Biographie
Pierre Boulez est né le 26 mars 1925 à Montbrison (Loire).Après des études en classe de mathématiques spéciales, il se tourne définitivement vers
la musique en 1942 et s’installe à Paris où il est admis deux ans plus tard dans la classed’harmonie d’Olivier Messiaen au Conservatoire de Paris. Andrée Vaurabourg lui enseigneraensuite le contrepoint, Olivier Messiaen la composition et René Leibowitz la technique dodé-caphonique.
Nommé directeur de la musique de scène à la Compagnie Renaud-Barrault, en 1946,il compose la même année la Sonatine pour Flûte et Piano, la Première Sonate pour Pianoet la première version du Visage nuptial pour soprano, alto et orchestre de chambre, sur despoèmes de René Char. Dès lors sa carrière de compositeur s’affirme.
En 1953, naissent les Concerts du Petit Marigny qui prendront l’année suivante le nomde Domaine Musical dont il assure la direction jusqu’en 1967.
En 1966, sur l’invitation de Wieland Wagner, il dirige Parsifal à Bayreuth, puis Tristan
et Isolde au Japon.En 1969, Pierre Boulez dirige pour la première fois l’Orchestre Philharmonique de New
York, dont il prendra la direction de 1971 à 1977, succédant ainsi à Léonard Bernstein.Parallèlement, il est nommé chef permanent du BBC Symphony Orchestra à Londres, fonc-tion qu’il assume de 1971 à 1975.
A la demande du Président George Pompidou, Pierre Boulez accepte de fonder et dediriger l’Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), qui ouvrira sesportes à l’automne 1977.
En 1975, Michel Guy, Secrétaire d’Etat aux Affaires Culturelles, annonce la création del’Ensemble InterContemporain (EIC), dont la présidence est confiée à Pierre Boulez.
En 1976, il est invité à Bayreuth pour diriger la tétralogie de Wagner, dans une miseen scène de Patrice Chéreau, pour la commémoration du centenaire du Ring . Cinq annéesde suite, il dirigera cette production qui ensuite sera enregistrée sur disque et cassette vidéo.
Nommé en 1976 professeur au Collège de France, il est également l’auteur de nom-breux écrits sur la musique.

En 1979, il dirige la première mondiale de la version intégrale de Lulu d’Alban Berg, à
l’Opéra de Paris.Parallèlement, Pierre Boulez s’associe à d’autres projets importants pour la diffusion de
la musique, telle la création de l’Opéra de la Bastille et de la cité de la musique à la Villette.En 1988, il réalise une série de six émissions télévisées, intitulées „Boulez XXe siècle“.Dans le cadre du Festival d’Avignon, il dirige Répons à la Carrière Boulbon, et est le com-positeur invité du Centre Acanthes à Villeneuve-les-Avignon où il donne une série de cours dedirection d’orchestre.
En 1992, Pierre Boulez décide de quitter la direction de l’IRCAM afin de se consacreressentiellement à la direction d’orchestre et à la composition et signe un contrat d’exclusi-vité avec la Deutsche Grammophon.
L’année de son 70e anniversaire est marquée par un cycle de concerts pour l’inaugu-ration de la cité de la musique à la Villette/Paris, une tournée mondiale avec le LSO, unesérie de concerts aux Japon avec quatre orchestres différents et la production de Moïse et Aaron à l’Opéra d’Amsterdam, dans une mise en scène signée Peter Stein.
En 1996 il dirige les grands orchestres de Berlin, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles,
Vienne et retourne à Salzbourg avec Moïse et Aaron . En automne, il entreprend une grandetournée en Amérique latine à la tête de l’EIC.
Après les concerts pour le XXe anniversaire de l’EIC en janvier 1997 et une nouvelleproduction du Rossignol et du Pierrot Lunaire au Théâtre du Châtelet (mise en scène S.Nordey), il se retire du pupitre de mars 1997 à mars 1998, pour se consacrer à la compo-sition. Création d’ Anthèmes 2 pour violon solo et électronique au festival Donaueschingen.Il reprend son intense activité de direction auprès des orchestres, entre autres, de Cleveland,Chicago et Vienne et tourne avec l’EIC et le LSO. Au Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, il dirige le Château de Barbe Bleue de Bartók, mise en scène par la choréographe Pina Bausch. Créationde sur Incises à Edimbourg, Bâle et Paris. Création de Notations VII par Daniel Barenboïm et l’Orchestre Symphonique de Chicago. Signe un contrat de collaboration en tant que compo-siteur et chef d’orchestre avec Carnegie Hall et y donne ateliers, masterclasses et concertsavec l’Ensemble InterContemporain et les orchestres de Cleveland et Chicago. Enregistre sesœuvres Messagesquisses , Anthèmes 2 et sur Incises .
