Use the present perfect to talk about past experiences in your life. Usually you don’t know or say when exactly these things happened.

Present perfect: Other time expressions.

You can use some time expressions with the present perfect.

For example: I’ve been to England once/twice. I’ve never tried French food.

We can also use the present perfect to talk about something that started in the past and continues in the present.

- I have worked for Inacap for five years. I have worked here since 2010.- Richard has been in Canada for six Months. He has been there since December.

We can also use the present perfect to say that something happened a short time ago (Just) or that something happened before you expected (Already) or that something has not happened until now (Yet).

- Are Diane and Paul here? Yes, they’ve just arrived.- Are you hungry? No, I’ve just had dinner. - Is Tom here? No, I’m afraid he’s just gone.- What time are Diane and Paul coming? They’ve already arrived.- Have Diane and Paul arrived yet?- Silvia has bought a new dress, but she hasn’t worn it yet.

Present perfect vs Past simple

We use the past simple to refer to a finished time. With the past simple you usually say the exact time.

- I rode a camel in 2010. - I bought souvenirs the day before I came back to Santiago.- We didn’t stay in a hotel last summer. We stayed in a cabin.- They tried some typical food when they went to India.

We also use the past simple to ask When…? Or What time…?

- When did you buy your computer? - What time did Andy go out?
