The wel l -?reserved church complex i s a c t u a l l y made up of two s e p a r a t e c o n s t r u c t i o n s . F i r s t , i n 1883, P h i l a d e i p h i a a r c h i t e c t Isaac P u r s e l l des igned t h e towered s a n d s t o n e church . The P a r i s h House w a s d e s i g n e d i n 1927 by t h e C h a r l e s t o n , W.Va., f i r m of Warne, Tucker , S i l l i n g & Hutchison. J o h n ' s Church, b u i l t i n 1884-90, and c o n s e c r a t e d on J u n e 9 , 1901, i s a modif ied c r u c i f o r m p l a n c o n s t r u c t e d of random-coursed rough s a n d s t o n e w i t h banding o f smooth-faced s a n d s t o n e . The heavy Romanesque c o r n e r b e l l tower i s i n p l e a s i n g c o n t r a s t w i t h t h e c h u r c h ' s G o t h i c windows and r o o f l i n e . The c o r n e r b u t t r e s s i n g , po in ted a r c h windows and d o o r s , a n d r a i s e d e n t r a n c e under t h e b e l l tower a l l c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e G o t h i c d e s i g n of S t . J o h n ' s . I n keep ing w i t h t h e V i c t o r i a n s t y l e , t h e s l a t e roof i s d e c o r a t e d w i t h p a t t e r n e d bands o f hexagonal s l a t e s .

The most o u t s t a n d i n g i n t e r i o r f e a t u r e o f S t . J o h n ' s Church i s t h e f i n e wooden r i b - v a u l t e d c e i l i n g (open- t russ roof s t r u c t u r e ) . The open- t russ work i s punc tua ted by l a r g e e x p a n s e s o f tongue-and-groove wood c o n s t r u c t i o n . The Goth ic po in ted a r c h i s used e x t e n s i v e l y t h r o u g h o u t t h e i n t e r i o r r e p e a t i n g t h e shape of t h e c h u r c h ' s s t a i n e d - g l a s s windows. The e a r l y memorial windows, des igned by C h a r l e s Hogeman of New J e r s e y , are a combina t ion of p a i n t e d and s t a i n e d g l a s s . They a r e r i c h i n c o l o u r and V i c t o r i a n d e t a i l . L a t e r , i n t h e 1 9 7 0 1 s , new windows were i n s t a l l e d i n t h e Memorial Chapel . O t h e r G o t h i c f e a t u r e s i n c l u d e wooden t r a c e r y around t h e organ l o f t and wooden G o t h i c a l t a r s and ra i ls i n bo th t h e Nemorial Chapel and t h e main church. The o r i g i n a l l i g h t i n g f i x t u r e s were r e p l a c e d i n t h e e a r l y p a r t o f t h i s c e n t u r y . Some n o t a b l e p i e c e s o f c h u r c h f u r n i t u r e a r e a n eagle-shaped memorial l e c t u r n t o Alexander Q u a r r i e r , and a n 1830 a l t a r t a b l e which i s t h e o n l y remnant o f t h e p r e v i o u s S t . J o h n ' s church.

The P a r i s h House wings , begun i n 1928, r e f l e c t a l a t e r a r c h i t e c t u r a l t r e a t m e n t b u t are o u t s t a n d i n g i n t h e i r a t t e m p t t o r e f l e c t and m a i n t a i n t h e a r c h i t e c t u r a l i n t e g r i t y of P u r s e l l ' s d e s i g n . The t a l l c o r n e r tower , i n t h e words o f Myers, "has a s t a i r t u r r e t and i s consp icuous f o r t h e s t o n e s p i r e and f o u r c o r b e l l e d s t o n e s p i r e l e t s t h a t g i v e i t a r a t h e r top-heavy and ponderous appearance . The r o o f s are e x t r e m e l y s t e e p . " S t . J o h n ' s i s t h e o n l y church i n C h a r l e s t o n w i t h a s t o n e b e l f r y and s p i r e .

The c h u r c h and a d d i t i o n s are i n e x c e l l e n t r e p a i r . Although t h e church was o r i g i n a l l y des igned t o be b u i l t i n b r i c k , i t is n e v e r t h e l e s s a f i n e example o f V i c t o r i a n G o t h i c a r c h i t e c t u r e . The i n t e g r i t y of t h e b u i l d i n g h a s been main ta ined and few a l t e r a t i o n s have been made. The c h u r c h ' s p r o p o r t i o n s a r e good and t h e c r a f t m a n s h i p i s e x c e l l e n t . S t . J o h n ' s h a s been recorded by t h e H i s t o r i c American B u i l d i n g s Survey (HABS), WV-215, w i t h pho tographs (1979) and d a t a (1981) .

S t . J o h n ' s Church was des igned by a prominent P h i l a d e l p h i a a r c h i t e c t I s a a c P u r s e l l (1853-1910). When S t . J o h n ' s was c o n s t r u c t e d , i t was one o f t h e c h o i c e s t b u i l d i n g s i n C h a r l e s t o n . The church a l s o o c c u p i e s a very prominent s treet c o r n e r i n downtown C h a r l e s t o n , a t Broad S t r e e t and Q u a r r i e r S t r e e t .

S t . J o h n ' s i s one o f two known West V i r g i n i a churches d e s i g n e d by P u r s e l l . The a l t a r a r e a r e t a i n s most of i t s o r i g i n a l f l o o r t i l e s , and t h e c h o i r s t a l l s are c u r r e n t l y be ing r e s t o r e d t o t h e a r e a . However, p a i n t e d G o t h i c b o r d e r s , which once d e c o r a t e d t h e walls on e i t h e r s i d e o f t h e a l t a r , have been p a i n t e d o v e r i n r e c e n t y e a r s . J o h n ' s p a r i s h , o r i g i n a l l y c a l l e d Kanawha P a r i s h , was an e a r l y l e a d e r i n t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of a s e p a r a t e d i o c e s e f o r w e s t e r n V i r g i n i a . Fo l lowing c r e a t i o n of t h e S t a t e of West V i r g i n i a d u r i n g t h e C i v i l War ( 1 8 6 3 ) , t h e movement a d v o c a t i n g a new d i o c e s e , s e p a r a t e from t h e V i r g i n i a d i o c e s e , ga ined momentum. T h i s cu lmina ted i n t h e c r e a t i o n of a new West V i r g i n i a Diocese , which was approved by t h e c h u r c h e s ' Genera l Convent ion i n Boston i n 1877. The d i o c e s e ' s Pr imary Convent ion m e t a t S t . J o h n ' s i n C h a r l e s t o n on December 5 , 1877. Prominence o f S t . J o h n ' s is ev idenced by t h e Diocesan Convent ion of 1890, which m e t i n t h e p r e s e n t b u i l d i n g . Alexander T. L a i d l e y , a prominent member of S t . J o h n ' s E p i s c o p a l Church, one of West V i r g i n i a ' s most d i s t i n g u i s h e d c h u r c h h i s t o r i e s , r e c o r d s t h e names of many C h a r l e s t o n l u m i n a r i e s . Among t h e s e prominent church members a r e Rev. James C r a i k , D.D., LL.D., whose f a t h e r was George Wash ing ton ' s s e c r e t a r y d u r i n g t h e p r e s i d e n t ' s second t e rm, and whose g r a n d f a t h e r was D r . James C r a i k , p e r s o n a l p h y s i c i a n t o George Washington; George S. P a t t o n , a C o n f e d e r a t e b r i g a d i e r g e n e r a l and g r a n d f a t h e r o f World War I1 g e n e r a l George S. P a t t o n ; D r . S p i c e r P a t r i c k , a noted C h a r l e s t o n businessman; and Judge George W. Summers. Whi le t h e s e i m p o r t a n t p a r i s h o n e r s were n o t a s s o c i a t e d w i t h t h e p r e s e n t b u i l d i n g , a n o t h e r , Alexander T. L a i d l e y (1807-1895), was.

Alexander T. L a i d l e y , writes J e f f e r d s , "was a most i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f S t . J o h n ' s P a r i s h from h i s e l e c t i o n t o t h e Ves t ry i n 1854 u n t i l h i s dea th . " C i t e d no less t h a n 21 times i n t h e c h u r c h h i s t o r y , L a i d l e y se rved a s church warden, r e g i s t r a r , and t r e a s u r e r f o r l o n g p e r i o d s of t i m e . L a i d l e y ' s v e s t r y m i n u t e s p rov ide f a s c i n a t i n g l a t e 19 th -cen tu ry g l i m p s e s of church , p a r i s h , and community l i f e . Fol lowing c o n s t r u c t i o n o f t h e p r e s e n t b u i l d i n g , L a i d l e y renewed h i s s e r v i c e t o t h e church w i t h e l e c t i o n t o t h e v e s t r y i n 1885. Subsequent t o s e r v i c e a s warden, 1888-92, La id ley was e l e c t e d Honorary Vestryman f o r L i f e i n 1892.
