I write this in tears and pain, reflective and introspective, looking at the past, present and potential of the subject matter of this note -- The Church.

My testimony is that I have been in ministry for at least 20+ years. I have seen a lot: cussing preachers, lying preachers, gay preachers, stealing preachers, etc. My mantra back then was simple: "I love God, but hate church!" I would say that unapologetically across pulpits as people would stand, cheer "Amen" and slap high five over my declaration. In my explanation, I would state that church had become this political, unethical, uber- spiritual, capitalistic, personality driven HYPE show on Sunday mornings! I HATED IT, and so did most of the people I interacted with.

In my extreme "Protestantism," the Lord found me! During one of our shut-ins, He asked me, "How can you hate what I love!?" I spewed my rebuttal to Him about what I had seen and even been a part of. He uttered three simple words that changed my life -- "She's My Bride." It is in this vein that I submit this plea.

There are many people who are disenfranchised with the church. It’s neither the “church” nor God that they don’t like or trust; it’s the attendants and those in attendance. What’s the difference? The attendants are the leaders of the church - the face, the attitude, and the voice of The Bride. Her reputation is based on our actions yet when we mess up, She takes the full brunt and covers us. Our embarrassment is felt regionally; Her’s – GLOBALLY. Our reputation is scarred for the moment; Her’s – GENERATIONALLY. She has become an afterthought for us because She has been there for us for over 2 millennia. But let the truth be told in our inner most parts, we wouldn’t have what we have, nor be who we are without HER!

If this is the behavior of the attendants, then we can only imagine what those in attendance are like!? Don’t we realize or care that there are people who are running from Her because of us? Look at it this way, they love the Bridegroom (Jesus) and were possibly looking forward to the wedding and the reception. But

A Love Affair by Overseer C. Sterling Davis, II

Page 21: United Times ~ Mid-July 2014

they encountered the attendants and those that said they would be in attendance and decided this is not an event they want to be a part of, so they don’t RSVP.

I believe that there are those of you reading this that have the same sentiment I used to have. If that’s you, listen to me -- don’t judge Her too harshly. She’s NOT what WE’VE done…She has the sentiments of Her betrothed which states, “Come to Me all of you that are worn down and tired and I will provide rest for your souls.”

Remember the church -- the look, the feel, the sound? The steeple topped by a cross that could be seen from miles, letting everyone know that this is the place of refuge, restoration, and refreshing. The stained glass windows, kept those in and out of the sanctuary, ever mindful of the stages of a suffering savior who was the satisfying sacrifice for our sins! Remember? The sacred songs sung from the soul of the saints with such splendor. The saints shouted and danced, rejoicing over the reconciliation of souls once lost now found – blind but now they can see? The Word of God preached with passion and power, confidence and conviction that gave the listener the ability to love and live for God which denoted loving and living for each other. Remember?

I firmly believe that the day is upon us now when many are looking for Her to be in that state again…but She won’t be. For there is arising a leadership without the need for titles but, are bringing towels to clean and wash Her; repair, refresh and restore Her! NOT to Her former glory but preparing Her for a future that is greater than Her past! For the prophet declares, that there is a shaking coming that will cause the glory of the latter to be GREATER than that of the former!

I love Her…I’m in love with Her…She’s all I have! Without Her, I never would have found Him and without Him I am nothing. I am confessing that I am having an affair…with The Church. The Renaissance Church of Houston
