Having reached this milestone of serving the people of Moore County for 50 years, we look back with a sense of pride in caring for the community; and we look forward with strength and resiliency as we navigate the changing demography of this place we call home. Thank you for the role you have played in our success.

We will continue working to ensure hope, opportunity, and resolution through the programs we support with grant dollars you have invested with United Way of Moore County. Our mission statement, “Working to advance the common good of the lives in our communities” speaks directly to the services and programs afforded to the families, individuals, and children of Moore County.

Your investment in United Way enables us, through partnerships we support, to provide assistance where it is needed most. Please continue to invest in our community through United Way. There are many programs out there depending on your support of United Way: special programs offering assistance in times of crisis, education enhancement, pathways to family success and healthier living. From humble beginnings in March of 1968, our local United Way has invested millions of dollars back into our communities, families and individuals here at home. EDUCATION ~

As one of the three tenets of a good life, The United Way of Moore County’s focus on education is an effort to ensure childhood success as it relates to early grade reading, and school readiness. Our support of education partners helps provide our children with necessary supports and solutions from birth through kindergarten and elementary school, from middle school through high school and on to college and career readiness.

INCOME ~

Our income / financial stability goals are to help our families improve their socio-economic status thereby improving their ability to support and maintain themselves. The ability of a family to change their financial status can have a positive impact by increasing access to quality healthcare, improving housing options, and broadening educational opportunities.

HEALTH ~

Our health goal is for individuals and families to improve their health. United Way of Moore County supports programs that help provide access to health care and health insurance, supporting those working to create healthy communities by communicating the need to increase physical activity, access healthy food, and programs that insure children and families have the opportunity for a healthy start.

“If there’s one person that I strive to be like, it’s Maren H. Lowrey. I met Maren in the winter of my freshman year, when she became my mentor. Since then Maren has taught me many key life skills and has always supported things I’ve wanted to do. Not only is Maren my mentor, she’s also my friend. - Najjiya

When Yanet, an ESL student, began working with her tutor, Mary Beth, in the fall of 2015, she had very little confidence. Since then, Yanet has come up several grade levels, her self-confidence has increased and she is studying to take the test to earn her Cosmetology license.

In support of school readiness for children, Born Learning Trails give parents, grandparents, informal caregivers and professional child care providers an understanding of child development using “everyday moments” to help children start school ready to succeed. Currently, UWMC supports three born learning trails in Moore County: (1) Nancy Kiser Park in Carthage next to Carthage Elementary School, (2) Rassie Wicker Park in Pinehurst next to the water park, and (3) in Robbins at Milliken Park (541 East Park Avenue).

Your contributions to the 2016 United Way campaign funded the following programs in Moore County in 2017-2018:

• Through Moore County 4-H trained teachers in 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) curriculum supporting 400 students; supported 85 youth members of 4-H, assisted youth with career/employability skills, adult volunteer recruitment and training in leadership for both youth and adults.

• Respite care from the Arc of Moore County providing quality care for the family member with intellectual and other developmental disabilities while giving the primary caregiver short-term relief from their daily caregiving routines.

• Through the American Red Cross, direct financial assistance to individuals and families after a disaster for emergency housing, food, clothing and other immediate needs. Funding also provides training and materials for local disaster team volunteers.

• Structured living environments, job support, and substance abuse recovery programs for men at Bethesda, Incorporated and for women at the Bethany House.

• The establishment of Cub Scout packs serving minority communities as well as leadership scouting programs and learning opportunities for scouts across the county, including 267 STEM-focused merit badges earned.

• Assistance for more than 2,350 victims of domestic violence through our partner, Friend to Friend; including shelter for 65 women and 52 children.

• For low-wealth individuals, legal services (including in-court representation at administrative hearing and court hearings) and other services to help decrease the gap in equal access to justice and the legal system.

• A daily meal for those who are homebound, recovering from illness, or unable to afford food necessary to prepare a routine and nutritious meal for themselves.

• More than 2,400 students and mentors working together to help with drop-out prevention and keeping students in school performing well through Moore Buddies Mentoring and reading programs.

• Through our partnership with Moore County Literacy Council, 5 of their students got a job or a better job, 8 others improved their employability skills, 2 received their GED credentials, 1 became a U.S. citizen, 16 had increased involvement in their children’s educational activities, and all those with 12 or more instructional hours achieved a personal goal they had set.

• Born Learning Trails have been placed in Carthage at Nancy Kiser Park next to Carthage Elementary School, the track at Rassie Wicker Park in Pinehurst, and at Milliken Park in Robbins available for parents and caregivers to make the most out of teaching moments for children.

• Helped to triple the capacity to offer pre-school children in northern Moore County access to early-childhood education at the HOPE Academy-Northern Moore Family Resource Center.

• Reach Out and Read and Encouraging Early Literacy programs preparing Moore County’s youngest children to succeed in school. In 2016 62.4% of Moore County’s children were proficient readers at the end of third grade; only 21.1% of low-income students were proficient. These programs are designed to help close that achievement gap.

• In our partnership with the Salvation Army, emergency rental assistance, utility assistance and emergency shelter is being provided for people in danger of losing those basic needs within a 24-hour period.

• And our partnership with the Sandhills Coalition for Human Care helps prevent those temporary situations from becoming permanent by providing job counseling, food, clothing, and other financial assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families last year.

Sandhills Rotary Club #25530

In a partnership with United Way Worldwide, FamilyWize offers a free discount prescription card to help people have access to more affordable medications. The card is free, has no eligibility requirements, can be printed from the Family-Wize website (www.familywize.org), or can be picked up from the United Way or one of our partner agencies.

Last year, Moore County residents (2,328 people) using the card saw a total savings of $261,211. Remember to thank your pharmacist who accepts the FamilyWize card.
