In the American federalist system, citizens are usually

subject to three levels of government:

federal, state, and local. The local

government's duties are commonly split

between county and municipal

governments. In almost all cases,

executive and legislative officials are elected by a plurality

vote of citizens by district. There is no

proportional representation at the federal level, and it is

very rare at lower levels.

The federal government is composed of three branches:

JudicialThe Supreme Court and lower federal

courts, whose judges are appointed by the president with Senate

approval, interpret laws and overturn

those they find unconstitutional.

LegislativeThe bicameral Congress,

made up of the Senate and the House of

Representatives, makes federal law, declares war, approves treaties, has the

power of the purse, and has the power of impeachment,

by which it can remove sitting members of the

government

ExecutiveThe president is the

commander-in-chief of the military, can veto legislative bills before

they become law (subject to

Congressional override), and appoints

the members of the Cabinet (subject to

Senate approval) and other officers, who

administer and enforce federal laws and

policies.

The Amish are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships, closely

related to but distinct from Mennonite churches, with whom they share Swiss

Anabaptist origins. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and

reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology. The history of the Amish church began with a schism in

Switzerland within a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann. Those who followed Ammann

became known as Amish.

Page 9: United States of America (USA)

Amish church membership begins with baptism, usually between the ages of 16 and 25. Church districts

average between 20 and 40 families, and worship services are

held every other Sunday in a member's home. The district is led by a bishop and several ministers

and deacons. The rules of the church, must be observed by

every member and cover most aspects of day-to-day living,

including prohibitions or limitations on the use of power-line electricity, telephones, and

automobiles, as well as regulations on clothing. Most Amish do not buy commercial insurance or participate in Social Security.

Amish church members practice nonresistance and will not perform

any type of military service.

Mormons are a religious and cultural group related

to Mormonism, the principal branch of the Latter Day

Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity,

which began with the visions of Joseph Smith in upstate New York during

the 1820s. Today Mormons are understood to be

members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The

center of Mormon cultural influence is in Utah, and North America has more Mormons than any other

continent, though the majority of Mormons live outside the United States.

Page 12: United States of America (USA)

Mormons dedicate large amounts of time and resources to serving in their church, and many

young Mormons choose to serve a full-time proselytizing mission. Mormons have a health code that eschews alcoholic beverages, tobacco, coffee,

tea, and other addictive substances. They tend to be very family-oriented, and have strong connections

across generations and with extended family, reflective of their belief that families can be sealed

together beyond death and throughout eternity. Mormons also have a strict law of chastity, requiring abstention from sexual relations outside of marriage

and strict fidelity within marriage.

Page 13: United States of America (USA)

Mormons self-identify as Christian, though some of

their beliefs differ from mainstream Christianity. Mormons believe in the Bible, as well as other books

of scripture, such as the Book of Mormon. They believe that returning to God requires following the

example of Jesus Christ, and accepting his atonement through ordinances such as baptism. They believe that Christ's church was restored through Joseph

Smith, and is guided by living prophets and apostles. Central to Mormon faith is the belief that God speaks

to his children and answers their prayers.

Jehovah's WitnessesJehovah's Witnesses

Page 15: United States of America (USA)

Jehovah's Witnesses is a millenarian restorationist Christian denomination with nontrinitarian beliefs distinct from mainstream Christianity. They are directed by the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, a group of elders in

Brooklyn, New York, that establishes all doctrines. Jehovah's

Witnesses' beliefs are based on their interpretations of the Bible and they prefer to use their own

translation, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.

They believe that the destruction of the present world system at

Armageddon is imminent, and that the establishment of God's kingdom on earth is the only solution for all

problems faced by humanity.

Page 16: United States of America (USA)

Jehovah's Witnesses are best known for their door-to-door preaching, distributing literature, and refusing military service and blood transfusions. They reject Trinitarianism, inherent immortality of the soul, and

hellfire, which they consider to be unscriptural doctrines. They do not observe Christmas, Easter,

birthdays, or other holidays and customs they consider to have pagan origins incompatible with

Christianity.

Page 19: United States of America (USA)

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated

primarily in the United States and Canada, as a day

of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. It is

celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on

the second Monday of October in Canada. Thanksgiving has its

historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.

HalloweHalloweenen

Page 21: United States of America (USA)

Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-

workers. However, some areas hold large community

events. Parties and other events may be planned on

October 31 or in the weekends before and after

this date. Adults may celebrate by watching horror films, holding

costume parties or creating haunted houses or

graveyards.

Many children dress up in fancy costumes and visit

other homes in the neighborhood. At each house, they demand

sweets, snacks or a small gift. If they do not get this, they threaten to do some harm to the inhabitants of

the house. This is known as playing 'trick-or-treat' and is

supposed to happen in a friendly spirit, with no nasty or mean tricks being carried

out.
