A big THANK YOU, John! District 22’s Spring Conference in Punta Gorda on Saturday, April 14, 2018 was attended by eight (8) of our squadron members. A big THANK YOU to each of them. The preceding District 22 Commander’s Meeting (on the Friday before the Conference) was very informative and, for the next Commander’s Meeting (in the fall), all Squadron Bridge Officers will be invited to attend and participate with the Commanders. This could very well be an extremely good addition to the meeting with fresh new ideas and thoughts to be added to the discussions. At the Conference our squadron received several awards. They are: From District 22: 1st PLACE (in the District)

The Anna Maria Island “SHIPPING OVER”

Barbara Cartwright, a USPS member, operates “Anchored Stitches Embroidery” in Port Charlotte. The reason I mention this is she will put the new “America’s Boating Club” logo on your polo shirts for $6.50 each. Her contact information is (941) 743-4770, [email protected]. She is very reasonable in price and very accommodating. Ron and I both brought polo shirts and she put the “America’s Boating Club” logo on them while we were at the Conference. The Monthly Membership Meeting in April at Shell Point was a big and positive hit. There were 36 people in attendance and for dinner we had a choice of Italian food in a buffet, or Italian food cooked while we waited or, third choice, a roast beef platter. Everyone commented on how good, tasty and plentiful the food was. For dinner we were seated in the Crystal Room behind some semi-partitions and enjoyed lots of camaraderie.

Our Vessel Safety Check program is rolling right along and at press time we were third in the district. The squadron placed third at the D-22 Spring Conference in Punta Gorda for having the third largest percent increase in VSC’s from the previous year. Thank you to all our inspectors and those of you who had their boats inspected. We had a wonderful turnout for our April “C&R with 39 members and 10 boats meeting for lunch at the Nauti Turtle on Fort Myers Beach. In May, we will be off to Palm Island for a three-day cruise. Please don’t forget that if you are headed north this summer and are in a boating area to look to see if there is a United States Power Squadron unit in your area and join in their summer activities. ■

Have you checked out "America's Boating Channel"? USPS has worked with Towboat US to create a series of short videos (From under a minute up to 8-10 minutes) on a wide range of boating topics. You can get quick refreshers on Rules of the Road, learn how to program and use an MMSI, and how to stop a PWC. Available boating skills videos include all of the following topics: • • Planning Ahead • Vessel Inspection • Preparing for Departure • Departing • Steering Basics • Stopping and Holding Position • Pivot Turn • Getting on Plane • Maneuvering on Plane • Stopping a Boat on Plane • Anchoring a Boat • Man Overboard Many topics are also available. Check out the website http://americasboatingchannel.com Also, if you haven’t checked lately, you might want to visit the USPS Education site to identify lots of useful apps for boaters. At https://www.usps.org/index.php/departments/13000/13000-apps-for-boatersyou’ll find dozens of available apps—some are free, others not, some for IOS, others for Android, some for tablets, others for phones, others for computers. Take a look! ■

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ▲

There's Bowditch Point on Fort Myers Beach and the imaginary Bowditch Bay in USPS classes but do you know about the brilliant mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch? He was born on Salem, MA on March 26, 1773. At the age of ten he ended his formal education and went to work in his father's cooperage. At the age of 12 he was indentured as a bookkeeping apprentice to a ship's chandler and between 1795 and 1799 he took several voyages to the West Indies and Europe. Along the way he studied current navigation tables and took calculations himself. Continued page 14 column 2

Amazon Smile

Hello Everyone,

The retailer, AMAZON, has a method by which they contribute to charitable organizations for any and all purchases you make with them.

Our squadron is an official charitable organization and if you take a few minutes and set this up Amazon will contribute .5% of the purchase price to our squadron.

They tie your setup to your login name and password. For the initial setup, and afterwards each time you login to Amazon. use the following: www.Smile.Amazon.com

Basically, you login to www.smile.amazon.com, follow the prompts to select your charitable organization (select San Carlos Bat Sail & Power Squadron) and when finished it will be completed and will apply each time you login to www.Smile.Amazon.com.

Near the top of your screen, when logged into Amazon, you will see a notation “Supporting: United States Power Squadrons”. If you click on it you will see Fort Myers Beach under United States Power Squadron (which designates our squadron receives the donations). Our treasurer is registered with Amazon on behalf of our squadron.

Also, please share this information with friends and relatives. If they do the same thing by selecting our squadron and logging into the “smile.amazon” address this could be a meaningful source for some “extra” income for the squadron. Thank you, Bill Behrens

Our member Chap Vail, a Coast Guard Licensed Captain and experienced emergency team coordinator and responder for many years, is and has been our squadron’s liaison person to the Lee County Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT).

As an active member of MERT, he coordinates various activities (training and emergency response to actual emergencies) and those activities include responses to both on the water and on land situations. Members of MERT include the various local police departments, local fire department rescue groups, Lee County Sheriff’s Office (including their air wing,), and “certified” volunteers. Efforts and activities are, many times, in conjunction with the Coast Guard.

If this is something you think may be of interest to you, a meeting will be scheduled during which information will be presented for you, questions answered and examples of past situations in which MERT became involved will be described.

It would be at the to-be-scheduled meeting you would decide if this is something to which you would be willing to commit and join the response team.

Participation in this activity would certainly qualify for our squadron’s “Community Service” portion of our overall manifest.

If you wish to attend the to-be-scheduled short meeting to learn more about our squadron’s proposed participation in MERT, please let Cdr. Bill Behrens know via email at [email protected]. ■

National Safe Boating Week May 19-25, 2018

National Safe Boating Week is May 19-25. Although boat safety is something on which we should focus all year, this week reminds us to pay particular attention to our squadron mission of safe boating. According to the National Safe Boating Council

· 80% of boat deaths are due to drowning · 83% of victims were not wearing a life jacket · 2/3 of drowning victims are good swimmers · 77% deaths occurred on boats where the operator had no boating safety instruction · Florida ranks first in the US in reported boating deaths (70) and reported boating accidents (684).

What can you do to make sure you aren’t a statistic? First of all, make sure your boat has a current vessel safety inspection (VSC). These free inspections will insure that your boat has key safety features like life vests, navigation lights, visual distress signals, sound producing devices, navigation rules, and fire extinguishers. Second, consider improving your boating skills by taking one or more of our boating education classes or seminars. Finally, check out the new Safe Boating website at www.BoatLive365.org. Here’s to safe boating! ■

Bowditch is considered the father of modern navigation. He first published "The New American Practical Navigator" in 1802 and it is still carried aboard every commissioned U.S. Naval vessel. You can purchase the latest addition on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. As it is published by the U.S. government you can also download it for free. Often it is just referred to as "Bowditch". Nathaniel's life was very interesting and successful. After his days at sea he had a successful career in the insurance business, becoming one of its first actuaries. In 1823 when he moved from Salem to Boston he had with him 2,500 books, 100 maps and 29 volumes of his own writings. What is really fascinating, though, is the fact that he taught himself so much after his schooling stopped at ten. As a teenager would you have the tenacity to teach yourself algebra and calculus? Then learn French and Latin so that you could study works of great European scholars? Would you study thousands of calculations to see if they are correct? Modern navigation is so easy we forget that our tools for it are based on knowledge gained over thousands of years. Next time you punch a couple of waypoints in your GPS think about how that information was obtained. Think about people like Nathaniel Bowditch or how the first compass was made and if you want to learn more......just Google it! ■

After dinner we walked down a hallway to the Shell Point Social Center for our business meeting. The meeting room is set up with all the audio and visual equipment a group would want. Our guest speaker was Wayne Swanson, a Shell Point resident, who spoke to the long history and numerous activities of the Masters Tournament. He has been to many, many of the Masters Tournaments and does a lot behind the scenes. His knowledge of the facts of the Masters Tournaments was astounding. A very enjoyable and interesting presentation. After the guest speaker concluded his presentation our members were asked about their impression of the dinner and meeting facilities we were using at Shell Point, and all were extremely favorable of the location as a meeting location for future Monthly Membership meetings. This will be further discussed at the next Executive Committee meeting. A big THANK YOU to P/C Ron Terciak for coordinating the various aspects of our dinner meeting with the managers at Shell Point. Members are reminded our squadron now has several child-size personal floatation devices (life vests) at the office/classroom and they are available for those temporarily needing one. Members can contact any of the Bridge Officers to obtain a child-size PFD. A big THANK YOU to Marianne Ponzio and Judy Berger (and Treasurer Ken Morris) for completing the 2018 Squadron audit. Our overnight C&R to Palm Island, as I am writing this column, is right around the corner.

Continued in next column →

I will say all that are participating are really looking forward to the boat ride getting there and the fun times interacting with all in our group while there. The District 22 C&R is at the beginning of November, 2018, and will be at the Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin, FL. As this C&R is usually at the South Seas Resort in Captiva, attending this will provide many of us a longer-distance boating adventure and fun and activities mixing with other members in District 22. Information has been sent to all on this and I would suggest, if possible, you truly make an effort to attend this event. Be Safe! Be Active! --Bill Behrens Commander ■

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
