UCIPL POT BEARINGINTRODUCTION:- A bridge structure can be divided into
two main bodies, the superstructures and the substructures, the superstructure bears its own weight and the traffic load, and the substructure bears the load from the super-structure. The transmission media is the “bearing”, one of the most important components of a bridge structure. Pot bearing places an Elastomer disc inside a steel pot and presses the top of the Elastomer disc by using a steel plate, The Elastomer functions like a viscous fluid inside a hydraulic jack and the top steel plate behaves like the piston. Inside the pot the Elastomer is to be laterally restricted, is not able to be compressed, and not able to horizontally lengthen. The bearing can hold substantially high pressure and enable slight rotations under homogeneous compression stress, these above items are the principle of a pot bearing.
COMPOSITION OF POT BEARING & IT’S TYPES:
A Pot bearing mainly consists of the components made of steel plate, Rubber, Teflon, Brass, and Stainless steel. The main components include anchor bolts, upper and lower masonry plates, upper plate, Pot, Piston, Elastomer, brass ring, sliding device, movement gauge, dust skirt, and connecting bolts, as shown in Figure. Pot bearing has three types, the fixed pot bearing, the guided Pot-Cum-PTFE bearing, and the free Pot-Cum-PTFE bearing.

Fixed Pot Bearing:
1. Fixed Pot Bearing consist of Pot, Elastomeric disc (Pad), Sealing ring and Top plate (Piston).
2. Fixed Pot Bearing along With vertical load, Bears and transmits horizontal force in any direction and allow rotation about any axis in horizontal plane without any movement within the same plane.
Free Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing:
1. Free Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing consist of Pot, Elastomeric disc (Pad), Sealing ring, Piston, PTFE, Stainless Steel Sheet and Top plate.
2. Free Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing bears and transmits vertical load and allows movement in any direction in the horizontal plane & allow rotation about any axis in horizontal plane.
Guided Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing:
1. Guided Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing consist of Pot, Elastomeric disc (Pad), Sealing ring, Piston, PTFE, Stainless Steel Sheet and Top plate.
2. Guided Pot-Cum-PTFE Bearing along with vertical load bears & transmits horizontal force in one direction and allows movement perpendicular to that direction and allows rotation about any axis in horizontal plane.
Metallic Guided Bearing:These bearings consists of a sliding assembly with restraint along a desired direction to bear and transmit horizontal force and are capable of allowing movements in the direction perpendicular to the direction of horizontal force. Guided Pin Bearings are capable of allowing rotation only about an axis perpendicular to the plane of sliding. Guided Pin Bearing cannot bears or transmit any Vertical Load.
Pin Bearing:
These bearing consists of a metal pin provided within a metal cylinder to bear & transmit horizontal forces along any direction in the horizontal plane and accommodating the rotation about any axis in Horizontal Plane. Pin bearings cannot bear or transmit any vertical load.

MATERIAL STEEL COMPONENTS: All steel plates conform to Grade B
of IS:2062. Other steel grades can also be supplied, depending on their availability or the project’s specific requirements.
CASTING: The cast steel conform to Grade 280 – 520W or 340 – 570W of IS:1030.
STAINLESS STEEL: The stainless steel conforms to ASTM A240/A240M, Type 316L or approved equivalent. The roughness of the surface in contact with the PTFE, measured in accordance with IRC:83 (PART III) does not exceed an arithmetic mean of 0.25 μm.
PTFE (POLYETRAFLUOROETHYLENE/TEFLON®): The PTFE discs and strips are manufactured from pure unfilled sheets and are chemically etched on one face to improve bonding.
MATERIAL ELASTOMER: The elastomer material for the elastomeric
pad has a hardness of 50 ± 5 IRHD and conforms to IRC:83 (PART II)
INTERNAL SEAL: The internal seal conform to IS:410 and in accordance with clause 927.2.7
ANCHORING SLEEVES: The anchor sleeves conform to Grade B of IS:2062. Other steel grades can also be supplied, depending on the project’s specific requirement
STEEL FINISH: All non working surfaces as well as surface to be in contact with structure shall be suitably prepared by sand/shot blasting to SA 2½ quality as per IS:9954 and all non working surface shall be given suitable protective coating either by painting as per clause 927.3.3. The total dry film thickness of protective coating shall not be less than 160 µm.
