As you read this it is almost the end of the year already! Yikes. I believe it is true that the older we get the faster time seems to fly by. Thank you to all the volunteers that staffed the USPS booth at the 2018 Fort Myers Boat Show. There were some challenges, to say the least. The setup on Wednesday before the start of the show on Thursday went fairly smoothly, except the promoter of the show was unable to provide power to the booth that day. Continued on page 2 column 1

Then overnight and in the morning on Thursday it rained, and an awful lot of things got wet (not the Virtual Simulator, thank goodness). It was not until mid-day Thursday that our booth finally had power, and the Virtual Trainer was activated. Throughout the four days of the show there were good crowds, and many stopped at the booth. We had several contacts as a result. So, again, thank you to all the volunteers from all four squadrons, and thank you to our squadron members that devoted their time and “worked” a shift. It is truly appreciated. Please don’t forget our annual Change of Watch celebration which is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Landings. One of our good Samaritan members again anonymously donated funds to pay the fee for the squadron to maintain the membership in the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce. A huge thank you to that person! Every little bit, and not so little bit, sure does help. We have had some good success from our Chamber membership, and we will continue to be active, as best as possible, and certainly we will continue to promote the squadron through and to the other Chamber members and their staff. If you have not already heard, there is a story to be told from the District 22 C&R which was held at Ruskin, FL, at the beginning of November. A total of eight of us went to the C&R on two boats, John Ragone’s and mine. On Thursday we headed north to Ruskin, and we were getting fairly close without having had any problems, as we followed the ICW all the way up. It was a bit windy and that is what caused us to stay “inside”, rather than the route outside in the gulf. Continued in next column →

Immediately after going under the “famous” bridge and into Tampa Bay, John lost an engine. After a look-see, he realized he lost a serpentine belt and the pully that maintains the tension on the belt (it broke off and was laying on the engine compartment floor). We stayed together and he limped into the Little Harbor Marina and, despite the now increased wind factor, John was able to slip his boat into the appropriate dock area using his one operative engine. Way to go John! Sometimes good fortune falls to us when we are least expecting it. John went to the ship store the next morning, explained the problem, and the people there made the call to the parts supplier. They informed John the parts were not in stock but would be available Monday, and would be delivered Monday afternoon, installed and he would be set to depart then. Not good news, for sure. However, an hour later the folks at the ships store called John and explained another customer, with exactly the same engine, had ordered many parts, among those were parts that John’s boat needed. He explained the other customer did not need his boat back in the water until mid-week of the next week and therefore they would take from those parts those that John needed and replace them when the order arrived on Monday. John’s boat was repaired Friday afternoon and set to depart Saturday, which was right on the schedule that had been set. On Saturday we departed the marina and, following instructions went to find the fuel dock. They had provided instructions but the instructions were, to say the least, faulty. We almost went aground several times. Finally, after a phone call back to the ship’s store, we found the fuel dock. Continued on page 3 top of column 1

It was a nice long dock but, the marina only had one fuel pump. So, we ended up killing a lot of time while either getting or waiting to get fuel. Finally, we were on the way. Tampa Bay was even more of a challenge on Saturday, due to some stiff winds. It took a while to get across it and we worked our way south. We fought some serious winds all the way back that day. When we entered Charlotte Harbor, my boat lost an engine! My first indication was a loss of power steering. I checked the temperature gauge and saw it was starting to climb so I immediately cut the engine. I needed a place to stop and tie up and have a look-see, and John suggested the Boca Grande Marina. We pulled in there and tied up and I discovered I too had lost a serpentine belt on one engine. Traveling with me was Mike and Jane Aube, and their cousin, Jan. Jan said it is too bad it is too late to find a belt somewhere because if we could have, I know how to change it out. Continued on page 4 bottom of column 1

Shipmates As a new season gets underway, we are trying to implement a program to welcome new members. We are going to call it "Shipmates". When we receive a new membership application I will be asking a current member to contact the new member so that they feel welcomed and not out of place. This will be an easy task involving basic human kindness and consideration.

New members need to feel included in our events so that they'll want to continue their membership. They probably would like to hear about things that we do and reasons why you enjoy the squadron. Planning to meet them at a C&R or membership meeting and introducing them to others is a great start for a "shipmate".

We are not looking for any formal commitment or time allotment and this is something you could do via email or phone very easily.

If the Shipmate Program is something, you'd like to help with please let me know. My email is [email protected]. Otherwise, I will be contacting some of you to join me in welcoming new members and becoming a "Shipmate" with a new member. ▄

The District22 events at the C&R were interesting and many had fun with the things that were planned and set up for all who wished to participate. The dinners were good and the folks from all the squadrons were a good group of people. We all need to remember P/C Ron Terciak in our prayers. He is fighting the serious and major health challenges with all he has got, and is not giving up. I believe immediately after Thanksgiving it is fair to say he is entering phase two (my words) where medications change and escalate and, overall, things will get a bit more intense. GET BETTER RON!!! As of the writing of this column, we are all set for our Squadron’s 2018 Annual Meeting. We will be at Shell Point, in the same two areas that we “tried out” in April. The “hard opening” of the Crystal Dining Room was supposed to be in time for Thanksgiving, but that didn’t happen. Now, it is scheduled for December 4th. All believe we will be okay with our meeting scheduled for December 12th. I encourage all members to please try your best to make this meeting as it is an important business meeting that includes the election of members to all elective positions (thank you to the Nominations Committee for their tireless efforts in completing a full slate for presentation at the meeting), as well as providing a financial picture of the squadron, and seeking Membership approval of the projected squadron budget for 2019. Please remember to let our squadron Administrative Officer, Nancy Chambers ([email protected]), know if you plan to attend, how many in your group and whether you will be having dinner or just attending the business meeting. May your holidays be joyous, and your new year prosperous, healthy and wonderful! Be Safe. Be Active. --Bill Behrens Commander ▄

When I told Jan I carried a spare serpentine belt and the appropriate tools, his eyes light up. I retrieved the belt and tools and he immediately jumped into the engine compartment and got to work. As I mentioned earlier with John’s boat and the parts needed, sometimes good fortune falls to us when we are least expecting it. It fell to us again! It took a couple of calls to my mechanic for pointers and clarifications, regarding the removal of hoses and clamps and protective bars, and we (mostly Jan) threaded the route of the new belt by looking at the other engine, and Jan was able to get it done. When I started the engine it ran fine, the oil pressure and temperature were where they needed to be, and we were again operational. We (both John’s boat and mine) got out of the marina and headed home, following the ICW while also continuing to deal with some stiff winds and total darkness (no moon). When we got to the area of Marker 101, I became disoriented for a while, and we worked our way through that and finally (!!!) made it to the marina, where I keep my boat, late Saturday night. Overall, the bottom line is we had a safe trip, and it was an adventure to say the least, but it was also a very good learning experience, on several levels, and I would not trade it for anything! Lots of good news for our squadron from the National and District levels of USPS. Arguably the highest award that USPS gives is the Charles Chapman Award for Excellence in Teaching. Squadrons make nominations to the District and each District then selects a nominee with three national winners to be selected at the National Conference in February. This year, District 22’s nominee is our own squadron’s ASEO (and past Commander, past SEO, and soon-to-be Executive Officer, Charlie Richardson). Many of us have had the privilege of being Charlie’s students in ABC and Piloting and while we all wish him well at the national level, it is a tremendous accomplishment to be recognized by the District. The students whose posters took 1st, 2ndand 3rd in the 6-8 and 9-11 age groups at the Squadron level went on to compete at the District level where all won prizes and the top posters in each category then went on to the National level where they were judged at the Governing Board meeting in August. Chanson Peacock won third prize at the National Level. On October 30, Cdr. Behrens and I went to AFCAAM in Dunbar to present the awards to Chanson as well as Marbella Moran, Genesis Torres, Anabel Estrada and Malik Williams. Finally, back on the local level, we have received approval to continue to offer our outstanding Local Waters class, regularly taught by Bob Johnson. We will be offering the class on December 1, so if you are a newer member and have not yet taken it, please sign up ASAP. Also, if you have friends who are new to boating in this year, let them know about this course. We’ll also be offering ABC in December (8-15), so tell your friends. Continued in next column →

And, in January we’ll start the new version of Seamanship, called Boat Handling, beginning on Jan. 7, with Piloting also starting in January. Please let me know ([email protected]) ASAP if you are interested in one or both of these courses. ▄

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ▲

Amazon Smile

Hello Everyone, the retailer, AMAZON, has a method by which they contribute to charitable organizations for any and all purchases you make with them.

Our squadron is an official charitable organization and if you take a few minutes and set this up Amazon will contribute .5% of the purchase price to our squadron.

They tie your setup to your login name and password. For the initial setup, and afterwards each time you login to Amazon. use the following: www.Smile.Amazon.com

Basically, you login to www.smile.amazon.com, follow the prompts to select your charitable organization (select San Carlos Bat Sail & Power Squadron) and when finished it will be completed and will apply each time you login to www.Smile.Amazon.com.

Near the top of your screen, when logged into Amazon, you will see a notation “Supporting: United States Power Squadrons”. If you click on it you will see Fort Myers Beach under United States Power Squadron (which designates our squadron receives the donations). Our treasurer is registered with Amazon on behalf of our squadron.

Also, please share this information with friends and relatives. If they do the same thing by selecting our squadron and logging into the “smile.amazon” address this could be a meaningful source for some “extra” income for the squadron. Thank you, Bill Behrens ■

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class? The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
