True or False Poetry is quite difficult to write and boring to

read. The number of lines and characters in each line is

quite important for good poems as well as rhythm and rhyme.

William Shakespeare is only famous for his plays.According to the time, the correct order of the

poets should be: Shakespeare, Alexander Pope, John Milton, and John Donne.

Romantic poems and nature poems are two styles of English poems.

We have read English poems since Tang Dynasty.Translating poems into other languages can not

only help people to read more but also understand it without losing any spirit.

Special skills in understanding the meaning.

1. A sentence may cover several lines of a poem, so when you read it, try to find out the complete sentence.

eg The tumult of thy mighty harmonies Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone, Sweet though in sadness.

2. Inverted order and ellipsis are often used in poems. eg Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, =Sometime the eye of heaven shines too hot,

When you are old William Keats

when you are old and grey and full of sleepand nodding by the fire, take down this bookand slowly read, and dream of the soft lookyour eyes had once, and of their shadows deep

how man loved your moments of glad graceand loved your beauty with love false or truebut one man loved the pilgrim soul in youand loved the sorrows of your changing face

and bending down beside the glowing barsmurmur, a little sadly, how love fledand paced upon the mountains overheadand hid his face amid a crowd of stars

A Red , Red Rose by Robert FrostO, my Luve’s like a red, red rose, That’s newly sprung in June;O, my Luve’s like a melodie, That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in love am I;And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:And I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only luve, And fare thee weel awhile !And I will come again, my luve, Though it were ten thousand mile.

Page 30: Unit 4 A Garden of Poems

I wandered lonely as a cloud          That floats on high o'er vales and hills,          When all at once I saw a crowd,          A host, of golden daffodils;          Beside the lake, beneath the trees,          Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine          And twinkle on the milky way,          They stretched in never-ending line          Along the margin of a bay:             Ten thousand saw I at a glance,          Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

Daffodils

Page 31: Unit 4 A Garden of Poems

The waves beside them danced; but they          Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:          A poet could not but be gay,          In such a jocund company:          I gazed--and gazed--but little thought          What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie          In vacant or in pensive mood,                                         They flash upon that inward eye          Which is the bliss of solitude;          And then my heart with pleasure fills,          And dances with the daffodils.

Page 32: Unit 4 A Garden of Poems

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

The Road Not TakenRobert Frost

Page 33: Unit 4 A Garden of Poems

And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
