Diseases of the Bone – Osteoporosis

• Osteoporosis – a disease that weakens the bone over time.

• Normally, cells remove old bone, and other cells rebuild new bone. Osteoporosis causes bone-removing cells to remove bone at a rate that is too fast.

• Osteoporosis results in thinner, weaker bones that can break more easily.

Diseases of the Bone – Periosteum The periosteum is a specialized connective

tissue that covers all bones and has the potential to form new bone.

The periosteum plays an important role in the pathogenesis and treatment of osteoporosis.

Help Reduce Osteoporosis• According to the Mayo Clinic, ensure adequate

amounts of calcium in the diet. Calcium comes from:

Low-fat dairy products Dark green leafy vegetables Canned salmon or sardines Soy products Orange juice Calcium-fortified cereals• Ensure adequate amounts of vitamin D in the diet• Get regular exercise
