Page 9: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn wanted to name the new colony “Sylvania” which

means “woods.” The king wanted William to name it

after his father.

Page 10: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

They compromised and called it “Pennsylvania.”

Page 11: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

In 1681, Penn’s cousin, William Markham, led the

first group of English colonists to Pennsylvania.

Page 12: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

In 1682, Penn wrote Pennsylvania’s first constitution

called the First Frame of Government. It made sure that

everyone had freedom of religion.

Page 13: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn also created the Great Law, which made sure that the people

of Pennsylvania had a voice in their government.

Page 14: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

William Penn came to Pennsylvania for the first time in 1682. He sailed on the ship

Penn divided his colony up into three counties: Bucks, Chester,

and Philadelphia counties.

Page 16: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn also began planning the city of Philadelphia, which

means “City of Brotherly Love.”

Page 17: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

He designed Philadelphia to have straight streets and parks

and public squares.

Page 18: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn treated the Native Americans living in Pennsylvania fairly. He wanted to be friends with them, and they respected

him for that.

Page 19: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn and the Lenape signed the Treaty of Shackamaxon, in which

Penn bought the land given to him by the king.

Page 20: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn called Pennsylvania a “holy experiment” because the colony was based on his Quaker beliefs.

Page 21: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Penn wanted to treat everyone fairly in his new

colony, so he sold land to people at good prices. He

also invited people from

different European

countries to live in Pennsylvania.

Many Germans would come and settle in the colony over the

years. By the 1750s, more than ½ the population of

Pennsylvania spoke German.

Page 24: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146

Unfortunately, disagreements over the borders of Pennsylvania

and Delaware forced Penn to return to England in 1684. He

was in England until 1699.

Page 25: Unit 3 Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Pages 126-132; 145-146
