y UPT is a service which enables access to telecommunications services
by allowing personal mobility.
y It enables each UPT user to participate in a user-defined set of
services, and to initiate and receive calls to and from any user (UPT or
non-UPT) on the basis of a unique, personal, network transparent UPT
number across multiple networks at any terminal; fixed, movable or
mobile, irrespective of geographic location and limited only by terminaland network capabilities and restrictions imposed by the network
Provider.

y In fixed telecommunication networks, users/subscribers are
associated with the network access point of the terminal, the pointof attachment (network access identification). In first generation
mobile telecommunications networks, users/subscribers are
associated with the terminal in use (terminal identification).
y For the UPT service, the fixed association between terminal or
network access and user identification is removed.
y In order to offer UPT users the capability of establishing and
receiving calls on any terminal and at any location, the identification
of UPT users is treated separately from the addressing of terminals
and network access points. This is done by the means of a UPT
number.
y The UPT user is personally associated with his own UPT number,
which is used as the basis for making and receiving calls (personal
numbering). The UPT subscription is also charged on the basis of the
UPT user's UPT number.

The UPT subscription is also charged on the basis of the UPT user's UPT
number.
The principle of such user identification is indicated in figure 1.
In the case of a call to a UPT user, the UPT number is the called number
used by the originating party of a
call to a UPT user.

y A UPT user should only need a subscription to oneUPT service provider to obtain access to all nationaland international UPT services, and the UPTsubscriber associated with the UPT user should receivebills from only one UPT service provider.
y A UPT user may use any terminal for receivingincoming calls and making outgoing calls.
y The UPT number also makes it possible to use the UPTservice with access from multiple networks and, inprinciple, to use any basic telecommunications serviceoffered by the networks.

y UPT will impose several requirements on future
networks. Each UPT user should ideally have a singleUPT number by which he or she can be reached at anynetwork access point.
y On this number it should also be possible with
different user roles, e.g. the user as a private person oras employee.
y The UPT service should not depend on network type,e.g. it should be possible to roam between ISDNs,
dedicated data networks and B-ISDN.y Note that if a shared numbering plan does not exist
between these networks, then the user must have oneUPT number for each network.

y A general top level conceptual architecture of a telecommunications network isshown in Figure 2.
y It consists of three interacting domains each representing a distributed process.

A refinement of the general architecture valid for UPT call processing is shown inFigure 3.

y The service domain has been sub-divided into an A-party service and a B-has been refined as access points
and switched path.y Each of the new elements may represent a distributed
process. The manipulation of the connection domain,i.e. the switched path, is performed by either the A-
party service, the B-party service, or both.y This simple call processing architecture may be
mapped onto its realization architecture, or for thatmatter, another conceptual architecture.

y Object Orientation (OO) is a powerful method forspecification and implementation of complex systems. Some important aspects of OO are: (2)
y Modularity
y Reusability
y Abstraction
y Inheritance
