United Way of Greater New Haven is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And while much has changed over the past century, one thing that has not changed is United Way’s focus on improving people’s lives. Throughout the decades, United Way has been part of the fabric of our community, mobilizing people to help their neighbors in ways that are only possible when we work together.

United Way plays a unique leadership role in the community – leveraging resources, both human and financial, to solve our toughest challenges through partnership and innovation. And 2020 has definitely presented us with challenges. The pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives – school, work, and family life. It has also brought to the forefront the inequities around health outcomes and economic opportunities that disproportionately hurt our Black and Brown neighbors and threaten our community’s overall vitality.

Because of our ability to pull donors, volunteers and partners together, United Way has been able to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of our neighbors. We have expanded services to meet increased demand, created new solutions in response to new needs, and partnered in creative ways to maximize impact.

And, while we provide the help that families need today, we also help them build a strong future, so they can move beyond surviving to thriving. Our success as a region requires that we provide opportunities for everyone to reach their potential through education, workforce training, and high-quality jobs.

My experiences at the food pantry were so positive – not only with the amazing United Way staff, but also the other volunteers and local Hamden community members who we were able to serve. Whether they are masked and ready to feed neighbors, or in their living room recording stories for students, volunteer support has not wavered.”
