EDUCATION

Day of Action: Stuff the BusStuff the Bus is an annual school supply giveaway to help children in-need get ready for school. We take donated school supplies and stuff them into backpacks to help each of our students dignity and confidence as they set out to start their school year. Last year we helped distribute 700 backpacks and this year, on August 11th, our goal is 1,000 backpacks!

Spark: Igniting Hearts for LearningUnited Way of Mat-Su kicked off the pilot to our Spark program in Fall of 2015. Spark provides in-school tutoring and academic mentoring for grades K-12. We are in the volunteer recruitment phase and in need of adult and high school tutors and mentors.

Early Childhood Partnership of Mat-Su (ECPM)United Way of Mat-Su staffs and coordinates the Early Childhood Partnership’s family events, and continuing education and training for local child care providers. The Facebook page is very active with community activities, Pinterest ideas for parents with children under five, and more. We have served over 200 families this year.

INCOME

Homeless Connect2015 was United Way of Mat-Su’s fourth year participating and coordinating the Project Homeless Connect in the Mat-Su. Over 200 homeless people had access to a broad range of services, including medical check-ups, eye screening, legal services, employment assistance, food, clothing, toiletries and more.

Sockeye Fire Relief EffortsLast summer the Willow community was tragically impacted by the Sockeye Wildfire. Homes and property were destroyed. 100% of Sockeye Fire Relief Fund went to Willow families to help rebuild what was lost. We also helped with volunteer and case management, property cleanup, provided porta potties, outhouses toyo stoves, and roofing, supporting over 40 people.

2-1-1 & Mat-Su Valley Resource GuideFor the last six years the United Way of Mat-Su has compiled and distributed a comprehensive catalogued Resource Guide for information on services and programs in the Mat-Su Valley. We distributed over 4,000 resource guides in 2015. We also provide all this information to the United Way 2-1-1 service directory. The Resource Guide is also available online at unitedwaymatsu.org or via our free United Way of Mat-Su app.


HEALTH

Be [YOU] Campaign: Alaska Wellness CoalitionThe Alaska Wellness Coalition (AWC), staffed by United Way launched its Be [YOU] media campaign in 2015. The Be [YOU] campaign was developed by the AWC and features teens around the state, showcasing their healthy behaviors, values and beliefs. The campaign celebrates and emphasizes the message: 78% of Alaska teens do not drink.

THRIVE Mat-SuIn 2015, THRIVE sponsored trainings for Effects of Trauma & Mental Health Conference and Early Childhood Mental Health Institute. Coalition members held 21 meetings with community leaders to promote the Be [You] media campaign and hosted three community town halls focusing on drugs and alcohol. Thrive provided training for 24 professionals who work with young children learn techniques to teach children to self-soothe, participated in discussions relating to ACEs and resilience as well as learn about tools to use to aid children to re- direct and/or self-soothe. Thrive also compiled a list of 120 community strategies and programs in the Mat-Su that exist for prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery for substance abuse.

Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition ProgramGives low income seniors access to fresh, nutritious, locally-grown produce, herbs, and honey from local farmers markets. In 2015, 46 farmers participated in this program.
