DELPHINE HIRASUNA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TERRY HEFFERNAN

Since 1777, the American fl ag has been raised

high in wartime triumph and peacetime

celebration, sewn lovingly onto quilts, appropriated by the

commercial sphere, and faithfully honored every Fourth of July.

Far from being a static symbol, the fl ag has been subjected to

countless graphic interpretations, each version owing more to the

personality of the maker than to established formal conventions.

And nowhere are these continual changes better viewed than in this

collection of Stars and Stripes artifacts.

• Perfect for patriots, servicemen, their families, and history buffs,

this unique collection is a fascinating and decorative addition to

any room.9 7 8 0 7 8 9 3 2 1 8 6 2

Few events captivated the world’s attention as President Obama’s

historic campaign. Not only did it stir passionate political

momentum, but it also inspired an array of work from a world of

artists, illustrators, and graphic designers.

Innovative portraits and graphic designs became a powerful symbol

of the country’s desire for change, and engaging artists from the

grassroots level to the international level became a central strategy to

inspire passion and win the presidential race. Shepard Fairey, who

made the iconic “Hope” image, created the Manifest Hope art shows,

featuring 150 artists who used their talents to carry Obama to victory.

Art for ObamaDesigning Manifest Hope and the Campaign for Change

EDITED BY SHEPARD FAIREY AND JENNIFER GROSS

In Art for Obama 2011, Fairey and Jennifer Gross have collected

collages, paintings, photo composites, and computer-generated pieces,

showcasing the well-known images of the campaign as well as the less

famous, but equally creative, works from around the globe.

• This calendar is an extraordinary keepsake for design and art

afi cionados, as well as supporters of the forty-fourth president of

the United States.

There are eight species of bears living today, and the Zoo

is home to six of them. The polar, brown, American black,

and giant panda bears are well known. Yet most people

are barely (dare we say “bearly”) aware of the Asiatic black,

spectacled, sloth, and sun bears. All of the members of the Family

Ursidae have the bear essentials: short, thick limbs, big, heavily

built bodies, large heads, and a flat-footed, or plantigrade, gait.
