Unit 8 A birthday present
About this unit
In this unit, pupils will discuss a pictureabout house repairs. They practise vowelsounds and complete words using differentletters. They read a story about a birthdaypresent and answer questions about it. Theycreate sentences in the simple future tense,and use punctuation.
Lesson one
Lesson aims
Pupils will:
Listening and speaking: Discuss a pictureand ask polite questions; revise vowelsand use vowels to complete words.
Vocabulary: Learn and record new wordsand phrases about a house such as, fixingthe roof, painting the walls, mowing thelawn, weeding the garden, tiling the floor,plastering the wall, cleaning the gutters,fitting in a window pane, plantingflowers.

Starting off
1. Lead a class discussion about houses andgardens. Let pupils name parts of a housesuch as the windows, door, roof, thedifferent rooms of a house and the thingsyou find in a garden such as plants,flowers, soil, weeds, lawn.
2. Write three lists on the board headed:parts of a house, rooms in a house, thingsin a garden. Use the items discussed towrite the lists.

1. Pupils open their WBs at Exercise 4 onpage 21. Read the words and phrases inthe WB. Let them point to the words andthe relevant part of the picture. Starting off
1. Discuss pupils’ birthdays and whatpresents they would like to receive.Revise the months of the year. Have thememory rhyme, How many days?, on achart:30 days has September,April, June and November.All the rest have 31,Except for February alone,Which has but 28 days clear.And 29 in each leap year.
2. What presents would pupils give theirmothers or fathers on their birthdays?Make lists under each heading on theboard.
Reading (Pupil's Book p. 42–44)
1. Pupils open their PB at page 42. Tellthem the story is called: The bestpresent. Ask them to look at the pictures,and say what they think the story isabout.
2. Read the story slowly, stressingimportant points with the correct
intonation. Explain the meaning ofcomplex words. Refer to the glossary andshow them how to use it.
3. Read the story again, encouraging pupilsto follow in the books. Let pupils point tothe words as they read along with you.
4. Discuss the story.Ask pupils questions about the story, forexample. What are the three children inthe story called? How does the storystart? How does it end? Whatsuggestions do each of the children makefor a birthday present?
5. Read the comprehension questions onpage 44. Make sure all pupils understandthe questions. Let pupils work in pairs asthey answer the questions in writing.Move around the classroom and help asrequired.
