The Second Sunday of Advent

Welcome to First Worship! We extend a welcome as broad as the outstretched arms of

God, who calls us together to pray, sing, and rejoice in God’s glorious presence.

If you are an old friend, or here for the very first time, we welcome you. Feel free to

bring coffee, snacks, and juice to your seat. Make sure you take a moment before or

after worship to meet those whom you are worshipping with today.

We especially welcome children to worship. We welcome their voices, their hands,

and their feet to be a part of how we all worship God together. Children are also

welcome to use the activity bags to connect with God in this sacred time.

This is a special place for us to be with God, and all these people whom God loves.

Welcome!

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

ADVENT LITANY The Candle of Peace

One: Today, we light the candle for the second Sunday in Advent. This is the

candle of PEACE. As we prepare for the coming of Jesus, we remember

that Jesus is our hope and our peace.

One: Listen to these words from the prophet Isaiah: “For a child has been born

for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is

named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of

Peace.”

One: And from the Gospel of John: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give

to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts

be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

One: Let us pray:

All: Wonderful counselor and mighty God, we are easily distracted by the

things of this world. May our hearts not be troubled and may we not be

afraid. May we seek your peace this week, as we prepare for the

coming of the child born for us. Amen.

SUNG RESPONSE “Light a Candle Bright and Tall”

Light a candle bright and tall

For the Peace we wish to know.

Peace on Earth for great and small

God’s Good News to us bestows.

Shine within our hearts today

Come, O Christ, to us, we pray.

Congregation: We will, with the help of God. Through this act we welcome

these beloved ones into the fellowship of Christ’s church and invite

them to share with us the cost and joy of discipleship. We promise to

receive them as fellow pilgrims on the Christian way, to guide them

by our precepts and example, that all of us may grow in the

knowledge and love of God, according to the measure of the fullness

of Christ. Amen.

*COMMUNION

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.

Amen.

Our Church Covenant

We are banded together as a Christian Church

to maintain the worship of God,

to proclaim the gospel of Christ,

to develop in all people a consciousness of their relations and duties

to God and to each other, and

to inspire them with love for truth, passion for righteousness,

and enthusiasm for service.

To this end we pledge our loyalty to Christ and covenant with each

other

to express God’s spirit in our individual and corporate life;

to live together as Christians and to submit ourselves to the

government of this Church,

working, giving, praying for its increase, its purity, its peace,

and seeking in every way to make it a power

for the building up of the kingdom of God.
