United Synagogue communities come together to support homeless shelters Published on United Synagogue (https://www.theus.org.uk) United Synagogue communities come together to support homeless shelters Over the holiday break 80 people from 4 United Synagogue communities volunteered for Project Chesed, in partnership with Tikun, to make food to be sent to homeless shelters. Barnet, Cockfosters & N Southgate, Mill Hill and Muswell Hill United Synagogues all held sessions where participants of all ages made a variety of tasty dishes from shepherd’s pie to lasagne. Once the meals had been cooked, volunteers took them to No Second Night Out, an organisation aimed at ensuring those who find themselves sleeping rough in central London for the first time do not do so again. Barnet and Mill Hill also hosted Rabbi Yosef Solomon of Tikun who discussed the importance of volunteering with participants. Miriam Marson, who co-ordinated the event at Barnet US commented: “Three generations spanning seventy five years came together to cook for the homeless. It was both great fun and more importantly a mitzvah and a very worthwhile think to do. We're already looking forward to doing it again!” Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, said: ‘This is such a wonderful project as people from all ages are able to come together to have fun and perform acts of Chesed for people who really need it. It also provided a platform for our amazing volunteers to learn about the underlying values of Chesed, with some committing to do so on a more regular basis’. Page 1 of 2
