Characteristic Metals Non-Metals

Melting Point Melt at high temperatures. Melt at low temperatures.

Sound Sonorous (they ring when struck)

Do not ring.

Heat Conductivity Conduct heat well. Poor heat conductors.

Electrical Conductivity Good conductors of electricity.

Poor conductors of electricity. (Graphite is an exception.)

Brittleness Metals are flexible (the bend), they are ductile (can be drawn into wires), are malleable (can be hammered into sheets).

When non-metals are solid they break easily.

Surface Texture Metals are shiny. Non-metals are dull.

Magnetism Iron, nickel, and cobalt are magnetic.

Non-metals are not magnetic.

Tensile Strength Most metals are quite strong.

Most non-metals are very weak.

Hardness Metals are usually hard. Non-metals are usually soft.
