DESCRIPTION 1 1/2-story frame dwelling; modified L-plan with cypress beams on 5-foot high brick piers; double-hipped roof has intersecting gables on south and east elevations; wood 1/1 windows; l-story, 5-bay porch extends from east e l l and wraps around the southeast corner; porch roof is supported by Ionic columns resting on square brick piers; A of the 5 bays of the porch contain square wood balusters; porch ceiling is divided into panels by decorative heavy molding; single door primary entrance with transom on east elevation; two secondary entrances, both with transoms, also open onto the porch; large hipped dormer on north elevation, over canted box bay, and gabled dormer on east facade with 21/1 l i g h t , fixed window; gable end feature pent roofs and imbricated shingles; interior brick chimney.

SIGNIFICANCE The Lula J. Doughty House is an excellent example of an elaborate Queen Anne influenced cottage in the Houston Heights. I t i s highly i l l u s t r a t i v e of the upper, middle-class suburban homes in the area. The high brick piers, Ionic columns, and box bay make this houses an unusual example of the similar small cottages found in the Heights. Lula J. Doughty was the principal of Beauchamp Springs School when she purchased this home in 1909.
