It is a sunny day. Bob, Sue and their three over 10-year-old daughters are driving to a beach to have a relaxing trip on weekend. Sue sits beside Bob and turns back constantly talking to her daughters. But for Bob, that is so noisy.

Page 4: Unit 3 Gender Differences

He can’t tolerate and shouts out: “Shut up, please.” Then silence. After a moment, Sue says:“ Why?” “Because I’m driving.” Bob says angrily.” “Driving……?”Women begin to whisper.

Page 5: Unit 3 Gender Differences

They don’t know what’s the connection between their conversation and his driving. Meanwhile, Bob doesn’t know how they can open their mouth at the same time but don’t talk about the same topic. So, what’s the problem here?

Page 6: Unit 3 Gender Differences

The answer is: men and women are different. It doesn’t mean who is better or worse, they are just not the same. Scientists, anthropologists and social biologists have known that several decades ago.

Page 7: Unit 3 Gender Differences

However, it is thought in general society that men and women have the exactly same skills and potential. Scientists are trying to prove that men and women are absolutely different. Only by understanding the differences between men and women, we can truly learn from each other to create our common world.

Jackie and Cat are preparing to attend a cocktail party. Cat tries on a new skirt, tries to dress herself up beautifully. She takes out two pairs of shoes, one is blue, the other is golden, and then she asks Jackie a question which all of men are afraid to hear:

Page 10: Unit 3 Gender Differences

"Honey, which pair matches this skirt?" "ah, uh, which pair do you like, Baby?" "Tell me, Jack, which pair is better, blue or golden?" “The golden one." "What’s the problem with the blue one? You don’t like this pair, I paid much for it but you hate it, don’t you? " "If you don’t want to hear my answer, then don’t ask me, Cat!"

Page 11: Unit 3 Gender Differences

Jackie thinks he helped her to solve her problem. But she is so ungrateful. She just complained loudly. In fact ,she has already decided which shoes to wear, and do not want to hear others’ suggestions. She just wants to get recognized that her choice is good.

“Son, do you have something to say?”“Dad , sorry……I want to have the sex change operation.” “Why? For dance?” “No , dad , for myself , for my life. Do you know, I was born mentally a girl……” “You know what, I often asked myself ‘why my son behave like a girl? Is there anything wrong?’ now, I understand.” “Dad , lose a son , then you can’t have a grandson. Won’t you regret?”

“Of course I will. To an ordinary person, this is a problem. “ 传宗接代,祖宗遗训,不孝有三 ,无后为大”… But , the more important thing is to be responsible for your life. You are right. You respect your life and there is no wrong to complete yourself. After all, people can only live for one time. You can dance excellently. Just be honest to your life. I’ll be proud of you no matter you are a son or a daughter.”

Introduction

Page 54: Unit 3 Gender Differences

He’s my lover, but the affection between us isn’t simply romance or brotherly affection. It should be said that we are sworn to live or die together. This attachment includes friend, lover, and companion with tacit understanding( 默契) . He’s a significant person in my life as well as my mentally support. His death is the biggest repentance that I can’t redeem (挽回) .

Page 55: Unit 3 Gender Differences

I think humans are so strange, why can’t they tolerate other’s differences? Why must everyone be the same?

Heterosexuals (异性恋) want to find someone different from themselves. Homosexuals, want to find someone who are the same, they want to find themselves from others. This is the basic difference between heterosexuals and homosexuals. There’re no laws or societies can totally eliminate the homosexual part of the human nature.

白先勇’ s attitude to homosexual:
