

The International Institute of Air and Space Law

The Air and Space Law advanced master’s programme is offered bythe International Institute of Air and Space Law of the Leiden LawSchool at Leiden University. The Institute was founded in 1986 anddeveloped from the chair created for Air Law in 1938. It is one of theleading international academic research and teaching institutes in theworld. In the Institute, we specialise in legal and policy issuesregarding aviation and space activities in the broadest sense of theword.

Exchange with the air and space industry

The relevance of the Institute’s academic work is guaranteed by theextensive exchange of information with the air transport and spaceindustry. We organise courses and conferences on all aspects of

aviation law, space law and policy. The Institute forms an integralpart of the Leiden Law School and co-operates with many world-class academic institutions. It maintains close contacts with relevantorganisations and institutions, within and outside Europe.

Entry requirements

In order to be considered for the Air and Space Law advancedmaster’s programme, students should:

have completed their full law degree (offering access to legalpractice) with sufficient knowledge of international law. Someprior knowledge of Air and Space Law is certainly an asset, butis not compulsory. In addition, candidates for the blendedlearning version of the Advanced Master’s programme musthave at least five years of professional experience in the field ofair and/or space activities, as the programme is specificallydesigned for experienced professionals;

demonstrate a sufficiently high performance in a general lawprogramme, validated by grades on their universitydegree/transcript and accompanying grade criteria, and twoletters of recommendation from current or previousprofessors and/or employers;

have sufficient knowledge of European Law and internationalorganisations. Applicants whose legal studies did not includethese subject areas may be admitted provided they take thecompulsory supplementary courses offered;

show documented evidence of relevant (work) experience, i.e.,working for a law firm, internships etc. – this informationshould be include in your curriculum vitae

demonstrate a keen interest in aviation and space activities andthe legal implications thereof, illustrated by, for example, aletter of motivation, past experience related to the subject i.e.,professional experience, publications, conference papers;

proven English language proficiency, demonstrated by way ofa TOEFL test (overall score of 600 paper-based/250computer-based or 100 Internet-based) or IELTS test (overallscore of 7.0), evidenced by an appropriate test, occasionallycomplemented by a telephone interview.

in addition to the above-mentioned overall English test scores,minimum band scores of IELTS 6.0 (TOEFL 20) are requiredfor all sub-sections.

This requirement does not apply if you have:

completed your education in Canada (except Quebec), USA,UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, oran International Baccalaureate.

NOTE: Applicants may be offered admission to a presessional English courseprior to entry if they have the following English language test scores– this always at the discretion of the programme admission board:

An overall English score of IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 (TOEFL 80 and 90respectively) – with no band scores lower than IELTS 5.5(TOEFL 17)A sufficient overall English score, but one or more band scoreof IELTS 5.5 (TOEFL 17)

Meeting the admission requirements does not necessarily guaranteean admission offer. Students are selected on the basis of overall merit.

Note

All of Leiden University’s LL.M. and LL.M. Advanced Studiesprogrammes are NVAO accredited. However, as the LL.M.Advanced Studies programmes are not funded by the Dutch Ministryof Education, Dutch and EEA students will be required to pay thesame tuition fee as that of (other) international students.
