UNIT 5
DINOSAURS AND ROBOTS
Name : _________________________________________________ Class: ___________________________________________________

Over time, everybody gets older. This happens not
only to living things but also to buildings and cities.
What is modern now will be considered old in a
few years.
Every fact is located along the Timeline. We live in
the present, what has already happened is
considered the past and what will come is the
future.
We learn about the past studying fossils, for
example, but we can only imagine the future.
Present Future Past
3
1. Draw yourself in the square you have in the middle. Then something that happened in the past in the left square and imagine something that we will have in the future and draw it in the right square.
2. Here you have a Timeline. Using arrows () you must match the drawings with the line as in the example:
PAST PRESENT FUTURE
Present Future Past

ROADS In the past For thousands of years people travelled on land on
horseback, in carts pulled by oxen, or on foot.
There were no proper roads.
The Roman soldiers built good roads. All the roads they built were remarkably straight. The Romans knew that the shortest distance from one place to another is a straight line.
5
In the present Nowadays we have
good roads to
travel by car, bus,
motorbikes, etc
faster and more
comfortably.
3. How do you think roads will be in the future? Draw your idea.
ROADS IN THE FUTURE
4. Read and write:
A long time ago people travelled on land on _____________, in ________________, or ________________. Nowadays we have good roads to travel by _____________, ________________, _______________, etc.

MEANS OF TRANSPORT In the past As we have said, transports have changed along
the years. At the beginning, our ancestors used to go on foot until they found horses a useful transport.
Thanks to the
invention of the wheel, they could start using charts and carry many heavy things.
In the present Nowadays we have many different means of
transport. o If we want to go by land, we can use the bike,
the car or the train, for example.
7
o If we want to go by water, we can use the boat or the submarine.
o If we want to go by air, we can use the plane,
the helicopter, or even the rocket!
In the future We can have an idea of how transports will be. But
we still don’t know which fuel we will use: oil, hydrogen, sun, air?

5. How do you think transports will be in the future? Draw your idea.

6. Write the three ways we can travel nowadays and one example of each. _____________________ : _______________________

MEANS OF COMMUNICATION In the past How could people communicate with each other
without technology?
First was only the oral communication, telling stories. Our ancestors also used the paintings in caves. Indians sent messages with smoke signals too.
When the alphabet was invented and people could write, communication was easier. But not everybody knew how to write and read. That changed when the printing press was invented in 1440.
10
In the present Nowadays we have
many different means of communication. But most of them didn’t exist before the discovery of the electricity.
In the future Even with all that technology, we still write letters
and notes. What do you think we will use to communicate in the future? Will we still use pencils? 7. What kind of technology would you use to
communicate in the following cases:
If I want to communicate with my uncle who lives in Madrid I would use the ________________________________. If I want to communicate with an alien from another planet I would use the _______________________________.

THE GREATEST INVENTIONS
1. The printing press The German Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press around 1440. Printing presses increased the speed with which book copies could be made, and that helped to spread knowledge.
2. The refrigerator The French Charles Tellier invented the refrigerator in 1876. It helps people to keep their food in good conditions, so they don’t need to go to the supermarket every day.
ELECTRICITY CIRCUITS
Learn about electricity circuits as you experiment with batteries, voltages and light bulbs. Try changing the battery in the circuit to make the light bulb glow brighter; increasing the voltage will have this effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnnpLaKsqGU

HOUSES People can live in different types of houses.
8. Compare the following pictures. What things have
changed over the years?
13
9. These are some different houses around the world:
A detached house A bungalow A semi-detached house
A terrace house An igloo A Holland boat A block of flats A wooden house A skyscraper
10. Colour the type of houses that you can find in your community.
11. Answer these questions:
- What type of house do you live in? .........................................................................................................
- How many floors are there in your house? .........................................................................................................
