2. ACTIVITY CHAPTER
2.1 School workshop
Because of the international year of light, the Universidad EAFIT SPIE Student
Chapter, made a set of experiments about optics and photonics. The
experiments are teaching because of our public: School kids and teenager
along the city.
The experiments and their materials, in which we spent the economic support
given by SPIE, are:
• Colorful shadows and composition of light (White light lanterns; red, blue
and Green cellophane and a white screen)
• Total internal reflection (see-through container with oil, water and alcohol; a
green laser.)
• Hologram (Holograms made by the optics researchers of our university)
• Diffraction and refraction, composition of light. (CDs, lanterns, laser and
diffraction slits)
• Reflection and a virtual image (an iPad and a see-through acrylic
arrangement where the projection is).
The schools where we made the workshops were:
• Pedro Justo Berrio
• Compañía de María La Enseñanza
• Gimnasio los Alcázares
• I.E Loyola para la Ciencia y la Innovación
The number of members who visited each of those schools were 15. The
workshops were performed in the morning, so we provided our members with
snacks, lunch and transportation.
2.2 Events
2.2.1 IYL committee
Figure 1. IYL Antioquia logo.
Over the year we’ve been part of the IYL (International year of Light) committee in
Antioquia, which organized activities along the metropolitan area according the
topics of this special year. The Colombian optics network (Red Colombiana de
Óptica), Astronomy society of Antioquia (Sociedad Antioqueña de Astronomía),
Explora Park, the planetarium, Rute N (Ruta N), University of Antioquia, Pontifical
Bolivarian University and National University were also part of this committee and
logistical support in the activities.
The activities had a positive impact and reception along the community. The
attendance was high and the participation was very active.
Our chapter members contributed as a greater percentage in the logistical support
of the events. We provided them as well, transportation, snacks and lunch.
• International meeting "Colombia in the International Year Of Light": Nobel
prizes and other scientists.
Figure 2. “Colombia en el año internacional de la luz” conference flyer.
The most important event took place in Bogotá first and then in Medellín.
Our members were guides of the several scientists who attend the event. We also
were logistical support every day of it.
Lots of scientists and two Nobel prizes, Serge Haroche and David Wineland, came
to Colombia to talk about their job.

2.2.2 A night full of stars
One night we organized a gathering with our members inside the university (due to
administrative problems with the University we could do this activity outside the
campus, in the field) with the equipment necessary to see the stars. A few days
before the gathering, we had a meeting with an expert in telescopes and
astronomy so he could taught us how to use correctly the equipment. Again, we
provided our members with food and transportation. We need also the insurance of
the equipment.
2.3 Periodical meetings We did several meetings through the year; starting from the second week of
classes we organized meetings every two weeks. If we had an event, we did
extraordinary meetings. At these meetings we discussed ideas, plans and future
events.
2.4 Inducement of new undergraduate students 2015-1 and 2015-2 In order to inform and receive the new undergraduate students of the EAFIT University, from January 21 to 23 and from July 17 to 18, the EAFIT Student Chapter organized the first activity with different optics experiments (explaining basic optics phenomena such as diffraction, reflection and interference of light) to motivate them to participate in our group and to learn more about optics. We also gave chocolates with the logo of the Chapter. We obtained a good answer principally by the new students of programs related with science and engineering areas. They were interested in being part of the student chapter and motivated to research more about applications of optics in their fields of interest. 2.5 Recruitment of new members In this extraordinary meeting the interested students could solve their doubts about
the Chapter activity and benefits of being part of SPIE. 13 students came to this
meeting.
Also, officer members went to a physics engineering lecture to talk about the
Chapter and the activities we where planning. This was a good strategy because
almost all the new students became part of the Chapter.
2.6 EAFIT social group “SERES” and EAFIT Chapter The social student group of the University “SERES” asked us to join them in a
charity event with poor children. As in the school workshop, we performed some
basic optics experiments. Kids were really happy and interested.
2.7 Pizza meetings In order to integrate us and discus ideas and results we did a pizza meeting one time every semester.
3. DETAILS OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES FOR THE FUTURE
3.1 First semester
Activity Date Person in charge Objective Description Notes
Induction January 20 to 22 Officer members
To introduce the Chapter to
the new undergraduate
students.
We will show what the Chapter makes, executing some optical experiments that will be seen in the middle of the campus by the new students.
We will give some candies.
Recruiting new members February 3 Officer members
To inform interested students in detail of the activities and objectives of the Chapter.
To solve the doubts of the students who are interested in joining the group. This is an extraordinary meeting.
Refreshment for the attendants.
Full Chapter meetings February 1 to May 13 Officer members
To discuss important
topics for the Chapter.
All members will discuss ideas and organize plans and activities.
Meetings will be hold every two weeks and will have refreshment for the attendants.
New statutes February 17 Manuela Quiroz To redefine
the statutes of the Chapter.
In the meeting we will change and/or
add some new necessary statutes.
Refreshment for the attendants.
Pizza evenings March 11 and May 6 Sebastián Ruiz
To share a good time
with the active members of the Chapter.
Integration time. Extraordinary meetings.
School workshop Through the whole semester Officer members
To share our knowledge in
optics and science in
general with school
children.
Some active Chapter members will teach children, through experiments, some important optics and science phenomena.
The amount of workshops can vary depending on the interest of schools (sometimes we have had some unexpected workshop requests).
Observing the stars June 11 to 12 Officer members To see and to
study night sky.
The idea is to realise a two days trip to some farm so we could see and study the Universe using telescopes and sky maps.
We will pay transportation, lodging and food for the attendants.
Publicity Through the whole semester
Different active members
To be recognised by every member
of the University
community.
We will show our activities to the University community. Flyer.
Film shows Two times in the semester Officer members
To include the University
community in the Chapter
activities.
This in an open activity for the University members.
We would like to show Cosmos by Carl Sagan.
Acquisition of tools for experiments First week of February Officer members
To provide the group with necessary tools for
experiments,
We have seen that we need some tools so we can correctly perform all tje experiments we have planned.
Flashlights, lasers, optical items, stationery, security lights, etc.
