United States Power Squadrons®
Autumn is here and my days are closing. We’ve had what I would say is a
successful year considering where we were this time last year.
I am proud to say all Bridge Offices are full. We lack only an Assistant
Admin Officer to assist Dee Laser and Members at Large. At the October
10th meeting we will be voting a new slate of officers for the next watch
year. Your attendance at this meeting is important to show your support for
these incoming officers.
I truly believe we have the finest slate of officers to guide Long Bay Power
Squadron and keep our Flag flying into the future. This complement of
officers is extremely competent and dedicated and work as a team that you
can be proud of.
A big thank you goes to P/Cdr., Kathryn Byrd for her diligent work and
effort for putting this entire slate together.
When I took office, I mentioned it is time we step out of the box and that we
did. We already have eighteen (18) new members and expecting another two
(2). We have been recognized in the Newspaper, TV station and The Grand
Strand Magazine.
We have been asked by District 26 to put on a Case Study of Long Bay
Squadrons Revitalization Program and Public Relations. This is all due to the efforts of Lt/C Mary Gilliam and the Officers of your squadron.

What more can you ask a finer group of Officers who has brought this Squadron together again.
I would like to remind those who have not submitted their 2017 Merit Mark submissions to do so by Oct.
10th to Lt/C Dave DuBarr. Dave and I will be submitting those recommendations Oct. 14th.
I would like to remind those new members who have not responded to my e-mail concerning being sworn
in at our COW who have not already been sworn in.
Please, let me know if you are planning to attend. This would be an honor and privilege to swear you in at
our COW and the new Bridge.
I ask the other new members to let me know if you are planning to attend so all can be recognized. Thank
you.
BOB
I would like to thank members Carla Booth, Kathryn and Larry Byrd, Joyce DuBarr, Rich
Gienopie, Gary Laser, Rick McCabe and guests Susan, Lane, and Logan Westerlund for
coming out for the Socastee Landing clean-up. The Westerlund’s heard about the clean-up
from one of the press releases sent out by our Secretary and PR guru Mary Gilliam. Thanks
Mary!!
Our September meeting at the Harborside Restaurant was fabulous. Great food, good
attendance (24 members and one guest), and an extremely informative presentation given by
our guest speaker, Johnny Weaver, from the South Carolina Maritime Museum, on the history
and growth of the Wooden Boat Show. Something to keep in mind is all proceeds from the
Wooden Boat Show benefit the South Carolina Maritime Museum. So if you’re looking for a
fun, inexpensive (admission is free), family oriented, entertaining day or weekend make the
short drive to Georgetown October 21 and 22 and support them.
Just a reminder to email your time spent and type of activity for any Long Bay Power
Squadron functions to me to insure you get credit when it comes time for Merit Mark
submission. Times should also include any time spent preparing for a squadron activity. Please
feel free to contact me if you have any questions. My email address is

As your Long Bay “Sunshine Lady”, I would like to send a bit of sunshine to
anyone in our Squadron who could use some cheering up. In order for me to do
this I need your help. Please let me know if you hear of someone in need.

Our next meeting will be a Bridge meeting on Tuesday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the
Victory Baptist Church located at 950 38th Ave N., in Myrtle Beach. Our Bridge meetings
are always open to all members.
The next business meeting will be held at the Famous Toastery, 2005 Oakheart Rd.
(Carolina Forest Blvd.), Myrtle Beach, on Tuesday, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. The

Have you ever seen the Mum's in Bloom?
Add it to your bucket list. Historic New Bern North Carolina is our destination for October's Boating Activity. So now is a good time to drive up. That should wet your appetite to begin to planning for next year. Cruising with a group is always more fun. It helps us all expand our comfort zone and broaden our horizons.
November is the time for our Change of Watch (COW) to your Squadron growing. Also making preparations for a Christmas Regatta. What? Wait, it's 90° outside. Why are we talking about Christmas? Because it will be here before you know it. December 2-3 is on our LBPS Calendar, so start planning. We will need a Cruise Leader, and someone to organize the event. We have entertained many along the AIWW. While collecting for those in need.

BOATING SAFETY = SAFE BOATING
Securing Your Boat for a Hurricane
From the Executive Officer
It’s hurricane season and one thing that goes through our minds is, “Should I stay, or should I go?” But
remember, we must also think about our boats. If you keep your boat in the water, you need to be
prepared for the possibility of a hurricane warning in our area. Boats that stay in the water will be
subjected to high winds, waves, and torrential rain, so they should be stripped of all sails, bimini tops,
bimini frames, and all unnecessary lines, and then sealed as tightly as possible. There is no such thing as
too many lines, nor too many attachment points on the boat. Once the hurricane comes, lines can chafe,
cleats can pull out, pilings can break or pull out, whole docks can collapse, trees can fall down, and ground
anchors can be bent or pulled up. Use every cleat on your boat for as many lines as it can hold, and run
them to as many independent points on land as you can find. Even in small canals and waterways, the
waves get surprisingly large during a hurricane, and the boat will be flung against the mooring lines with
great force.
1. Consider using ground anchors or having your boat hauled out - Check with your insurance
company, as some will haul your boat out for free.
2. Consider wind direction – Sometimes it is possible to predict the direction from which the
strongest winds will come. Look around at nearby boats, especially those that you believe will be
upwind. Do they have unsecured coolers, hatch covers, fishing rods, or anything else that might
come your way? You may want to find a way to correct the situation. It is always better to be
prepared.
3. Consider storm surge – Remember that water can rise 15 feet or more above normal high tide
levels. All lines should be long as possible, led to the most distant points on land that are feasible.
The rules for the use of spring lines and bow and stern lines apply to storm surge tides as well, but
the distances must be larger because the tide might rise higher than normal.
4. If you evacuate, take your insurance policies, contact information, and claim phone numbers with
you.
5. If you stay, keep important documents in a safe easily accessible place.
