UNITED WAY OF MIAMI-DADE COVID-19 RELIEF RESPONSEIn early 2020, COVID-19 reached our shores and by mid-March, our country and our community were on lockdown. With 5 out of 10 households (54 percent) in Miami-Dade County, living in, or one emergency away from, poverty, COVID-19 exacerbated an already difficult situation for ALICE individuals and families.

Over a period of 10 months, United Way of Miami-Dade disbursed nearly $33 million dollars in emergency assistance and relief, having an impact on more than 68,000 individuals and 448 small businesses.

EXTENDING A HELPING HANDOn March 16, together with our partners at Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald, we activated Operation Helping Hands and with it, launched the Miami Pandemic Response Fund with $500,000 in seed funding created through an unprecedented funders’ collaborative to respond to this emergency. Families and individuals impacted by reduced hours, furloughs and layoffs received assistance with rent and mortgage, food and medication.

Meet Jeff, a small business owner who had to close his gym due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Through a grant from the Small Business Assistance Program, he was able to keep his business afloat during the waiting period and focus on putting measures in place and establish guidelines to provide a clean, safe and sanitized environment for reopening.

HELPING SMALL BUSINESSES As part of the broader Miami Pandemic Response Fund, and with small businesses a backbone of our local economy, we also launched the Small Business Assistance Program to help small businesses that may not have been eligible for other assistance. Acting as the clearinghouse, our United Way Center for Financial Stability, in partnership with Branches, processed applications and provided micro-grants to help small businesses continue to operate and provide jobs in our community during the slowdown. These businesses also received technical assistance to help them emerge from the crisis poised for growth and sustainability.

UNITED WAY AND MIAMI-DADE COUNTY JOIN FORCES Miami-Dade County selected United Way to disburse more than $30 million in relief assistance provided by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The Miami-Dade Pandemic Assistance Program launched in early August with an initial $20 million in relief aid, followed in November with a second allocation of nearly $11 million, providing much-needed emergency relief to individuals, families and their children and veterans.

Our United Way team led this massive undertaking, with the assistance of five nonprofit agency partners: Branches, CCDH (The Advocacy Network on Disabilities), Centro Campesino, MUJER and Sant La. In all, the team reviewed nearly 24,000 applications, responded to more than 8,500 emails, and answered close to 7,000 calls – many times providing guidance to other assistance programs available throughout the county and municipalities.

Local businesses and organizations came together to provide in-kind donations to help keep our neighbors safe by donating masks, face shields and hand sanitizers as well as donating valuable air time and billboard access to keep our community informed.

Meet Kyle, an Air Force veteran who moved to Miami last year to buy a home and start a family, but used up most of their savings after his wife was furloughed. He received help to pay rent and buy groceries as they welcomed their new baby boy.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORSVolunteerMiami.org, United Way’s engagement platform, became the go-to portal for our volunteers as well as for local partners and nonprofits to connect and help our community weather the storm. United Way and 35 local nonprofits offered on-site and remote pandemic relief service activities.

VOLUNTEERS engaged in remote pandemic relief projects such as writing letters thanking front-line personnel and first responders, making storytelling videos to share with homebound children, tutoring and mentoring youth, phoning older adults during self-isolation

VOLUNTEERS helped distribute food/meals to 50,000+ FAMILIES at Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Agency Partners, Mission United veterans, among others

MEALS delivered to 1,700 OLDER ADULTS following the closure of adult care centers

NEWBORN AND INFANT CARE PACKAGES delivered to 580 FAMILIES at 19 Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership sites, including our United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education

Meet Guadalupe, a single mom laid off from her job at a plant nursery, was able to cover rent and buy groceries to feed her three children with funds she received through the Miami Pandemic Response Fund.

Behind the scenes, our advocacy efforts played a key role early in the pandemic and throughout the months thereafter. We mobilized support of Federal relief for individuals, families, nonprofits and businesses by calling upon our congressional leaders to pass the CARES Act, which was signed into legislation on March 27. Our advocacy team participated in webinars with County and Federal elected officials to provide knowledge of best practices and technical expertise to other nonprofits and responded to their requests for assistance. The team also provided the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and the County Commission with status reports on the Miami-Dade Pandemic Assistance Program and the disbursement of funds.
