Having returned from Spa at the end of July after a disappointing race, the team were facing aquick turnaround for the next race in Assen for round five of the European Supercar Challenge.
Unfortunately, that race weekenddidn’t go to plan either as the first racesaw Jim punted off during the first lap,and engine failure in the McLarenmeant the team couldn’t take part inthe second race.
Less than a week later, we were on themove again, this time on our way toBrands Hatch for round five of theBritish GT Championship. At the Kent
circuit, Mark and Matt brought the Audi home in P6, adding more points to their current total. TheMcLaren of Jody and Glynn had to retire with a gear box control unit problem and Zak andÁlvaro’s McLaren dramaticallycrashed out of the race after ahigh speed puncture, with Zak atthe wheel.
We now lie third in thechampionship, with three moreraces to go.

Twenty-four hour motor races are rarely won in the opening minutes but they can certainly belost and that was the unfortunate case for United Autosports in the 65th edition of the legendaryTotal 24 Hours of Spa at the end of July.
On only the second lap with just five minutes on the clock and with Glynn Geddie at the wheel, our Audi R8 LMS ultra was hit hard and launched in to a spin at the La Source hairpin.
And while Glynn set competitive lap times before a scheduled pit-stop for a driver change andfull service (fuel and tires), Mark Patterson pitted with almost 90mins on the clock to repair thefront nose “splitter” and have the right rear upright replaced – both of which were damaged inthe contact at the beginning of the race.
The 46min pit-stop for repairs effectively scuppered any chance the Audi R8 LMS ultra of Will,Glynn, Alain and Mark had of claiming a top-result in the ultra-competitive Pro-Am category.
Ultimately a rare Audi engine failure after four hours – the first United Autosports has suffered in62 races since the team’s formation in 2010 – brought a halt to its one-off Blancpain EnduranceSeries appearance which marked the team’s fourth consecutive year of contesting the annualSpa race – arguably the most important and prestigious GT3 sports car race in the world.

The team went to Assen with high hopes of extending their cha be the case as two DNF’s meant they scored no points to add t qualifying went well as usual, with Jim and Glynn putting the Mc of both races. What is your job role at United? Race Engineer for the 23 car - and tea maker!
How long have you worked at UnitedAutosports? Only since the start of the 2013 British GT season
Your full time job is at McLaren. What is your jobrole there and what does it involve? My full time role is Transmission Designer, mainlyfocused on the oil system. That can include anythingfrom scheming a new system, detailed design ofinternals to analysing data from the previous raceweekend and trying to diagnose faults. I’m keen tomove trackside and that is where my role withUnited will help me gain valuable experience. I alsoworked as a trackside performance engineer at the Silverstone young driver test this year
What do you get up to outside work? I don’t seem to have much time outside workcurrently but I’ve recently moved flats so DIY seemsto be a recurring theme to my weekends off. I really enjoy my music so it’ll normally be something involving that, unless I’m in training formy next marathon!
How did you get into racing? I guess when I was younger I watched Formula 1,
but never really imagined working in the business.I wasn’t fortunate enough to attend any events then, which is why I think things like British GT arebrilliant for bringing racing to local tracks foreveryone to enjoy and hopefully inspiring some ofthe younger ones among the crowd to get involved.I started by entering the IMechE Formula Studentcompetition with my university (Queen’s UniversityBelfast) and have never really looked back
What is your nickname and why?I don’t have one that I’m aware of, maybe ask the guys
What is it that makes you passionate aboutmotorsport?I love the challenge. I’m very competitive and I likecoming up with ideas that bring that little extra thatit takes to win. I also really enjoy the pressure of arace weekend
What has been your funniest racing experienceso far?Falling head first out of a 12C GT3 car, and face firstonto the floor!

European Supercar Challeng Disappointment for the team after two DNF’s
United Untied August 2013 Rev4 23/08/2013 11:00 Page 2
United Autosports left Brands Hatch after a sixth place finish for championship contenders Matt Bell and MarkPatterson. Their Audi R8 LMS ultra qualified in 12th place, but the pair fought their way through the field to finishsixth. Towards the end of the race, Matt was catching the leading cars but ran out of time to make a pass. Markand Matt now lie third in the championship, only 16 points behind the leaders.
Although the race wasn’t as successful for the two McLaren MP4-12C’s, Jody Firth showed his true racing skillin the #24 car, making his way up as far as 6th place from a lowly 28th on the grid. After a successful pit stopand driver change, Glynn Geddie made his way out onto the track for his stint. Unfortunately, a problem with thegear box control unit meant Glynn had to come into the pits and retire the car. Up until that point it was lookinglike a certain podium finish was on the cards.
Zak Brown’s race ended rather abruptly, only five minutes before the end of his stint, with a spectacular tyreblow out at 160mph which spun the McLaren around, hitting the barrier and destroying the back end of the car.Fortunately, Zak walked away from what he described as the biggest crash of his life. After qualifying in P13,Zak, and team mate Álvaro Parente looked to be on for a good result until the car was unceremoniously forcedout of the race before Álvaro even had the chance to drive.
The team now head to Zandvoort, Holland, for the penultimate round of the British GT Championship whereMark and Matt aim to add to their championship points to challenge for the title.
British GTChampionship: Round 5 – Brands HatchMore points for Mark and Matt in the Audi

Out and AboutGeddie’s at Knockhill
Two days after the race atBrands Hatch, Glynn Geddie wasback behind the wheel of theSupercar Challenge McLarenMP4-12C, with his father Jim,giving passenger laps to a fewlucky sponsors and guests of theteam at the Scottish circuit,Knockhill.
Given that the McLaren only hasone seat (for the driver) the teamwere faced with fitting a secondseat for passengers. Not onlythat, but they had to repair theengine for the #112 McLaren
after its failure in Assen. Along with the McLaren, a Mini Cooper was alsoavailable for passenger laps, which Glynn and Jim thrashed round their home circuit.
All the guests enjoyedtheir day immensely – asdid our Data Engineer,Ben, who was luckyenough to get takenround the circuit in theMcLaren with Glynn atthe wheel!

Question:I want to propose to my girlfriend on the start line of aracing circuit. Which one do you think is the mostromantic?Answer:I really wouldn’t advise it. It sounds dangerous anddefinitely more expensive than motor racing.
Event FeatureUnilever event - Silverstone
A few days after the Brands Hatch race, two of our historic cars wereheading to Silverstone, the home of motor racing, to be on displayat a Unilever event. The 1991 Penske PC20 and the 1986 Porsche962 were on display for the day. The Penske was driven by RickMears to victory from pole position at the 1991 Marlboro 500 atMichigan International Speedway. The Porsche was one of the mostsuccessful sports cars in history, accumulating 54 wins in IMSAcompetition alone, 40 of which came between 1985 and 1987. Bothare looked after by United Autosports as part of their Race Cars ofDistinction collection.
